I like too many games to narrow it down to 3 but if I must.

And I really can't decide between

Mushihisama Futari

and

@ Sean Hollyman love your avatar :D If I could play a game as batman eating ponies it would make my top 3 instantly.

Arkham City
Dark Souls
And if Persona 4 counts then that takes the top spot. If not... I'll come back to you.

1) Mass Effect series (2 most notably) - Never been more attached to any other characters than those in these games.
2) TES IV: Oblivion - Absolutely amazing, and much more engaging than Skyrim.
3) Umm... Minecraft I guess? - Spend hundreds and hundreds of hours on a game that cost less than £10 when I bought it, with some of the most addictive gameplay I've ever experienced.

The Pokemon and Ratchet and Clank games are also very good, but just didn't take up as much time as the others or weren't that good story-wise.

Skyrim. The vanilla game isn't all that great. With mods: it's perfect.
What the hell mods are you using? I haven't found any that change the game so drastically that I could see them changing someones opinion from "meh" to "FUCK YES!"

Sure, it had pacing issues, and everyone will make fun of how this should be on a favorite movie list and not game list, but there's not a single longer game that I've played as many times as this (maybe 10 times through in the past few years).

Wicked fun multiplayer, and the metacommunity that Valve games normally form (such as the Gmod videos, etc.) of L4D in particular is absolutely hilarious. Finally, the responsibilities the game places on you and your multiplayer teammates is really cool, and I like a game where you actually need to cooperate to win.

Troubled development aside, this is one of my favorite games of all time. Very experimental, happy to see something relatively new (go ahead and say that point-and-click adventure games have been around forever, this feels relatively new).

Battlefield(Both bad companies and 3) Gears of War(All 3 in their own rights) DayZ and with an honourable mentions to minecraft and the elder scrolls series this gen
Those are the games I've poured most of my time into and that have grabbed my attention

And I say the DayZ mod because it has blown me away with how fun and thrilling it is to play that.

SO what are your top 3 game of this gen?

Mines are

Probably best game i have ever played. that dark and gritty atmosphere. gunplay is best ever and setting is best. Zone is incredible. Entire game is Masterpiece

Best prequel to one of the best game ever. nuff said

Maximus AWESOMENESS!!!
Thats a fantastic selection, most people assume Crysis was just a tec demo but they obviously never played it because that was fun s**t. The aliens are the most creative I have yet seen and jabbing a soldier so hard he cartwheels airborne through a corrugated iron wall is hilarious.

Also both the other games are fantastic, probably most of my favorite modern shooters.

Why are people so bad at this?

PS2 games don't count. Games released for PC well within the life cycle of previous generation consoles don't count.

Dark Souls
Bioshock
Red Dead Redemption

Wait...

1) The Mass Effect Series. All brilliant games and truly groundbreaking in terms of narrative and series continuity. Just an amazing series and my favorite games of all time.

2) The Witcher 2. It may not be as memorable to most of you here, but I honestly think it's one of the best games ever made. Tight controls, intuitive combat and a narrative style which most other RPGs can learn from. And the graphics were awesome.

3) Dark Souls. Gaming purity. Hard, but fair. If you took the time to master it you were rewarded with one of the most engaging experiences in gaming.

Honorable Mentions: TESV: Skyrim, Batman Arkham Asylum/City, COD4 and Fallout 3.

Too many mods to list, honestly. The main problem with the game is one of ambiance and another of interface. The core content is fantastic. Call me shallow, but how my game looks and is presented is almost as important as everything else. My modding preferences aim to fix those issues. The Realistic Lighting mod is mandatory for dark nights and dungeons and lighting that is otherwise dramatic and believable. The mods that fix the menu system and quick selection feature are a must. Between those two the game is 80% fixed. I have a mod that adds magic spells, many of them not damage dealing but tactical. Cheaters Tower is a very useful tool for testing a character build without committing a ton of time to it. The rest of my mods are subtle visual changes.
