Yes, I'm sure this thread has been done a million times, but it hasn't been done since I joined. If you want to flame me for being unoriginal, please feel free to go and sit in a dark room and cry about how pathetic you are until you collapse in a shivering heap and die of malnutrition and your body is found by the lady who lives upstairs from you in three weeks because her cat smelled the stench of death and got freaked out. I'm interested in knowing the escapists' all-time favourite games (and telling them mine). Here goes.
By the lady who lives up stairs... you mean our moms right?

OT: Favorite game is Assassin's creed 1, cause that's the one I'm playing right now. Maybe it'll be different tomorrow.

Why isn't anyone explaining what made these games good, from their perspective? That's the first thing that occurred to me, but I'm just weird like that. Maybe.

#10

The Elder Scrolls: Oblivion

OK, this one isn't exactly true. To be honest, I feel Oblivion was a good game with lots of wasted potential. What I like about it, however, is that it's a game you can do nearly anything with.

By which I mean the mod maker. From things as simple as adding cloaks, to creating entirely new games from the ground up, there's...not a whole lot you can't do. I've got mods that make my character into a werewolf, add hundreds of weapons. change the way the map looks, and add entirely new worlds, and that's just for starters. The possibilities are practically endless, as long as you care to look.

Oh, and I am psyched for Skyrim. Looks awesome.

#9

Gemcraft Labrynth

So I like a flash game. Why don't you like flash games? Does something have to be big and expensive for you to like?

Gemcraft is challenging, intruiging, and one of those games where you have to have enough power to throw the rules of the game completely out, or enough enginuity to fuck them up. Sometimes even that's not enough.

I admit it can be slow at times, but I still really like it, and it's still one of my favorite games.
#8

Metroid Prime

I'm going to be honest; I don't really like First-Person shooters. I couldn't tell you why if I wanted to, but it may say something that this (and Stranger's Wrath) are the only FPS's I do like, but I'll leave that to you.

What I love about this game is that there's a distinct...feel of playing it. While it seems to draw from just about everything, it has it's own flavor, it's own style. It is (not unlike Oddworld) in it's own little world. You do feel a sense of growth while you're playing it; visiting new regions, seeing new things, battling new enemies, scanning new plants (this plant is just like the one next to it, exept it's orange! Oh, whoops, it got eaten. Too bad). The whole time you're doing this, however, there's this sense of grandeur, that the world is much, much larger than just you and your adventures, that you are just another wheel in the great machine. It's beautiful.

#7

Final Fantasy X

This is actually the only Final Fantasy I've played all the way through, and I really liked it. Every character is unique and complex, every place is extraordinary and surreal and the story works on several different levels. And while I'm not exactly a fan of turn-based combat (if it can be helped), I don't feel they did a bad job.

So, hits the ball in every area, I feel. Good for it.

#6

Advance Guardian Heroes

I never played Guardian Heroes for the Dreamcast; in fact, I don't think I've ever seen a dreamcast in person. But I've played this, and it is awesome.

Think Super Smash Brothers meets Dragonball Z. It's kinda like that. The story mode is kinda medeoker, but the gameplay blows everything right out of the park. This is the sort of game where you can pick up one guy, throw him into four or five others, then throw a haymaker so powerful it sends you flying across the screen, hitting and killing all five of the guys. Yeah, it's fun.

#5

Super Smash Brothers Melee

Speaking of Super Smash Brothers...

I haven't played Brawl yet (Wii is yet another console I have yet to see in person) but I've had Melee since I've had a gamecube, and I still play it. A lot.

To me, this is the ultimate fighting game, because it's not really a game about fighting. It's carefree, it's whimsical, it's easy to play well but difficult to play really well. And it's awesome.

#4

Devil May Cry 3: Dante's Awakening

What's more fun than knocking something into the air and then shooting it until there's nothing left to shot? Knocking it into the air then shooting it with a shit ton of lazers that's what.

I'm not even sure what I like about this game, other than the pure, violent fun (which is awesome). Yes, I feel there is a distinct moral point made, and while I don't feel it was shoehorned in, I do feel it to be just the tiniest bit unnecessary.

Plus, there was a pirate costume. Or, I thought it was a pirate costume. I even made up a song about "Dante, the Pirate Dante" kicking people's ass.

I found four to be disappointing in comparison; Nero's gameplay was extraordinarily well done(although I didn't quite get the hang of it), but Dante's was mediocre in comparison. And no, I don't think the new one is going to suck. I haven't seen it yet.

#3

Oddworld: Abe's Oddysee

Is that how it's spelled? I think that's how it's spelled.

This game was unlike any platformer I'd ever played, and any I've played since. Sure there are whimsical platformers and serious ones, but I'd never seen the two ideas intertwined so easily. On one hand, it was amusing seeing the mudukons die in all variety of ways; on the other hand, you eventually got to feel why it is they need saving; they're almost completely helpless. And if you did kill all of them, the game made you pay for it.

This is proof that something can be whimsical and satiric and still have a goddamn point. And I love it for that.

#2

Legend of Zelda; Ocarina of Time

The first game I actually played for the N64 was Super Mario 64, but I feel the inclusion and consistency of the story makes this leaps and bounds better.

What do I mean? Well, when Gannondorf fucks things up, he fucks things up. That's what sold me. It wasn't everything was a little worse off, everything literally went to hell. I believed that I'd really, really fucked up.

The gameplay was excellent as well, although it suffered from a typical problem I encounter with Zelda games (keep moving forward-forward may be backwards or forwards or three stories up, but it's always forwards). I'd like to play the master edition, but I don't know where to find it.

And finally...#1

Super Mario World

Favorite game ever. Of all time. There is literally nothing wrong with this game. The colors are perfect, the design is perfect, the map is perfect, the controls are perfect, everything about this just screams fun. This was my favorite game as a child and it's still my favorite game today.

So...that's it. Hope you liked it.

These are pretty fun threads. Besides, new games coupled with our slowly dying memories mean we're always going to change our replies even if it's only slightly. So as of now, here are mine.

Mass Effect:
It's a brilliantly written cop-drama in space only the entire Galaxy is at stake! Also you can bang Liara who is the hottest character in the series (a close second being Tali closely followed by a scar-covered Garrus). I like the first better though because you can explore planets in the Mako, there's weapon customization, there's unlimited ammo with no stupid heat-clip garbage, no stupid mineral/resource mining and, using grenades isn't a skill that Shepard needs to earn.
Star Fox 64:
Two words: Star Wolf. Those levels where you're in an enclosed space fighting your anti-group are BAD-FUCKING-ASS. 64 improves upon the original Star Fox in every way (although I am fond of the original Star Fox logo). I also love how the levels you go to depend on how you do in the previous levels. Scaling Difficulty I think it's called. Hell I dunno.
Legend of Zelda: Link to the Past:
This game is basically the SNES version of Ocarina of Time. Grab 3 magic things, go to alternate dimension to grab 7 more then, kill Ganon, all while gathering items, bottles and, new tunics. I like the top-down sprites a bit more than the paper-craft/ polygon look more though so LttP won out for me.
Saint's Row 2:
It's colorful, there's no annoying date mechanic and, it's fucking funny. The Brotherhood missions play out like a series of over-the-top pranks. I also love how there are actual boss battles (for the Ronin at least)
Bust-a-Move:
It's a casual puzzle game from back when those weren't evil. I liked it more than Tetris because it seemed to move faster. It also involved dinosaurs...or...dragons...whatever the hell those bastards are. It was a fun arcade game.
Guitar Hero 2:
My favorite Guitar Hero. It was playable on expert unlike the third and had a really strong line-up on disc unlike 4-6 and the spin-offs. I'm kinda sad that the genre is somewhat dead at the moment though.
Fallout 3:
An FPS that is also an RPG?! FUCK YEAH! This was also my first Fallout. Even after New Vegas I came back to the Capital Wasteland. Love this game.
Portal:
It was a great and, unique game. Loved the humor in it too but somehow it was worn down and, worn out faster and more effectively than Holy Grail.
Halo: Reach:
I love the Halo franchise but this one allowed you to be your own Spartan. Also, no Flood. That's my favorite aspect of Reach. The vehicle-heavy gameplay is a close second.
Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles IV: Turtles in Time:
They just don't make beat-em-ups like this anymore. This is my hands-down, all-time favorite game of all time. Hell, all of Konami's early 90's beat-em-ups were pretty good (and basically all the same game with different IP's like, The Simpson's and, The X-Men)

There really isn't a particular order to these but TMNT is firmly number one. Honorable mentions include Metal Gear Solid, Super Castlevania IV, Final Fantasy IV and, VI-IX, Psychonaughts, The Suffering, Thousand Year Door, Majora's Mask, Pokemon (traditional color/metal/stone games), Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion and, Super Smash Brothers melee off of the top of my head.

No order at all just as they came to mind. I think I have to state something. Deus Ex: Human Revolution is on the list, I have not beat it yet unlike all the other games on this list, but I still like it alot. And this list might change with the release of Elder Scrolls V, as did the release of Deus Ex changed my list :p lol

Final Fantasy X- This game was the first PS2 game I had, I remember playing through this game for the first time, and the ending made me cry

Final Fantasy XIII- I am going to get hate for this, but what can I say. I really like this game alot.

Witcher 2 Assassins of Kings- I liked it more then the first one. This is probably the best game I have ever played. Ever

Metal Gear Solid 4- Games don't get much better then this. Combining elements of stealth and dramatic story telling. This game is a must play

Metal Gear Solid Twin Snakes-

Persona 3 Portable- So unique. A sim dating date, combine with a dungeon crawler RPG. I just loved this game

Shadow of the Colossus- Who said games cant be art?

Metroid Prime Trilogy- I can count all three because they are still on one disc of greatness

Deus Ex: Human Revolution- This game is brilliant. I don't normally like first person shooters, but Deus Ex just did everything right. The only flaw is that it ends. One of the few games I could play forever

Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion: Live an other live in an other world. That is Elder Scrolls

10. Pokemon Red and Blue

This was my first action adventure rpg. The game masterfully used turn based combat to a medium that was mainly associated with portable Mario and Kirby games. This game usurped the Nintendo portable scene in spectacular fashion. What is unfortunate about these games is that people will always associate it with the tie in anime and decide if it is a good thing or not rather than playing it. I may love this game but I can't wholeheartedly recommend it because the outdated graphics will piss people who have never played the originals or is younger than 18 years old.

9. The Legend of Zelda: The Ocarina of Time

Yes this game is a total cliche on top ten lists I know. But it deserves to be. The graphics during its time were revolutionary. You would have serious difficulty finding a gamer who is not familiar with this game. The gameplay is fantastic and innovative for its time. The levels/dungeons are imaginative and have great atmosphere. The musical score is memorable the story was it's only problem. The story was just rehashes of previous Zelda titles which I guess is the problem with most Zelda games. Plus this game pales in comparison to previous titles. I recommend playing the none 3d version if you can.

8. Sonic Adventure 2 Battle

Surprised to see a 3d Sonic game? And yes most 3d Sonic games deserve their infamy. The controls at times kind of suck and the bonus missions can get tedious. That being said, this game was easily some of the most fun I have had in a video game. The story is surprisingly compelling, albeit predictable. The characters with exception of Amy are entertaining. Playing as a runner, treasure hunter, and robot controller is a hell of a lot of fun. It combine platforming and puzzles beautifully. The raising a chao minigame is actually fun and it was awesome making them fight and race against friends. I highly recommend it if you can find it.

7. Limbo

Limbo is one of those games that people love or hate. I adore this game. Its about a little boy who goes looking for his sister and he essentially loses his innocence in a bleak dark world. The game is puzzle platform that is trail and error based gameplay. They atmosphere in this game is so eerie and creepy you begin to form a connection with the boy and you wish to see him survive. I reccomend it to those that love something new and original rather than just playing Black Ops.

6. Tales of Symphonia

This is the only JRPG that you will ever see me play. The gameplay is okay and the graphics could be better. What really sets this game apart for me is the depth of the story. The 9 main characters all have arcs and clear motivations that make them shine above the same space marines that must fight the Zerg or whatever alien race, warlocks, nazis etc. The characters all have great chemistry and the voice acting is above average for these types if games. The story kept me interested till the very end and it payed off beautifully. Then the game rewards you with perks to make the next playthrough easier or harder. I haven't played the sequel because I do not want to color my opinion of this game. If you like story, play this game.

5. Halo 3 and Halo Trilogy

Yes I really like Halo 3, sue me. Despite the continuation of the Halo franchise, I consider this game it true conclusion. I really enjoyed the Halo story despite the fact combat had gotten rather stale. The ending of this game left me with this great satisfied feeling you would get from finishing a great book or movie. The multiplayer is what kept me playing this game and that the Halo Trilogy is will always be fondly remembered. It was a gaming phenomenon whether you like it or not.

4. The Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past

Having first played this after playing Ocarina of Time I came to an important revelation: this game is so much better! This game set the tone of all Zelda games. It is near perfect. It has great story, gameplay, humor, characterization, and just a great experience in general. I recommend this to everyone.

3. Alan Wake

This game was bit of a sleeper hit. It did not make much money but the game is critically acclaimed and loved by its cult audience. The gameplay is a third person shooter that does not involve cover-based shooting which is a welcome change. It instead has a flashlight to weaken the opponent to then be gunned down by Alan. The story is very intriguing in a way that people are fans of TV shows like Lost and Twin Peaks are going to love. Alan makes a great flawed main character who does a great job eliciting sympathy from the player. The developers did a great job designing the environment to stumble around in. The story is well told and keeps you guessing. Go play this game.

2. Pikmin 2

There is only one thing about this game that bothers me is I cannot classify the damn thing into a genre. It has elements of an action-adventure game, an rts, and a puzzle game. Maybe is ambiguity is what gives Pikmin 2 is strength. After they got rid of the stupid 30 day mechanic and dull story from the first one, the pikmin world is open to the player. And what a wonderfully quirky world it is. The story is fun and imaginative. The gameplay is fantastic. This games has tons and tons of replay value which most games don't have anymore. The levels are just flat out strange and otherworldly. The monsters are all unique and entertaining and challenging. This game is a gem, don't miss out!

1. Super Smash Bros Melee
My all time favorite game. It does what it intends to do and it achieves this with flying colors. It a fighting game, simple as that. Each character is fun to play as. There are tons of fun unlockable content. It is fast paced and fun. It is ten year old and it has aged very well and stands strong as my favorite game of all time.

In no particular order:

I-War (Independence War in the US)
Independence War 2
TIE Fighter
UFO: Enemy Unknown (The first XCOM game)
Mechwarrior 2
Mechwarrior 3
Wing Commander
Frontier: Elite 2
Elder Scrolls: Oblivion
Mass Effect (the first one)

Why does nobody write decent scifi sims any more, damnit!
Hmm, never gave it much thought before, but only a couple of my favourites are even from this century. What's up with game developers these days?

1. Mirror's Edge (Perfection, minus the freaking Boat level.)
2. The Movies (Could have been perfect had there been more options in the movie-maker, more people, and quicker friendships.)
3. Riven: The Sequel to Myst (Best adventure game ever.)
4. Tropico 3 (I suck at it, but so what?)
5. Civilization V (I don't care if it was "dumbed down", it's still better than Civ IV.)
6. Titan Quest (You fight cyclops, mummies, zombies, fluffy birdmen and yeti with a completely straight face. How is this not awesome?)
7. Just Cause 2 (Sandboxes done perfect.)
8. Street Fighter IV (I took HOURS to learn those moves, and I feel like it paid off, so clearly, this is a good game.)
9. Civilization IV (Just because Civ V is better doesn't mean that Civ IV isn't fantastic.)
10. Yume Nikki (I can't wait for some "GAMES ARE NOT ART" fanatic to get frothed into a rage over this one.)

Runner Up: Minecraft (Could have been very high if I actually had an in-game goal.)
