No no no no ... you've got the wrong way of thinking. The whole point of learning a new language isn't to enculture yourself or those around you, it is a means to ***** about people behind their back in front of their face. And in turn know when you're getting slagged off.

I had to do French at school but was in complete and utter joy when working in Wales and a French couple came in giving us the business. Letting them know I could understand them after they made lewd reference to a number of our mothers was definately a point for the "I'm English therefore I don't know any other languages" stereotype.

Currently living in Japan and studying Japanese, but have a lot of fun when I'm with friends who know no Japanese at all. ^_^

Though if there MUST be a universal language it should be one that is least spoken in the world, to get the lazy off they butts, like what they speak in Papua New Guinea

Honestly, I think there should be a universal trade language. Not to completely eradicate all languages but 1, but rather a second language that EVERYBODY knows.

I'd endorse Esperanto as the universal second language, but to be honest I don't know enough about it. But whatever it is, it should have RULES THAT WORK 100% OF THE TIME. None of this "I before E, except if it's one of the many MANY examples where it isn't" crap.

Life would be so much easier. All movies and games would have native language mode and universal secondary language subtitles so none of this "waiting 2 years for it to be translated" and heck, since everyone speaks it anyway we wouldn't even need translators. Not to mention the benefits to travel, business and politics.
except the esperanto part,I 100% agree with you
Though Esperantu might be cool

Go multi-lingual. It can get you laid anywhere on the earth. Yeah, the culture and stuff is fun too.

I think you all missed out why this is so pointless. Have you noticed how one country has a different accent to another or even between states in a single country? This is the beginning of new languages, now how is it expected that every single person in the whole world speaks the exact same language without variation turning it into multiple languages?

No. That is a horrible Idea, language is a part of culture, and forcing a new one down everyones throat is killing the culture to an extent. Also, forcing other to think like you is fascism...Just so those who think that all others should learn English know that.

Well, there is just no way to convince the world to change their culture in anyway, learn a new language, abandon theirs and still be happy about it. The only way I see this happening is if one nation conquers the world and they announce their language to be used worldwide. ...Still probably wouldnt work tho.
If any language had to be chosen tho, i'd prefer english or Japanese.

I think one language would be crap but I also don't think it's very necessary to have hundreds of them either, 5-7 dominating languages would be just about right. I also don't think it's right to blame the world for having so many languages just because you yourself only managed to learn one, but then again, maybe you don't need more. I admit that Language is a big cultural thing, but as a person who knows Lithuanian and English on a high level, Russian on a medium and Japanese on a below medium, I can easily say that my main language can go get hit face first on a highway truck. A lot of languages are overly difficult and complex, and just as with anything that's overly difficult and complex, you can take out half the parts and it will still somehow operate. I love the English language and it's only because of it's simplicity, and same goes with Russian(as soon as you get past the alphabet). A lot of languages simply have so much needless crap piled onto them to make the language more "unique", that it is forgotten that the main point of a language is communication and not writing complex novels for literature geeks...

English isn't simplistic ... far from it ...
... and i am english, and i still think its mucked up ... the rules of gramma change depending on the weather and if you listed all the languages ours is made up of you'd be here forever ...

two big things to kepp in mind is do you reakky want everyone in the world to know what everyone is saying and also it would cost billions and take centuires to convert evertythinh ever written spoken made etc. into the new language

NO! switching to one single language is like switching to one single culture; it would make the world incredibly boring, with nothing new to explore. also, a lot of words can only be said using one language, as there are no equivalent words in other languages

Most languages can be grouped according to their origins and how inherently similar they are. Learning a second or third language really isn't as daunting a task as you might think.

English should be the only spoken language in the world. To say that giving up your mother tongue is losing your culture is racism. There's one party (political party not a party party) in Sweden that blames Sweden's problems on mixed culture.

No. One of the fun things, in my opinion, about meeting a foreign person is both of us trying to understand each other's language. Shows that we aren't ignorant and that we respect each other, even if we won't manage to grasp the language in the end. Different languages don't separate us, they individualize us and make us fun.

i think getting a unified language would help humanity move towards a new beginning for ascension and world peace. but then, that's not what everyone wants. i mean, let's all have war over petty differences instead of working together for a greater whole, it's so much more fun! i guess entertaining our own generation matters more than making the world a better place for future generations.
