Call of Duty is the number one lesson all developers learn from.

If it's hyped enough, it sells plenty. If it sucks? Well they payed for it anyways.

Too Human teaches us the important lesson to never give control of melee attacks to the right analog stick.
Weirdly enough, it was excellent in Smash Bros Melee. Probably was the 2D gameplay that did not necessitate complex movement and cameras.

There is only so much that can be learned from a rushed out piece of garbage everyone can ignore. There's significantly more to learn from a game that had so much potential and squandered it.
Half Life 2 (And episodes)
Call Of Duty.
Pokeymanns.
Metal Gear.
World of Warcrack.

rather than list terrible games (superman64, Et, etc) I think a good thing to note is games that just fall short of their potential, or opt to leave out elements that take away from their genre.

For example (equips +2 Flame Shield), in FFX, with no overworld map, the exploration and free roaming elements of RPG's that many people enjoy was completely removed. The game became extremely linear. Not to mention I friggin hate that game.
Another less biased example: In The Conduit for Wii, they don't have LOCAL multiplayer support. Isn't that the point of the Wii? To have friends over? Wasn't their motto "Wii would like to play?". Completely defeats the purpose of a multiplayer focused game to remove the ability to play with friends unless each person owns a copy, and a console.

Bad examples are often the best learning sources. So no game is bad to learn from. It is bad to copy from and not improve or attempt to learn from them.

I think there is something to learn from QWOP.
Granted, it's not a bad game, but you can learn a lot from it.

Nintendo can look at New Super Mario Bros. on the Wii for a 'How NOT to Make a Mario Game'. We've come this far to see Gifs of Mario running around at appallingly low resolution and multiplayer consists of bumping into eachother and presenting an uncooperative environment with a button that kills you?

... I thought those were good things.... Well, I had a lot of fun with those mechanics.

I do like the idea of not just trash games, but games that could have been good if not for X to learn from.

You guys have definatly made a really nice list of games! Lots to learn! PFt, who needs college, I have the interwebs! :D
