I'm sadden by the lack of Hugh Laurie or Stephan Fry on anyone's list. Sure they're primarily TV but I find them both very talented
While they aren't among my very favourite actors, they are easily two of my favourite personalities and comedians.

...okay, after more thorough consideration; they are among my favourite actors.
Ya, I guess they are more fitting in a "best comedians list" guess I just had some fanboy juices bubbling. However I will NOT be so lenient with my pick of Abigail Breslin as one of the greatest child actresses. Little Miss Sunshine has me in tears EVERY TIME

1) Liam Nesson. The man is a god.
2) Robert Downey Jr. Fantastic actor in everything I've seen him in.
3) Johnny Depp. I admire his ability to play drastically different roles, and be amazing in all of them.
4) Harrison Ford. He needs no explanation.
5) Sean Connery. The last word on James Bond. And so damn smooth.

Huh, a shameful lack of actresses on this list. Oh well.

And an honorable mention to Clint Eastwood.

Top 5:
Robert Downey Jr.
Samuel L. Jackson
Morgan Freeman
John Travolta
and...Nicholas Cage I suppose. This is in a random order.

(By the way afaceforradio, Bruce Willis' role in the Die Hard movies is as John McClain, not John McLean)

1) Johnny Depp PoTC, Sweeney Todd, Charlie and the Chocolate Factory
2) John Cusack Everything he touches. Gross Point Blank comes to mind.
3) Robert Downey Jr. Again, everything.
4) James Woods Soo exciting to watch, even in an otherwise dull movie.
5) Viggo Mortensen This guy is so expressive. He hardly needs to say a thing.

LOL at all the Nick Cage; aside from a few quirky roles I think he's terrible.

Anyhoo,
Deniro
Daniel Day-Lewis
Marlon Brando
Harrison Ford
Tommy Lee Jones

Edit: Bill Murray too, idc if that makes six.

Wow, took long enough for someone to mention Gary Oldman.

I don't really have a top 5, so I'll go with a few that I like that have not been mentioned yet in this thread:

Tim Roth
Woody Harrelson
Sean Penn
Dylan Moran
Kathy Bates

And booo to the guy that listed Ben Affleck! lol

1. Tom Hanks: Forest Gump, Saving Private Ryan
2. Owen Wilson (I'll get flamed for this, I know it): Marley and Me, Starskey and Hutch, Sanghei Nights
3. Jackie Chan: Sanghei Nights, the first Rush Hours
4. Sean Connery: Every movie he's in he's amazing.
5. Harrison Ford: He's also pretty damn awesome in all the movies he's been in, Fugitive, Indiana Jones and Star Wars

Clint Eastwood's good too, but you said only 5.

EDIT: Oh, and Will Smith is cool too.

1-5) Clint Eastwood

but in all seriousness, Tom Hanks is my favorite actor. He can play so many diverse roles convincingly. Not many actors can play the lead role in "Big".

Working within the assumed limits on this "All Time" list, i.e. ignoring theater and TV, restricting myself to the last 30 years or so, and in no particular order (but including actresses)...

- John Hurt
Remember Chancellor Sutler in V for Vendetta? Hurt played him, and also his *exact counterpoint* in 1984 superbly. Need I mention the chest burster?

- Jim Broadbent
As a character actor, he's that guy who's been in everything but you can never remember his name. This is a tribute to how well he plays the role, rather than playing himself.

- Brad Pitt
Can play the handsome, generic lead male in any piece of Hollywood fluff, but can range into convincingly deranged (12 monkeys, Fight Club). Remember the boxing gypsy in Snatch? He also perfectly sends up some of his own vacuous roles in Burn After Reading.

- Cate Blanchett
Manages an excellent range of roles and films, despite the appalling lack of such opportunities. From shy and withdrawn in Sense & Sensibility to supreme authority in Elizabeth and in the Lord of the Rings films.
Also excellent in Veronica Guerin.

- Sigourney Weaver
Sure, I'm an Alien fanboy, but can you think of any other woman in the lead role of an action film who can actually put some depth into the character?

EDIT: I feel bad about not mentioning Meryl Streep, but shamefully I've never seen a film with her in.
