I find the lack of IX to be deeply disturbing. I think it and VI blow the rest out of the water.

Also, I like how it's become cool to hate on VII. It was a well made and progressive game for its era. Overhyped or not, I can't see good justification for saying it sucks when accounting for its age.

Of the final fantasy's (from the main series) I've played this is my opinion, best to worst: IX, VI, X, IV, XIII-2, VII, XIII, VIII. I like to consider this unbiased of nostalgia considering if we allowed Nostalgia VIII would be my favourite even though it's not the best thing in the world.

It really doesn't get enough love. The level of character customization created through such a simple development system is pure genius. The story is overly long, the characters are a little bit bland, and the graphics are somehow worse than IV, but it has some unique dungeons, some of my favorite SNES music, and of course that awesome job system.

The Clash on the Big Bridge and adding Gilgamesh as a character is enough to justify it on any list for me =D

My list usually pisses people off because of what my number one is:
5.) FF VI
4.) FF X-2 (don't judge me)
3.) FF X (LPing the International, which is gonna be fun)
2.) FF IX
1.) FF XII (mainly the International one since it's soooo good)

That's right XII is my favorite Final Fantasy game out of all of them.

And XII had a brilliant world, amazing art design and very addictive combat / hunting mechanics. Though I can't say I got hooked by the story and only really liked Balthier and Basche, it had a lot going for it.

This is what I meant, most FFs are really good at certain things and if you're into that, then it'll be your favourite.

I have to defend my love of FF XII all the time. Heck I mainly play the international one now which helps improve my points, but still people give XII too much flak if you ask me.

XII isn't bad. It's easily best recent FF game. It's more MMO like too, so people more fond of that genre are likely to like it. Given your list, though, I'm going to go out on a limb and guess you're younger than most of the other people here. Hard to say how much nostalgia plays into these lists.

I am younger (18), but I've played most of the numbered FF games. The only ones I've not play are 1, 3, 4, and 5 (I do own V though and I'm gonna start playing it). My list isn't based on nosalgia, but on what I've played. Now I didn't play any FF games when I had a PS1, but I've played a lot of them now that I have a PS3. Heck FF X was my first ever FF game and it's barely at 3rd on my list and it might even go down.

I like 1. There, I said it. I loved 7, and I probably stretched out my play of 6 over too many months so I lost track of the plot lines (didn't get it on SNES, only played on PS1 re-release so it my exposure came way out of order).

My main gripe on 7 is that none of the characters play any differently, except for limit breaks that just mean some are good and some suck. Your style of play never changes based on character, just on what materia/equipment you have and there is definitely a RIGHT way and WRONG way to do that. Anything but KOTR on auto-cast followed up by Cloud's limit break is just a waste.

That's why I like 1. Your entire play-through and approach to combat as well as even the order you do some dungeons in is totally different depending on which classes you choose. For that reason and because it was the first NES game to truly capture my heart, I put 1 at the top, followed by 9 and 6 in a 2-way tie. Then 7, then 6. 8 can wipe my ass.

Out of all the ones I've played, VIII was the worst. Haven't played much of VI yet.

And then there's FF-IX. I don't ever put it in a "top X in series" because it's by far my favorite game of all times. The characters, the graphic design, the story, the music, modafockin VIVI, Eiko's "sugar"! and the very last battle with the Death of the Time itself. I'm a melancholic guy and that game is pure melancholy, so go figure...

Always wanted to play the internationals, so this post is just for me to shake my fist of jealously at you. *shakes fist*

I personally wasn't a huge fan of 12, but if you liked it then that's all that really matters, great for you.

I am more in favor of

1: FF VI (Best heroes and villains and general world)

2: FF IV (Smooth, simplistic, great music)

3: FF TACTICS (Greatest depth and deep political story with very well done strategy elements and progression system)

4: FF V (Best bonus boss tactics, I really had to work at this to get the perfect combinations)

5: FF VII (Most people demand this to be in a number 1 spot, although it was a ground breaking game on release with
incredible story and graphics it just doesn't hold up to the test of time for me like the previous.)

VIII has no place in any top anything FF. It was made by what I like to refer the "B team" of Square Soft/Enix. Where they try to reinvent the wheel. They switched back to the core for FFIX which was great then started to slip again as the series got higher until all we have is the drek of Final Fantasy XIII/XIII-2 and XIV that almost bankrupted the company.

Well... considering i've only actually fully completed III, VII, VIII, X and XIII i'l just have to put those in order. I have tried playing VI, IX and XII but I just can't get into them, whether it be age (VI), art style and the general feel (IX) or I just plain didn't like it (XII).

So for me it's...

1. FFX
2. FFVII
3. FFVIII
4. FFXIII
5. FFIII

For me i have only played final fantasy 9, So for me:

You know, it's not necessarily a bad list. IX is my favourite, by miles. I still play it pretty frequently. After that it's a tie between 8 and 10 for me.
