I and most American nerds of a certain age grew up watching the Toonami block on cartoon network. It wasn't quite my first exposure to anime -- that would be a combination of Voltron reruns and the episodes of Sailor Moon and Dragon Ball Z that ran on the WB in the early 90's -- but it was my first exposure to anime that had been dubbed by people who cared, and edited as lightly as a Y7 rating would allow. Unfortunately, executive meddling took its toll, and by the time Cartoon Network pulled the plug in 2008, it had gone so far south that I barely even noticed. Actually, it had gone so far south at that point that I was surprised to find an article saying it lasted to 2008; I remembered it as dying some time in 2006.

Most people remember it for Dragon Ball Z and Gundam Wing, but what I really miss about it, and what modern anime blocks like Adult Swim and SyFy's Animonday block are missing, is the older series that came out before anime became a big international export. When I think about the series that I have truly enjoyed, most of them came out somewhere between the late 70's and the early 90's.

This wave of nostalgia isn't completely random, actually. I recently came across a Ustream channel that recreates toonami, using the original bumpers, all uncut anime, and also throwing in the occasional cartoon cartoon or Kids WB cartoon. I'd give a link, but I have a feeling it would go against the TOS; to the mods, is a link to a copyright infringing piece of streaming video okay, or is it only against the rules if downloads are possible? Quite a few of the series they run on that Ustream channel are out of print, and they encourage people to buy boxed sets where possible.

Anyway, I spent two hours watching episodes of Lupin III and Ranma 1/2 yesterday, and not only do they not dub them that well anymore, but Japan doesn't produce stuff like that anymore. It's kind of a shame, really. For discussion value: I don't know, reminisce about coming home from school and watching anime or something. There's gotta be some old fans of Toonami on this site, I'm sure you all have stories.

I remember coming home from school, eating some Burger King, and watching DBZ all the time..............then staying up to watch Yu Yu Hakusho and Space Ghost.

I may have been dead tired the next day and I wouldn't remember everything that I had watched, but, it was glorious. :D

Ah, yes, Toonami. I remember me and a friend of mine getting home from school and watching DBZ and Gundam and playing N64 all afternoon until dinner/homework time. I even get a little teary-eyed thinking about that little robot fellow who hosted Toonami, Tom. Good times, good times...

I was always excited to come home after school and get my daily dose of Mobile Fighter G Gundam, DBZ and Rurouni Kenshin. Those were the good days.

And OP they still dub anime that well. Check out a show called Baccano.

I used to watch it all the time, setting aside time to watch it. I remember their reviews, their short series with Tom, and the little extra stuff they threw in that made even the commercials be fun.

It slowly started to turn away from that sort of "hosted time slot" that used to be so popular, though it still kept a sort of interactive nature with its background information on the site. Then it slowly began to die as it gave out less quality shows (and while I'll say there are still great animes produced in Japan, either they're way too mature for that time slot, or they just don't get the right treatment over here).

However, I'd say this is a general problem with animation in general. Not only are the shows of lesser quality, but a lot of them seem to be more kid oriented (read: childish) rather than family (read: those above the target age enjoy it as much as the target audience). Yes, some of that is nostalgia, but some of it I was able to see by actually checking out what I used to watch.

I liked Tom a lot more than the group of bots the thing died with.

Toonami was my first exposure to anime (barring maybe Speed Racer, which I didn't care for). Nothing like randomly flipping channels when you're home sick one day, and stumbling onto a scene where a major villain gets killed for disobeying orders. And then that villain's death scene sets up the motivation for their lover the rest of the season. Then there's a tense escape scene with the main protagonists, who I immediately took a liking to.

Yeah, I was pretty much addicted to Sailor Moon after that day. I still like the show (as much as I watched; by the time they finally dubbed the SuperS season, I'd mostly stopped watching TV).

Naturally, I'd later go through the same things with Tenchi Muyo, Outlaw Star, Yu Yu Hakusho, and Rurouni Kenshin (with dashes of Dragonball Z and Robotech to taste).

I absolutely loved Toonami when I was a kid. What was more surprising about though, was that they gave 'Tom' a story of his own and it pretty interesting considering it was probably an afterthought. I wish there was something that today.

Tom was pretty cool.

Hell, I still have VHS recordings of shows when Moltar was still the host.

I'd watch it all the time, but my favorite show was a pack of awesomeness known as Megas XLR. If you've ever watched the show, you know what I mean. I still miss Toonami to this day. That robot guy who "hosted" it was pretty cool too.

I never watched Toonami (couldn't receive it), but these are the daytime anime's that I grew up with.

They're Dutch, but you get the idea.

Now these were cartoons.

Toonami? You my friend just sent a wave of nostalgia crashing over me! If it wasn't for Toonami, I don't know where I would be as an anime fan. Probably nowhere. It was responsible for my "discovery" (for lack of a better word) of the animes on Adult Swim (because they were on the same channel), and that led to me accepting that cartoons weren't just for kids, as 4kids would have me believe.

Toonami is something I remember fondly from a more innocent age of my life. :3
