we've had several of thease thread before....excpet this time around I want to include cliche's you like/don't mind

[b/]like[/b]

-sci fi...specifically dark uninviting space ships, and blue lighting...also different alien races that "happen" to act like humans

-dramatic stuff happening in the rain and other "dramatic" weather....

-slow motion and explosions....

-the good guys winning

[b/]dislike[/b]

-so a charachter is working on somthing really really important related to work or a dream...but then NOPE its not not important your *insert somthing stupid like familiy or children* is whats REALLY important...double points if they could have done both but throw it all away as to not hurt a little kids feelings or some shit...the worst example of hollywood trying to teach us morals

-your a women?..babies will makes you happy....no objections, they will...

-female "action" charachters who arent actually treated "eaqually" as in they never take a hit...they only fight other women or they get kidnapped (for being stupid)

-"I have been wronged and am seeking revenge....so therefore it is ok for me to act like amorally reprehensible twat and hurt inocents"[footnote/]another version of this which isn't enough of a "thing" to be a clich'e is when the charachter is a parent...so therefore they have moral right of way "for their kids" like the comic Jennifer blood...somthing adressed in Kill Bill[/footnote]

-One-liners in films that have accepted they are over the top action movies. When you have decided that you are just writing dumb fun in terms of action extend it to the dialogue, sure the rational part of my brain says I should hate this but at they end of the day films like Commando just can't be hated.
-'Magnificent Bastard' villians, because at the end of the day they either work to compliment a good protagonist or steal the spotlight away from a bad protagonist

[b/]Dislike[/b]
- When their is a team of protagonists and antagonists sqaured up to fight one another, the following occurence of a designated 'catfight' between each sides female characters.
-Zombie apocalypses. They arn't threatening (slightly more so with fast zombies but still non-threatening) and wouldn't work or lasts long for countless reasons (I'm sure there is a cracked.com article on this somewhere).
-When a pragmatic solution is turned down because ultimately it doesn't seem heroic enough, regardless of how much more viable it is compared to any other option.
-When a crisis occurs that only arises due to the stupidity of the main characters. I don't mean when the main characters couldn't have known the consequences of their actions that's acceptable, but when it is glaringly obvious that their actions are just idiotic and are only performed to allow the plot to progress.
-In a survival situation the innevitable death of characters that have had little dialogue or developement. Or the death of a character that was selfish and/or happy to sacrafice others (even for the sake of pragmatism).

No one doesn't know what the concept of an undead is. Oh come on! You never read the basic mechanic of an undead is?

Everyone clap at the end of the movie. Ok sometime it's reasonable but why? I doubt it will happen in real life.

The kid will saved the day (those children film). So you're telling us that a little kid with no training is superior to the regular trained soliders?

like:
- The underdog story.
- Romance subplots.
- The odd man out.

dislike:
- It's intentionally crappy so it's good. See Machette.
- Shaky cam.
- Lack of originality played off as homage. See Quentin Tarantino.
- The "no one believes the hero till it's too late" plotline. Usually disaster movies.
- Snarky animation movies. See Dreamworks.
- The "colorful" gang of "individuals" in either a horror or adventure movie.

The one you listed about the weather is called pathetic fallacy. /English nerd /See I know some stuff.

OT:
I like... well I suppose I like the fact no one knows what a zombie is, otherwise there would be no story. If it were to happen in real life, I can guarantee someone who saw a zombie would know what it is and know what do do.

I have to say, I like cheesy/cool/bad one-liners before a character does something, usually makes me laugh.

Sad back story's usually make my feel for the character more, if done properly.

Dislike:(probably a much longer list)
-Someone is killed but can somehow still talk for a while before actually dying. I've never been near a dying person but I guess it doesn't work that way. Also when they die just before giving away an important detail, it's been done so much it's not good any more. "The person who killed me was...*dies*"

-Guy likes girl (who always seem to be a ***** so he seems to just like her because she's attractive) girl doesn't like him. Guy persists and persists while girl keep saying she doesn't like him. In the last ten minutes of the movie, guy gets the girl. Dafuq?

-Guys are always cooky and crazy and fun-loving. Girls are uptight, boring, sometimes bitches who needs a man to show her how to have fun!

-A person is foreign but can speak fluent English but in a strong accent even if they apparently haven't been taught English.

I'm sure there's plenty more but I have to run away to shower now, sure I'll think of some while I'm in there.

-Betrayal, always makes the story more interesting, moreso when you don't see it coming but the clues hinting towards it was there all along.

Dislike
"It was all a dream" It's just a terrible plot device.

I like:

-Gas masks, power armor, and dusters/trench coats. The power armor and gas masks get extra points if they have glowy bits, and the dusters and trench coats get extra points if they're black (or at least in a dark colour).

-In fantasy stories, when a character from a normally "evil" race or species decides to switch sides and help the heroes. It's the same with characters having normally vicious monsters, like giant spiders, as faithful pets.

-Having the POV character hallucinating, tripping balls, or otherwise not perceiving reality correctly, especially if it's in a video game. For some reason I also always seem to get a kick out of that tired horror plot twist where, at the end, it turns out that all the "monsters" the protagonist was killing were actually normal, innocent people and they were just having a psychotic breakdown the whole time.

-Talking mice. Not because I'm a furry or anything, it's just nostalgia; I grew up reading books and watching cartoons featuring talking woodland critters, and the love of them has simply stuck with me.

-Random humor. Like this video right here. [http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fR8cI4HHUvQ] That video is hardly clever, insightful, or even unique, but christ is it funny. And if you're worried about following that link, it's just a 20 second GMod video featuring Commander Shepard screaming "MOMMY!" and making scary faces, all nestled safely in the middle of the Uncanny Valley and delightfully free of context.

I hate:

-Any exposition dump that starts with the words "as you know..." I hate this so much, it's unbelievable. Hearing those words makes me want to punch things, preferably the extremities of the writer that wrote them. It's just makes me mad. About this mad, in fact. [http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=f6QBqCNuB3g] <--- (Different video of Shepard screaming and making scary faces)

-Easily avoidable heroic sacrifices. I'm iffy about the idea of self-sacrifice as a whole, but sometimes I don't mind if it's handled in a specific (if often contrived and phlebotinum-induced) way. But when there are very clear alternatives to the hero having to die that are arbitrarily closed off or inexplicably ignored, that is when I start breaking out the pitchforks.

especially when they sound perfectly fine and can speak quite cleary without so much as a gasp or a cough

*heartfelt speech*....that about wraps it up..bye now!

I saw a documentry a few nights ago where they essentially showed a man on his deathbed...it was a slow progression that involved slipping in and out of conciousness...death doesnt seem so cut and dry

even better when the movie frames it as though she is JUSTIFIED in taking away all his fun "childish" stuff

I dont think I particually like heroic sacrifices (particualy the main charachter whom weve become attatched) I feel like its being sad for the sake of being sad

- Villains with really crazy and unique weapons, like a bear trap on a chain.

Dislike

- Romance subplot being forced into a movie/tv show/game etc just because said piece of entertainment 'needs' a romance subplot.

- When the 'good guys' win.

- Protagonists who refuse to kill anyone because of some misguided sense of justice. Even when killing one evil person will save hundreds of innocent lives.

One that really annoys me is the nerdy loser guy pining for the super popular girl.

Also giving a badass villain a sympathetic backstory.

Like:
- Heroic self-sacrifice. Y'know, the whole, "Go on, I'll hold 'em off!" thing.
- When the hero sees someone they care about being threatened or hurt and goes berserk.
- "Gentle giant" type characters.

Dislike:
- "America, fuck yeah!"
- Crowbarred romantic subplots. They can work fine when done right, but I really don't like how they often get jammed in just for the sake of having one.
- When the damsel in distress does something "badass" just after being rescued. It's like the writers are saying, "Noooo, no, really, she's not a damsel in distress, she's a totally capable female character... who needed rescuing anyway." Either make her a damsel in distress or make her capable, not some half-assed cross between the two.

...

I could probably list these things all day.

Depends on the situation.

I've seen a few that can talk quite easily and some that can't. Had a chat with someone who was dying of a gutshot for about 4 minutes before he passed.

Though I never managed to get an evil plan out of someone before they died.

On Topic....

Like...

Over the top fight scenes. Like Jackie Chan and Jet Li movies. Bouncing around and kicking arse is always fun to watch.

Buddy movies (as long as it's a decent plot). Stuff like Stand By Me.

Dislike...

Sex scenes just for the sake of having boobs. I like Strike Back (TV program about British special forces) but the third series just had sex scenes for no reason whatsoever. "Hey, we have 5 minutes to fill ..... BOOBS.

Kid saves the day. It wouldn't happen ..... EVER.

Animal saves the day. That's less likely than the bloody kid.

Only about one cliche I truly like....CLOAKS.....Cloaks are overused. They disguise your identity and give off a sense of mystery and power. And even though cloaks are used a bit to much.....they sure do look badass on anyone who wears them.

Dislike

Errr...the damsel in distress cliche?

Like:
-Rags to riches
-Good always triumphs evil (opposite sometimes, gotta keep things fresh!)

dislike:
-Always winning the girl's heart
-'manly' crap every guy is supposed to like.
-Silly cocking of shotguns before you shoot them when they've already been cocked. THAT DISCHARGES THE SHELL
