Tomorrow I start high school.

since school is different over here in Germany i will just compare this to my last three years of school, after everyone who does not want to go to university left(which is a viable option here, or at least used to be).
It was a great time but in between the work load and the extra curricular stuff i did took up a lot of time and i also turned 18 so i spend almost every night at a bar or other, just because i could. The over-achiever in me was happy because for the first time there was stuff to do outside of class but in school that was not related to sports. I got myself elected as class president and organized the shit out of everything that could be organized. After the three years i needed a break, thank god for mandatory military service.

BUT while everything was fun and all the most important thing is to keep your grades up, it may sound lame but i didn't and it was only through dumb luck that i got accepted at the university of my choice.

Take the most challenging courses you can. They're the only classes with teachers worth their merit and will actually make your job easier.

OT: Play to your strengths. I moved a lot, even home schooled for a year, and I was able to drag along with no major incidences. My advice to make high school easier: Keep your grades in the A range, read some during class, and if you're teacher asks a question, reply intelligently. The teacher's will start to love you and you're not even bribing them, just being a good student. Did I mention the perks of being favored by the staff with out brown nosing? You can get away with more than your peers. Of course, that was playing to my strengths.

school stuff is straightforward enough. going into high school i knew i was going to go to junior college, so i just skated by with C's
as far as social stuff goes, if your advancing with your friends, then your set, if your going into school completely alone (i did) then the best advice i can give you is be yourself. making friends is easy. oh, and every single movie depicting high school life is full of bullshit.

The thing I'd tell my 14 year old self is put more food in your locker because you will be hungry during the day since you skip breakfast. Then pretend to go to the bathroom come back to class with Rice Krispy treats because thats how you roll.

I'll just tell you what our guidance counselor told us in our grade 9 year.
"School is only the experience you make it, get out there and do everything you can because it's gone in a flash."

As long as you stay consistent on work and stuff, you should be fine. You'll meet some people you will like, hang out with and people who are really fake/stupid. Also don't be lazy, that will really catch up to you and hit you hard later if you are lazy.

Try being as social as possible. That can really be an advantage towards yourself among people. Try joining some clubs or something.

Also, one last thing. Try to move yourself swiftly in the hallway. I cannot stress this enough since during my years, people would usually stand RIGHT IN THE MIDDLE of incoming traffic, which is really irritating.

Just be very aware of things, OP. You'll do good.

I had a fairly good time in High School. I sucked at the actual academic part, (for lack of effort, not aptitude), but I enjoyed a lot of the social and extracurricular stuff.

If I could talk to my 14 year old self, I'd tell her how awesome 11th and 12th grade would be. 9th and 10th were tough for me, partly because I was trying to figure out who I was and who I wanted to be. Things got way better once I stopped worrying about pleasing people I didn't even like.

My advice? This actually probably won't be "The best time of your life". That's not to say it won't be fun and awesome and all that, but trust me, there's so much more out there than High School. Besides, wouldn't it kind of suck if the best time of your life was over before you were a quarter through your expected life span?

It's fine. A lot more socially easy than Jr. high was (I think that's secondary school for you guys in the UK, though I may be wrong).

Then again, I did go to a very small High School

ppppsssh...i doodled in class (free time only) and took up art, filming, and running my own site.

while high school helped me find what i wanted to do, the other 50% was a waste of time for me.

also, bullies...if you encounter one, you make damn sure he'll think twice next time, (kicking ass, photoshop + facebook of the guy, sabotaging his life, ect.) and shit should go smooth. also dances, pep rallies, sporting events, prom are a waste of time and money. find some bros YOU like and share your interest and are safe and just fuck everyone else and you'll be good.

also, stay on the teachers good sides, it helps to be friends with them.

also pay attention to the teacher at the very least if your not a note taker.

ALSO no matter what people think is cool, you make sure to decide if its stupid or not. but considering its cool to the masses of teenagers....its going to be stupid 99.99999 to 100 percent of the time.

AND ALSO AGAIN rumors are rumors and don't EVER EVER EVER acknowledge one, whether its about you or someone else, avoid drama at all cost.

I got the hang of the grading system my sophomore year, generally speaking, you kind of just have to "attempt" working, or at least make it look like you are, and things will be real easy. Granted, my gpa is shit, I didn't care for high grades, and I made sure all my teachers knew it (D stands for Diploma!).

Highschool was a hell of a lot easier for me socially since I can be quite the introvert while I'm in school. Popularity was pretty much thrown out the window and everybody was just more chilled out, thank god for drugs. Ironically, my school had the highest suicide rate in either my county or state, freshman year it was one of my teachers, sophomore year it was one of my buddies, and about one per year every year afterwards.

The relaxed atmosphere seemed to be more prominent in the more populated schools, I've been to two small highschools for parts of some school years and there was a hell of a lot more drama, or perhaps it was more compact drama... Don't know.

And the best part of course would be the brawls, there will be lots, at least if your school is anything like mine was. They're like MMA for highly uncoordinated individuals. Very short lived but very entertaining.

If I could tell the past me something, it would be to get a good sleep schedule, eat your veggies, buy as many pens as you can afford, there's an infinite amount of possible outcomes to every situation, half of which don't end the way you really hope they won't, and to just chill.


I've never really liked shark week.

Honestly I rather enjoyed high school, If you join clubs your interested in and make a moderate attempt to get too know your teachers you will find out that their are fun things to do and that most teachers are far more interesting then they let on. Also try to suround yourself with smart people as it will push you to do better, its usually not good to be the smartest amoung your friends in high school as they tend to bring you down. This may sound cruel but seriously try it, it works best if you have a smart math friend and a smart art friend, I was the history politics guy and then i had other friends who were realy smart a certain subjects, though I guess for me it worked out that way by sear chanch

OT: don't slack. If college is in your future, for the love of god(or insert deity), don't slack. You have no idea how much hard work can cover your ass for college tuition. Don't underestimate it. As for the workload, I never found it all too heavy, but I suppose it varies depending on your schedule.

As for your social life...be warned; many MANY people are going to be the most backwards, immature, fake persona people you will ever meet. I swept past high school being the quiet guy who always did his work on time and never bothered anyone. But then again, that's my personality. Be smart about the people you hang out with. And don't get too attached to anyone romantically; I can tell you right now that any high school fling you might have has a very VERY low survival rate.

That's all I got for you right now. Good luck, and don't underestimate the flow of time. 4 years go by way too damn fast. Enjoy your last few years before college. As much as I love college, the responsibilities you have can be a bit too much to handle.

High school was really hard for me ... but I guess if you're smart you won't be in International Baccalaureate like I was, so in that case it should be pretty easy.

Just attend all your classes and do all the work and make sure you turn it all in on time. Even if it's not all done perfectly that should keep you above a 3.5.

Oh, and make sure you have friends and go to parties and all that shit. It's hell otherwise. It's hell anyway but it's much less hell if you have some fun.

I took the IB. I didn't get the diploma due to me being terrible at essays, but nonetheless I got an unconditional acceptance into university Now I start university in 19 days, hopefully it will be easy. I'm inclined to believe so because I was the only one to know what Pyongyang was when a professor asked what the capital of North Korea was -.-

OT: I can't quite remember my first days at high school. What I remember is my first two years were more or less terrible, but my last two years were great. Just hang with a crowd that you identify with and things should be fine. Just don't be too hard on yourself and party. Seriously, that was what I did wrong during my first two years. It didn't really affect my grades either way due to me being a bad student anyways.
