Phoenix Wright is a good one.
Altair from Assassin's Creed.

How could I forget Captain Price from Call of Duty series. Think about it. In CoD1, he was a guide to your life in Europe. In CoD2, he was the hard-hitting leader on the battlefield. In 4, he was the House-esque character who always hated you, except he liked you a bit.

I have to go with HK-47, the single best-written character I have ever seen in a movie, book, or game.

Runner-up has to be Andrew Ryan. Having read Ayn Rand's work and being fond of her philosophies myself, it was cool on a level I can't describe to see them come to life in a video game.

Durandal, the rampant AI you work for in the Marathon series. (See userpic.) "If things aren't working around here, it's because I'm laughing too hard." "It seems that BoBs aren't lava-proof." "You know the guy; angry AI, works for the Pfhor, name rhymes with 'psycho'..."

There's been lots of strong personalities in games, but I have to say that it's Durandal I rank as the very best.

Where the heck is Mina from LoZ:TP??? She is selfish, sarcastic, smart, clever and unlike any orther companion in any zeldagame ever before: POWERFUL.

Also I would like to vote for Alyx Vance and Dr. Magnusson.

Ps. "Mother" from PREY, just to name a bad guy...

i would say travis touchdown from no more heroes. Despite being at times a very repellent human being (well he is meant to represent a stereotypical gamer) he has so some of the best lines I've heard in a while, hell his entrance to the game is brilliant. How can you not love a guy whos first word, upon dispatching two henchmen in a very cool way is 'fuckheads!.

As you can tell, i love No More Heroes :)

Just list all of the protagonists from any game that scored 4/5 stars on IGN in the past 4 years and it makes this thread obsolete.

Heeey. There's a reason for naming Phoenix Wright.

Gumshoe: I know everything that happens under me! If someone so much as scratches their--
Phoenix: I REALLY don't need to know that much!

"Words cannot describe how screwed I am..."
"Proof-shmoof! Always with the proof-oh, wait, I do need proof, don't I."

Sorry. I just like to throw those out randomly.

Currently, I'm a bit tied into knots over Dr. Steinman, who I liked very much. McDonagh's first audiodiary had me laughing; never before had I heard 'cold as a witch's tit' from anyone other than my father, and he introduced me to the wonderful phrase, 'I don't give a toss if you piss or go fishing', which I vow to use more often.
GLaDOS should go unsaid, but, what the hell, allow me to say it anyway.
I have an intense desire to push the G-Man down some steps. No, down LOTS of steps.

Any of the NPCs from Timesplitters: Future Perfect. They were awsome, for those unfamiliar with the game, I'll name a couple, Harry Tipper- a 60s spy, A robot whose name I can't remember- who I found hilarious and Nigel- an English adventurer during WWII.

Neco Arc. A minature robot from a distant planet who looks conspicuously like a main character with kitty ears, and is trying to take over the world. Hilarious when paired with Mecha-Hisui.
