I'll tell ya why. Because the old gaurd is gone. Demille, Hitchcock, Lang, Kubrick etc. And just like after the demise of Julius Cesear, the absence have brought in these new breed. This new Hollywood. Oh sure, you have a few who respect the old ways: Speilburg, Tarintino, Eastwood but the Hollywood of old is gone.

Rest well old friend. Rest well

Unfortunately, all too true :(

I miss the days when there were still films that... you know... can qualify as films and didn't consist of appealing to whatever teens are into at the time. Sure, there was that part of old cinema. There was lots of it but at least they were still good films and not just shit like it seems to be a lot of today.

I suppose it just comes with having more films out but... goddamn it, it seems that even the movies that are supposed to be great and "instant classics" don't even hold a candle to the great films from those times, you know?

I am seriously disappointed that nobody has mentioned Star Wars yet. Unfortunately, there is no way I could narrow my list of favorite films down to just ten titles, and absolutely no way I could put them in any sort of order. I'm the same way with music, really -- I don't have favorite songs, or favorite artists, for that matter. There's too much good stuff out there to pick favorites.

3) Fight Club- I don't think I even need to explain this one...
Actually, yes. You do.

At least to me.

I didn't get the hype over it, honestly :/
A lot of people like it because they want to seem manly for watching it and think what Tyler Durden thinks. They want to be him, since he seems so cool. (At least, that's what I thought it was.)

I like it because it is a well made film. Fincher plays with the 4th wall so much it's silly. The "Let me tell you a little bit about Tyler Durden" scene is one of my favorite scenes of all the movies I have watched. It breaks the fourth wall and it's hilarious the whole way through. The way Fincher puts split second clips of Tyler before he even is introduced adds a sense of foreshadowing and messes with the viewer's mind. It just does so much to fuck with you mind. It's also hilarous and featured fantastic acting from Norton, Pitt, and Helena Bonham Carter. And Meat Loaf as Bob, of course. One of the first lines of the movie: "This is Bob. Bob has ***** tits." makes me laugh every time I hear it.

So most people like it because it is a manly movie and such, I like it because it is just well made. I guess I did need to explain it.

These are some pretty sophisticated lists, I'm impressed (mostly because they're similar to mine and obviously anyone similar to me is intelligent enough to be considered awesome):

1. To Kill A Mockingbird
2. The Empire Strikes Back
3. The Shawshank Redemption
4. Blade Runner
5. Schindler's List
6. The Return of the King
7. Dr. Strangelove
8. Forrest Gump
9. Interview With The Vampire
10. City of Lost Children

On a related note, some of you need to grow some balls and put some genre movies in your top 10. There's no shame in having Star Wars or Lord of the Rings in your favorite movie list, be proud of your nerdiness!

Hm. Okay, I can respect that. I was half expecting you to go on about how manly it is or about how much of a badass Pitt was in it, to be honest :p

But, yes, I can see where you're coming from there.

Though, it was a good film, I preferred Fincher's other work. Which is why Zodiac was on my list earlier :D

In no order, except for Forrest Gump which is my all time favourite.

Forrest Gump
Saving Private Ryan
Toy Story 2
Black Hawk Down
Tomorrow When the War Began (Australian film adaptation of a novel which is basically Australias version of Red Dawn)
Kickass
28 Days Later (not 'weeks later', that one sucked)
Sherlock Holmes (even though I've only seen it once)
Platoon

Ten which spring to mind in (as is the fashion) in no paticular order:

Stranger Than Paradise (Jarmusch 1984)
Scorpio Rising (Anger 1968)
Double Indemnity (Wilder 1944)
Vertigo (Hitchcock 1958)
Blade Runner (Scott 1982)
Abigails Party (Leigh 1977)
2001: A Space Odyssey (Kubrick 1968)
M (Lang 1931)
Taxi Driver (Scorsese 1976)
Kiss Me Deadly (Aldrich 1955)
Eyes Without a face/Les Yeux Sans Visage (Franju 1960)

Tried to keep it to one per director. As I am sure with most people not a definitive list but ten (ahem) films which spring to mind. "IBlackKitel" chose nine so I chose his/her tenth slot to add to mine.

EDIT: Someone mentioned M (Lang 1931) That has to be in my list, bye bye Tokyo Story (Ozu 1953).
