I'm going to give a heads up and say that I am probably the world's shittiest sniper with the exception of one game series:
Gears of War
Seriously, I can typically get a head shot or body shot, sometimes without even using the scope and I always get a perfect active reload. My friends used to say that I was a liability and seventeen bullets in my gun meant seventeen Locust without heads.

So while I can mention Fallout 3 or the Halo series at the end of the day there is only one for me.

I'm divine in TF2, or everyone else is crap. About the only thing that manages to kill me is spies. and I usually have a 25:1 KD on f.ex 2fort

I actually really hate sniping on both of these games.

I like sniping but I've never really been good at it, except for MW1, but in MW2 somehow sniping just became really hard so I stuck to just about any other weapon and avoid sniping like the plague.

I see some good picks here, but I felt i needed to sign up just to mention a few very worthy games.

1)Black Hawk Down-PC
Sniping on maps that have NO LIMITS is a dream, and using the MCRT.300 Tactical for kills over 1Kilometer feels GREAT.

2)Joint Ops-PC
For the same reason as BHD and both were made buy Novalogic. The difference here is the inclusion of vehicles, which made it easy to hop on a dirtbike and get a good mile or so from the action, then just pick off enemy players from that distance.

3)Perfect Dark-N64
To be honest I ONLY play most games like this in 1 hit kill mode, which means that using the Farsight to see and shoot through walls equates to complete ownage.

In conclusion, if you are a fan of sniping the fist two games I mentioned are really two of the best IMHO. If you have a friend playing the medic role and carrying an assault rifle you will own. Also since there is no range finder on the scope in joint ops (and you do need to actually adjust your scope for range in JO and BHD) a spotter using binoculars can be a huge asset. Together you will rule the battlefield.

I find the battlefields series is the best, also if "Sniper elite" is that one where you have to shoot a a tanks fuel tank, and where you spend almost the whole time moving rather than camping, then it's not only unrealistic but also pretty low quality
unrealistic? You do realize that in real life, if you simply camped and started shooting you would get killed pretty quickly. Sniper rifles make a lot of noise, that and the muzzle flash will give away your position after the first shot or two. In real life, sniping is about finding the perfect spot to snipe from and then waiting for the perfect opportunity to arise and seizing it. After that, then you get the hell out of there before you're found and killed. I will admit that the fuel tank part is unrealistic, but I believe that sometimes sacrifices have to be made for the sake of good gameplay and a fun game.

and this may just be me, but i really hate those guys who pick up the sniper in l4d, its more about crowd control than target focusing.
Its a situational weapon and sometimes it can be very effective to have a sniper on the team. of course there are portions of the game when you absolutely don't want a sniper rifle but then each of the weapon types (assault, sniper, shotgun) have their advantages and disadvantages.

Also, in the right circumstances the sniper rifle can be just as good as the other guns at crowd control, or even better because of the massive penetration.

Conditions favourable to using the sniper rifles in L4D:

1) Distance, any map area that is open enough to give you long range shots can benefit from a sniper.

2) Ammo conservation, if you're likely to run out of ammo thats a good reason to take the rifle.

3) choke points, if the zombies have to bunch up and run though a choke point you can scythe them down with the sniper rifle.

Situations not to take the sniper rifle in:

1) hordes coming at you from all sides.

2) indoors or otherwise confined.

3) Tank.

Of course is does somewhat depend on the skill of the sniper too, and the latency he has to the server. there's no point taking a sniper rifle if you can't hit anything.

unrealistic? Snip
Whoa...
Old thread is old
Short answer - Yes, a real "sniper elite" game would be forty minutes of laying covered in a Ghillie suit in a bush somewhere, ten seconds of maths to make sure you've got the trajectory and wind speed calculated, five seconds of shooting and ten minutes of escaping.

So you can't really play the realism card for Sniper Elite either

You should probably rename your thread "Top 10 Games to Play as a Sniper" to avoid all the confusion.

Also, what most games consider to be a sniper is actually a marksman [http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Designated_marksman].

Manji022 beat me to the punch on this one. Joint Ops was the BEST games if you truely were into sniping, played the absolute crap outta that game back in the day, tried reinstalling it recently but I couldn't get it to work, bah!! But yea, the maps are HUGE ( could have up to 90 people in a game!) and the sniping was challenging for sure, especially going against another sniper, just trying to find a guy shooting at you from a mile away was so fun. Man I miss that game.

I just ordered a new game which I didn't see on here, sniper: ghost warrior, which I will try tonight, and some people are saying it's the best sniper game ever on the steam forums and it looks pretty damn good.

No MDK or MDK 2? What a shame, what a shame, what a shame...

Also Battlefield, all of them except my favorite, 2142. Looking forward to returning to Gulf of Oman and Wake Island, but I really hope for a 2142 expansion pack or even a stand alone sequel. Bring back Titan Mode!

No love for Silent Scope, eh, Escapist? I loved that game. Taking out anything from a truck to a helicopter in one, beautiful, flukey shot...

Other good games for sniping:

Max Payne - bullet cam!
Gears of War series - not so much deathmatch, but in horde mode it's great.
Halo - gotta love some Team Snipers on Timberland or Hemorrhage, plus it's a good campaign weapon too.

I don't play games of the shooting variety much anymore, but I'm going to have to say SW:BF2 and FO:NV. Oh god I loved that .50 in NV. Oh, and do the guided rockets from BF2 count as sniping?
