Why isn't anyone explaining what made these games good, from their perspective? That's the first thing that occurred to me, but I'm just weird like that. Maybe.

The Elder Scrolls: Oblivion
OK, this one isn't exactly true. To be honest, I feel Oblivion was a good game with lots of wasted potential. What I like about it, however, is that it's a game you can do nearly anything with.
By which I mean the mod maker. From things as simple as adding cloaks, to creating entirely new games from the ground up, there's...not a whole lot you can't do. I've got mods that make my character into a werewolf, add hundreds of weapons. change the way the map looks, and add entirely new worlds, and that's just for starters. The possibilities are practically endless, as long as you care to look.
Oh, and I am psyched for Skyrim. Looks awesome.

Gemcraft Labrynth
So I like a flash game. Why don't you like flash games? Does something have to be big and expensive for you to like?
Gemcraft is challenging, intruiging, and one of those games where you have to have enough power to throw the rules of the game completely out, or enough enginuity to fuck them up. Sometimes even that's not enough.
I admit it can be slow at times, but I still really like it, and it's still one of my favorite games.

Metroid Prime
I'm going to be honest; I don't really like First-Person shooters. I couldn't tell you why if I wanted to, but it may say something that this (and Stranger's Wrath) are the only FPS's I do like, but I'll leave that to you.
What I love about this game is that there's a distinct...feel of playing it. While it seems to draw from just about everything, it has it's own flavor, it's own style. It is (not unlike Oddworld) in it's own little world. You do feel a sense of growth while you're playing it; visiting new regions, seeing new things, battling new enemies, scanning new plants (this plant is just like the one next to it, exept it's orange! Oh, whoops, it got eaten. Too bad). The whole time you're doing this, however, there's this sense of grandeur, that the world is much, much larger than just you and your adventures, that you are just another wheel in the great machine. It's beautiful.

Final Fantasy X
This is actually the only Final Fantasy I've played all the way through, and I really liked it. Every character is unique and complex, every place is extraordinary and surreal and the story works on several different levels. And while I'm not exactly a fan of turn-based combat (if it can be helped), I don't feel they did a bad job.
So, hits the ball in every area, I feel. Good for it.

Advance Guardian Heroes
I never played Guardian Heroes for the Dreamcast; in fact, I don't think I've ever seen a dreamcast in person. But I've played this, and it is awesome.
Think Super Smash Brothers meets Dragonball Z. It's kinda like that. The story mode is kinda medeoker, but the gameplay blows everything right out of the park. This is the sort of game where you can pick up one guy, throw him into four or five others, then throw a haymaker so powerful it sends you flying across the screen, hitting and killing all five of the guys. Yeah, it's fun.

Super Smash Brothers Melee
Speaking of Super Smash Brothers...
I haven't played Brawl yet (Wii is yet another console I have yet to see in person) but I've had Melee since I've had a gamecube, and I still play it. A lot.
To me, this is the ultimate fighting game, because it's not really a game about fighting. It's carefree, it's whimsical, it's easy to play well but difficult to play really well. And it's awesome.

Devil May Cry 3: Dante's Awakening
What's more fun than knocking something into the air and then shooting it until there's nothing left to shot? Knocking it into the air then shooting it with a shit ton of lazers that's what.
I'm not even sure what I like about this game, other than the pure, violent fun (which is awesome). Yes, I feel there is a distinct moral point made, and while I don't feel it was shoehorned in, I do feel it to be just the tiniest bit unnecessary.
Plus, there was a pirate costume. Or, I thought it was a pirate costume. I even made up a song about "Dante, the Pirate Dante" kicking people's ass.
I found four to be disappointing in comparison; Nero's gameplay was extraordinarily well done(although I didn't quite get the hang of it), but Dante's was mediocre in comparison. And no, I don't think the new one is going to suck. I haven't seen it yet.
#3
Oddworld: Abe's Oddysee
Is that how it's spelled? I think that's how it's spelled.
This game was unlike any platformer I'd ever played, and any I've played since. Sure there are whimsical platformers and serious ones, but I'd never seen the two ideas intertwined so easily. On one hand, it was amusing seeing the mudukons die in all variety of ways; on the other hand, you eventually got to feel why it is they need saving; they're almost completely helpless. And if you did kill all of them, the game made you pay for it.
This is proof that something can be whimsical and satiric and still have a goddamn point. And I love it for that.
#2
Legend of Zelda; Ocarina of Time
The first game I actually played for the N64 was Super Mario 64, but I feel the inclusion and consistency of the story makes this leaps and bounds better.
What do I mean? Well, when Gannondorf fucks things up, he fucks things up. That's what sold me. It wasn't everything was a little worse off, everything literally went to hell. I believed that I'd really, really fucked up.
The gameplay was excellent as well, although it suffered from a typical problem I encounter with Zelda games (keep moving forward-forward may be backwards or forwards or three stories up, but it's always forwards). I'd like to play the master edition, but I don't know where to find it.
And finally...#1
Super Mario World
Favorite game ever. Of all time. There is literally nothing wrong with this game. The colors are perfect, the design is perfect, the map is perfect, the controls are perfect, everything about this just screams fun. This was my favorite game as a child and it's still my favorite game today.
So...that's it. Hope you liked it.
