1. Final Fantasy 8 (PS1)
2. Final Fantasy 9 (PS1)
3. Final ahhh had you going then: Skies of Arcadia Legends (Gamecube)
4. Final Fantasy 10 || Zelda's
5. Pokemon Red/Blue/Yellow/Silver/Gold/Ruby (they had to be mentioned i did grow up with them)

Yeah theres a hell of a lot of final fantasy in there, but it was one of my first games on the ps1 (and that was my first console) AND yes i cheated by adding or's (||) and doing forward slashes for the pokemon but i definatly aint giving it anymore than 5, in fact the only reason there on there is because i grew up with them...and i couldnt remember the name of the other game i wanted to put... (it was a cross between chromehounds and gundam on the ps2).

My top 5, huh? Are we talking all game-specific computers (as in not PCs) or JUST consoles (no PCs or Hand-helds)?

For JUST consoles:

*Tombi/Tomba (it was named differently for Europe/American versions)
*Final Fantasy VIII
*Suikoden series (Just pick any of the 5 main games, they're all pretty much the same story/gameplay lol)
*Majora's Mask
*Lost Odyssey

If we're including Hand-Helds, swap Majora's Mask for Link's Awakening.

Well there are some obvious ones like mario and sonic and metroid but since everybody'll probably be sick of seeing those:

Shadowman (PS1)
Plok (SNES)
Jurassic Park (SNES)
Altered Beast (Megadrive)
and even if it is one of the obvious ones it's still one of my favourite games ever
Metal Gear Solid (PS1)

I am not going to bother listing a top 5 as that would be impossible but I am going to list a game I don't think gets mentioned enough. U.N. Squadron for the SNES.

Pokemon Sapphire
Jak and Daxter
Rayman whichever was on PS2

I can't really think of anymore and I know that these aren't exactly old.

Pitfall (Atari 2600)
Legend of Zelda (NES)
Super Mario Bros. (NES)
Secret of Mana (SNES)
Final Fantasy VII (PS1)

These stand out to me as true classics for their respective generations and consoles, but there are many more games that could stand beside each of these.

When you say "classic", how many generations back are we looking at?

Ah, fuggit. This'll be easy either way...

5) Sonic the Hedgehog
4) Sonic the Hedgehog 2
3) Vectorman 2
2) Vectorman
1) Sonic 3 & Knuckles
Well according to you, 4 generations ago. Or just genesis...
"Well according to you"? Does my list bother you? You asked what were my top 5 classic games, and there they are.

Is something wrong with that?
Short Answer. no.

Longer Answer. Since i've noticed many of the users of this site (apparently not in this thread) started playing during the days of xbox/ps2/gamecube [the final relevant Nintendo console/nonportable device] days. So classic could mean PS1, or even old pc games such as warcraft 1/2 or diablo 1... which i probably should of said. i liked those games a hellva lot more than x-men.

I disagree, 3 was downright annoying.
4 was infuriating.
and 5 while probably better than those 2, was still a thorn in your side. [you recruit a third of the stars before you get your castle... wtf is that]

Gameplay wise only. Story each one was pretty good. Although the era of voice overs has definitely ended Suikoden... at least in the US

Never owned a console back in those days.

Favorite ancient computer games:
Syndicate
Commander Keen
DOOM
Batman :D (Commodore 64)
Pong (every other game can suck it!)

Doom? Ancient? I don't know about the term "classic", but I would never call a young game from 1993 ancient.

And ouch, I feel sorry for anyone who didn't have a nice Super Nintendo or Famicom in their childhood.

Flashback The Quest for Identity- It's literally the Uncharted of the 16 bit era crazy platforming and shooting. It has 'movies' on the Genesis/SNES, no joke, it's quoted as "The CD game on a cartridge".
I had almost forgotten this game until about 2 weeks ago, and decided to look for it on GoG. Not there unfortunately. AMAZING GAME.

Soooo

Flashback
Goldeneye 64 (4 player remote mines / caves)
Leisure Suit Larry 3 : Passionate Patty
Loom
Monkey Island

....I think I like you.

I'll just replace MGS with Sonic 3 and Knuckles because I think I spent longer playing it.

Lemmings (Master System)
Majoras Mask (N64)
Ocarina of Time (N64)
Pokemon Snap (N64)
Gain Ground (Master System)
No particular order, just the most hours played as a kid. I got the N64 when I was about 8. I remember playing the Master System when I was 4.

Compared to later games, I agree that 3 was a tad more annoying. Controls were clunky, battles were a bit of a pain and do forth and the way it was set out (the triad thing of constantly being asked if you wanted to switch between the 3 main characters every "chapter") was just a pain that could have been done without. However, you have to remember that it WAS the first Suikoden on PS2, so they were trying something different since they could make it with 3D style graphics as opposed to flat, 2D battlefields like in the previous 2 games.

S4 wasn't so bad, though the battle system was downgraded quite a bit in only being allowed 4 characters per team. The combo attacks were a lot smoother and the differing art style compared to what 3 gave us really improved on previous games in the series. Story-wise, it was a tad lacking and that final boss... omg what a pain!

S5 is probably my favourite of the series. 4 was the first Suikoden I played, so that'll always be favoured in my eyes, but 5 was just that little bit better in my view.

I do agree that the voice-overs kind of ruined it, but at least it was only certain characters who got actual lines in the game (battle cries/comments don't count imo). However, I feel there would be space for a well-made Suikoden 6, based around what happened after 3 and dealing with Hikusaak, ruler of Harmonia. Something with an impressive storyline... maybe something liking bringing together all 27 True Runes... I dunno.
