I think Monster Hunter is a pretty cool guy, he fights dragons and doesn't afraid of anything... Okay, I got that out of my system.
Does a character still count as a silent protagonist if they have dialogue options but otherwise, don't talk? If so, then the male main character from P3P. If not, then, eh.
(Then again, he did scream a couple of words in combat, like "Persona," and "Awesome!")

Gordon motherfucking Freeman. No doubt. Best silent protagonist ever. Seeing as he has to put up with Alyx's retardation and he doesn't remove her spine with his crowbar he must be the best.

Every silent protagonist except Gordon Freeman is just a protagonist that doesn't talk. By keeping Freeman silent after it became unfashionable in the industry, Valve plays around with the concept and makes it serve a purpose. They build a character that has personality because he reflects those around him, yet serves as the immersive avatar because of the unbroken continuity of the series and first person perspective. This is the best of both worlds because the player can play themselves, and get sucked into the situation, yet also identify with a compelling character that has a vital presence in the gameworld. It wouldn't begin to work if the storytelling wasn't so adept, but as it stands Gordon is the most eloquent mute in gaming.
Lieutenant Jimmy Patterson from the Medal of Honor series. He fought his way through Omaha Beach, battled through the streets of Arnhem, raided a waepons factory, destroyed two U-Boats, and stole a prototype Horten HO-229 and never uttered a single word. I hope I made a good point for him here.
