As the kind of person who would rather ghost in and out of my neighbors property and take something valuable to get back at them for their insults of my lawn gnomes dressed as popular video game figures, rather then smash up their holiday ornamentation or something I am into stealth games.

I started out playing Thief, and loving every minute of it. There were then a lot of not so great spin offs. My most recent treasure (I say recent but its been around for a while) stealth/assassination game favorite is Assassins Creed.

With the news of Assassins Creed II coming out my interest in leaving my enemy with a lot less valuables and perhaps a slit jugular with no one the wiser has been rekindled.

So, what are your all time favorite stealth games?

Edit: Stealth games that I enjoyed:
1. Thief: The Dark Project
2. (I forgot the title of this one) but it takes place in WWII and you (in some of the missions) play as a sniper with throwing knives and garrote wire.
3. Assassins Creed
4. Sly Copper (always fun for those rainy days :D)

Tenchu, despite how crappy it's gone lately.

Despite loving Tenchu Z, there are just so many flaws with it.

Though Thief was an excellent series as well.

Splinter Cell : Chaos Theory was my favorite of that series (haven't played Double Agent on a next gen system)

What is it with all these threads popping up under the Genre War confusion? I've seen at least ten threads, that would have been locked long time ago since Genre Wars started ..

i agree about tenchu, the series was brilliant at first, and despite lapses in effort on the recent games, the early games are still fun to play.
i still love metal gear solid, despite how crap the guards are at actually detecting snake.

Numero Uno: Sly Cooper 1 thru 3! Love those games! Interesting characters and stories, and the gameplay is always top-notch!

No. 2: Metal Gear Solid - also a great game, with the only drawback being this one crappy mission where you have to go all the way back to the previous building(now more heavily gaurded), get the sniper rifle, and come back in one peice, all before your wounded girlfriend dies.

#3: Syphon Filter: Logan's Shadow and SF: Dark Mirror - both great, if not interchangeable games.

Haven't played any others, to be honest.

I'm going to have to say the MGS series, simply because they introduced me to the genre, and I think they have one of, if not the best storylines I've ever seen in a game.

However, I do love the Splinter Cell series because they provide a more realistic and tense experience. Also, the Sly Cooper games are just a hell of a lot of fun. Sly 2 was the best though.

Assassin's Creed is awesome.

As far as MMO's, an assassin rogue in DDO is pretty frickin sweet at higher levels in the game. Can solo missions in stealth mode and do instant death strikes from the shadows. Or a sneaky built caster.

The cooper games were my favorite. It filled my comical old-beat'em-up want too. I love the sounds when you hit enemies. Plus it was just enough sneaking around to put me on the edge of my seat. it wasn't the end of the world went you were found, it just made it harder.

Assassin's Creed and Thief 2 jump out at me just because they're both so awesome. i liked Splinter Cell, but not as much, although i did love doing co-op with my friend...when he wasn't running around shooting everything. lightbulbs, switches, armed guards way too far away, the floor of an air duct, you name it.

Yeah, Chaos Theory is great. Don't even bother with Double Agent though.

Oblivion and Fallout 3. Not made for stealth players, but the stealth in both games is really fun. Especially being a thief in Oblivion.
