Oblivion. It has so many ideas that one would think would work for an RPG but actually don't work at all (see level scaling). I mean there are worse games but generally they're for reasons that are out of a developer's hands.
Oblivion as one of the top worst games ever? Nah. Oblivion is pretty good minus the level scaling.

My vote would go to Planetside. Developers can learn from SOE that completely ignoring the community does not a good game make.

2: Billy the Wizard: Rocket broom stick raceing. Controls made me want to blow my head in.... The castle is an obvious rip off of harry potters hog warts. Terrible levels. Horrible camra angles.

Yeah, subsistence is a ***** to find. People seem to be selling it upwards of triple digits its so rare.
Really now?

...

I shall have to keep that in mind.

OP: I think developers could learn a lot of what not to do fighting game-wise from much of the Mortal Kombat series. Luckily, it seems Netherrealm Studios has done just that if this demo is any example.

Playing really bad games isn't that good way to learn. For example, Big Rigs is one of the worst games ever, but only thing you'll learn from it is that bugs are bad.

You'd learn more by playing games which could have been much better, but missed their potential. For example, Oblivion and Crysis.

Too Human teaches us the important lesson to never give control of melee attacks to the right analog stick.

Wet for a good example of what not to do for boss fights, God of War II and III or BioShock 2 for examples of sequels that shouldn't exist, Bayonetta or Metal Gear Solid 4 for example of bad cutscene-to-gameplay ratio, Disney's Turok for an example of what not to do ever in first person shooters, Killzone 3 for why you shouldn't abuse stupid gimmicks just because they look or sound cool, and The Orange Box to play in-between so that the long procession of bad games doesn't lead to you shooting up your office.

Not a good idea. You need context for why you're putting yourself through the torture in the first place. There are plenty of modern games you can use as bad examples of SOMETHING as opposed to crappy games from the past that were examples of what we did when the very idea of interactive videos were considered a new and exciting gimmick.

Nintendo can look at New Super Mario Bros. on the Wii for a 'How NOT to Make a Mario Game'. We've come this far to see Gifs of Mario running around at appallingly low resolution and multiplayer consists of bumping into eachother and presenting an uncooperative environment with a button that kills you?

Modern Warfare 2 is a great example of balance issues ruining an entire game experience. Developers, TEST YOUR MULTIPLAYER THOROUGHLY. There is nothing worse than cheap bullshit tactics ruining an otherwise great multiplayer game.

First off ET is NOT or ever will be the worst game or even a bad design for a Atari 2600 game.

It was the most popular game during the 80's videogame market crash.
It had more screens than most the game, brain dead simple mechanics and a step by step instruction on how to play and win the game in it's book.

The shovelware a year to up to ET's release caused the crash, not the game itself.

Also it was the last game where retailers would "take back" a video game and refund full money breaking another nasty 80's habit of buy game, take home play for a day or two, see all there is to see, bring back and complain didn't work, repeat.

The so called worst games are basiclly sheep Bahhhhing at one guys opinion and cut and pasting to their own website. Most who claim 2600 games to be bad never even grew up in the 2600 days and knew what the heck to even base them off of.

You want a real example?
2600 Strawberry short cake mix and max
River rafter
Any of the sword quest games (only playable with a comic book)
Chase the chuck wagon.
NES Total recall is a very good all in one package of what is BAD in games.

Custer's revenge as a "worse game" wouldn't really cut it, as it would be like saying "Borat" was the worst "serious movie"

It was a joke, on the saddles of tasteless porn, and about as basically mind numbing as most 2600 games could be.
Why you never should parody a comedy...it's already a joke.

Now Superman 64... that game is it's own little slice of hell. Know what makes a good game? Time limits...time limits and continues like the kid playing it is in a arcade give ya a quarter every time they fail...oh wait it was a console game. Ahh well keep it that hard anyway.

Title says it all really. What are some of the best examples out there of what NOT to do.

I've already played ET (Yes, the actual ET) and I'm looking to learn more.

So, what do you suggest?
Not one game, but MOST games
Regenerating health is only good for two games, halo and roleplaying games.
Halo makes sense because shields can recharge
Roleplaying games would be horribly hard without this most of the time

Im sorry but i cant help but laugh when some idiot says "OMG COD IS REALISTIC" as he ducks behind a rock and magically heals the hole in his chest

You have to have game mechanics that work.

Ninjabread Man.
Quantum Theory.

Those games have mechanics that fail half the time you attempt them.

Ultima IX.

Angry Dragon Age fans who want to see what it *actually* looks like when a beloved franchise is violated should look into this game.
I liked Ultima IX. Yes, it had issues, and yes, it wasn't done when it was released, and yes, it only vaguely resembles earlier games in the series.

But it's better than Ultima VIII.

turning point (console version at least) is a good example of how bad controls can destroy all immersion in a game.

I felt that Modern Warfare 2 was a bit rubbish, especially the campaign. The game led the player way too much.

Sonic the Hedgehog (2006) Yeah, SEGA, don't ever do that again... oh wait, Sonic 4, herp derp. (You want to know why I said that? PM me. I don't want to go off topic.)

I also made this rant on a game I don't want to be made.

Developers, if you've had a series that's been dead for 10 years without announcing a sequel, then don't make it. DNF doesn't count since it's just been in development hell.
