Too much gameplay for the game?

I'm finally playing Bioshock (Yes I know it's old, but that's not the point) and while the atmosphere is amazing like everyone says, I find that I can't enjoy it. Instead of sitting back and admiring the beauty of it like I would in a book or movie, I'm more focused on keeping an eye on my ammo and watching out for turrets. I'm not sure if this is just me, but in video games, being an interactive media, especially FPSs, I'm more worried about the gameplay itself than the story or ambience.

Is this just me, or do other people sometimes get this feeling?

I'm the same way. While I admire the atmosphere of the game, I do when I'm forced to, or when I'm looking for the nearest vending machine-thing.

I've always felt that Bioshock is a traditional RPG crammed into a FPSRPGWTFBBQ. Like, the tone the interface sets up is jarringly different from the one the game's atmosphere projects.

I want to enjoy, and I don't dislike it, but I feel I'm too distracted to really appreciate it.

I kind of act the same way, but only really when I'm doing my first run through of a new game, or on the hardest difficulty. Besides that, I usually replay games a lot and I love to see the artwork, atmosphere, mechanics, environments and characters. Once you get better at and beat Bioshock, try going back through it again and looking at all of those, because that game is awesome.

I felt the same way about BioShock. Sometimes I wish I could have taken a tour throughout the city with a Little Sister by my side, without worrying about being ambushed by Splicers. Rapture was one of the best settings that a video-game has ever had, in my honest opinion, and it was a shame to not have been able to fully explore it.

I bought Bioshock and Metro 2033 the other day.

Didn't really like Bioshock.

Metro, on the other hand..
