I feel burned by Half-Life 2...I bough the game and Episode one on the implied promise of Episode 2&3. Instead they opted to screw their fans for no good reason and just deliberately halt production on the franchise since they no longer liked the episodic model.

I'm not sure why fans just give the company a pass on this.

Imagine getting so invested in Telletale's The Walking Dead Season one and getting to the end of Episode 4 just to find out that they've decided to halt production on that game and move on to Game of Thrones instead...not for legal reasons, not for financial reasons...simply because they felt GoT better fit the storytelling format.

Why bother? It doesn't matter what I think. If HL3 ever becomes a reality it will easily become the best selling PC game of all time regardless of product quality. That's just common sense given the games legacy and the immense undying support for everything Valve does.

If the announcement is game related I hope its for L4D3. I've never played the franchise but I just don't want to be surrounded by renewed HL3 hype overwhelming these forums for months on end. It'll be like Skyrim all over again but MUCH worse.

The wierd thing is, if/when Valve announces Portal3/DOTA3/TF3/LFD3, the first thing internet is going to hear is "So, where's Half Life 3? You know, Half Life, the series that you started WAAAAAAAAAAAAYYYYYYYYYYYY before L4D/TF/Portal?"

They're kind of in a bind. New IP's will prompt "Why are you starting new things when you haven't finished the one thing everyone wants to see?" and adding a third game to anything else will prompt "Okay, Valve can count to 3. So what's your excuse now for no EP3/HL3?"

Which may be the reason they don't release games anymore, just sell them. HL3 is just gonna hang over everything they do from now until eternity. Kind of like SE and the FF7 remake(except FF7 actually exists).

What odd timing. I just reinstalled HL2 a few hours ago, will be the first time I've played since 09. I see that steam has added achievements since then, this will be fun!
F**k that god damned f***ing Gnome!

I hate the damn thing, kept dispearing and getting blown out reach by Zombines.

Lol. I hung onto that gnome for a long time without even knowing there was an achievement. But trying to get it to stay in the car was just not worth it.

In my case, it's not a matter of fanboyism, I assure you. It's just that the "burn" you're describing is first-degree. A sunburn, if you will. It'll probably eventually become a cancer, but you've got a few years. I've been burned far worse by EA (almost ashes with this one). So, while Valve isn't perfect (and still needs to finish their damned Half-Life storyline), I just don't see them as bad on that level. Although, it's entirely possible that they're getting there.

I'll agree with you there.

While I don't have any direct personal squabbles with EA from experience (not saying I agree with their practices mind you)...I get your point completely. As far as gaming 'evils' are concerned...not giving your fans more of a game they loved is pretty low on the list.

If they announce a new game on 3/3/15 at 3 PM (as I read) it'll probably be Left4Dead 3 on their new engine. Weren't some images of this leaked a while back? Unless those were fake or I'm misremembering.

Dont care about HL3 or L4D3. Both their previous games were generic shooters. Now if they showed Portal 3, i would be all for that.

I have to agree wholeheartedly with this comment. Half Life 2 was great in its day, but they clearly did not care about the story. It ended on a cliffhanger that they left hanging. The story in each game of Portal had a clear beginning and an end, and they were wonderfully intelligent and entertaining.

More than likely any announcement will be about L4D3, their Steam VR stuff, or the controller that still makes me scratch my head wondering who the hell wants that.

I would laugh if Valve was waiting this entire time knowing that people were giving up on it because of the "hype" problem. Aren't most people over HL3 though? So I guess it coming out and actually being good would be hilarious.

Valve hasn't failed me yet so I'm going to go ahead and say its possible, but still could be unlikely.

I'm still pretty convinced HL3 will release, someday. I really wish Valve would do it like Beyonce did her last album and just have it appear on Steam one day with no promotion or announcement beforehand. Just let the Internet break from the discovery.

I really don't feel it's "too soon" for either game, though. The possibility of either one is about the same, and we have about the same amount of information to go on to believe either is in development.

Is it bad that I want HL3 to come out partly JUST to get people to shut up about it already? I mean, how many games are there that deserve a sequel and never got one?

Not really. If HL3 came out tomorrow and turned out to be totally shitty, full of crappy freemium DLC and was essentially AC:UNITY all over again, yes a lot of people would be angry. It would also break the tension/anticipation that remains in the air around HL3 and people would finally let it go and move onto wishing for The Last Guardian.

You know it would be pretty insane if Valve drops all of it's stuff at the same time, we are talking the already known:
- Source 2
- streaming machines
- controllers
- consoles
- VR headset
- VR body trackers
And then to make it all come together... HL3 that works with everything. I imagine Valve would just get a monopoly on gaming for a good two-three months if they pull that off, the game being good or bad wouldn't even matter.

You do know that Valve don't make games any more, oh they occasionally release a game after acquiring a mod made by some independents and then after hiring them release it as one of their games but games based on original IPs or IPs that Valve created.... nope.

The thing is even now why would Valve dirty it self with actually developing games, games cost money and resource and time to make and their is always the risk it will suck arse at the end of it all and no one will buy it, where as Steam is a license to print cash, better yet why not use Steam to allow talentless no bodies to make games and then CHARGE THEM to use Steam to sell their games, fuck if we create a game engine and then let the talentless no bodies use that for FREE and make sure you ain't paying anyone to you know quality control the shit you're selling or have any customer service for people to demand refunds for the shit they just purchased from your service well fuck that's just about a license to print a machine that prints licenses to print cash, in fact you now have the ability to make so much cash you have to spend a huge amount of time and cash developing stupid controllers, idiotic VR headsets, your own OS and a whole range of gaming PCs that aren't PCs but are consoles except that they aren't consoles, in fact I bet if you sat someone from Valve down and asked them what they are even they would have to shrug their shoulders and go ppfffttt I dunno!

I know EA and Ubisoft get a load of shit but end of the day they are game publishers who still publish games. Valve started out making games, then started DD services and making games and now I don't think even the people at Valve have a fucking clue what it is Valve do.

Half life 3 is still a thing? Really at this point it feels like big foot or UFO sightings. Commonly talked about. Not actually real.

Seriously, as far as I'm concerned, HL3 is a myth. Just like the Last Guardian. Maybe one day I'll be proven wrong. I'll be ok with that. Until I get something solid though...
