What? Most of your list isn't even a shooter. Grand Theft Auto isn't in first person, and Oblivion is a swords-n-sorcery type RPG that takes place in first person.

Mine will have to be Call of Duty 4 Modern Warfare - despite its successors' genericness, this one nailed what a great modern military shooter should be.

My second vote will have to go toward Singularity - its time manipulation mechanics are second to none and it even manages it without bullet time! Plus the level design, aesthetics, and graphics were pretty damned stellar-looking to me. My only real complaint is its story, which is OK, I guess, but that wasn't why I played it. Sure, it took a page out of Bioshock's book, but the only thing it did worse than Bioshock was story. Everything else was much better here.

My third vote goes toward RAGE. I loved it, every minute.

What I've seen of Resistance 3 looks great, so it might take the place of one of these once I get around to beating it.

Honorable mentions go to Crysis 2, Halo 3, and Bioshock. Yes, I have tons of complaints against Bioshock and critically I would rate it far lower than most people. But what the game does right is good enough for me to keep wanting to play through it again.

Well, i guess GTA4 came up in my mind because I PLAY it like a FPS. When on foot and holding a weapon you see a crosshair and you can aim & zoom in with right mouse, feels exactly like a FPS. When in a vehicle, i switch to cockpit view, so driving/flying also 'feels' like playing a FPS (where you shoot out of vehicles).

And Oblivion becomes a FPS when switching to 1st person (shock, some ppl never did it?) and shooting things with a bow.

Haha :D

If we're talking shooters in general, this is my list.

1. Vanquish
2. Gears of War
3. Uncharted 2: Among Thieves

I enjoyed Deus Ex: Human Revolution quite a bit, but I have no intention of listing it because I would put that more in the RPG category, the "shooter" part of it was ok, but that wasn't the main strength.

If they have to be "First" Person Shooters specifically, read this one instead.

1. BioShock
2. Unreal Tournament 3
3. Crysis (Was hoping I could find something else to list, but in general I would say that the overall batch of "F"PS games in the past 5 years have been getting pretty bland lately. Good game, don't get me wrong, just was hoping I had something I'd consider "favorite" worthy on this list.)

In no particular order whatsoever:

. Resistance 2
. Killzone 3
. Bioshock (I know it's not solely an FPS but you shoot a lot of shit with alot of guns).

In order from favorite to 3rd favorite:
Fallout 3 if it counts.
Borderlands.
Bioshock.
Edit: Other people seem to say Oblivion can count. If it does I'll knock Bioshock of the list and put Oblivion at the top instead.

Halo Combat Evolved Anniversary
Portal 2
Team Fortress 2

Definitely the best games of this gen. I know Portal 2 isn't technically a FPS, but it is in first person and you have a gun. Enough said.

Does the orange box really count as one game? as it is 3 games.

I'm saying Half life 2, modern warfare & bioshock .

Call of Duty 4 (It's a shame the series has been watered down after the success of this one.)
Battlefield 3 (Graphically amazing, shame it's lacking mods on the PC and the consoles get the shaft on map size and player count.)
Team Fortress 2 (Even though we all know it's a war-themed hat simulator I think it counts.)

Orange box it not just one game, that and most of the games in it came out in the previous gen...

also OP said top 3 FPS games, not series.

As for me:
1.TF2

2.Metro 2033

3.S.T.A.L.K.E.R.

Top 3 if remakes are allowed:

1.TF2

2.Metro 2033

3.Serious Sam: First Encounter HD (Didn't see that one coming did ya?)

Third person and not a shooter.

[Edit:Apparently Oblivion can be first person. Still not a shooter.]
While I agree that Oblivion is not a shooter it's definitely not supposed to be played in the 3rd person. At least not without zooming in on the PC version to pull that "over the shoulder" view that Resident Evil now uses.

Gah, you're the third person to call me out on that, GTA4 is just ever so blatantly third person I jumped at it like a kitten into an extra elegant ball of yarn. Neglecting to notice our friend Stranglove's other oversights.

There haven't really been that many good shooters this generation, at least, not ones I've played anyway. But my top three, from a purely technical point of view, would probably look something like this:

1,Team Fortress 2
2.Borderlands
3.Left 4 Dead 2

If you were to ask me what my top 3 games were overall, within the FPS genre, then it'd look a bit different.

1.Borderlands
2.S.T.A.L.K.E.R.
3. Team Fortress 2

I'm not particularly surprised that no-one has mentioned Borderlands, because it was a tiny bit repetitive and lacked a bit of the polish of some of the bigger-budget games, but I was promised an FPRPS (First Person Role-Playing Shooter) and that's exactly what I got. Three play-throughs and half a lifetime later and it's still one of my favourite games. It's not perfect, but it satisfies my tastes and provides me with hours of enjoyment.
