Topics with 500 replies...

I have a habit of looking at the amount of replies that a thread has received before I'll even consider looking at it.

On the one hand, if a topic has a lot of replies, theres a likelihood that there's interesting subject matter and lots of people have things to say about the original post.

On the other hand, if theres a ton of replies, the likelihood that you'll actually get to have a useful discussion rather than getting lost in a sea of trolls is truly minute.

On that basis, I have a habit of replying to posts that have 20 something replies, but not much more than that. Just wondering if anyone else is on the same wavelength?

I like smaller threads so i can have an input early on. If it gets longer than 2 or 3 pages, i usually dont read any further.

It's been working for me. I do read the huge threads though, they tend to have the most interesting discussion.

Same on both points, I make an exception when I'm addressing an individual though. But other than that I'll rarely post in large thread.

I look at threads based on title. It might be a good issue but a crap title and I'll probably give it a miss. I also don't do "serious" threads. I just can't do more religious/life/death/relationship threads, I get so upset with seeing people raging/arguing all the time and can't be bothered joining in.

Now, see, if a thread has around 50-75 replies, I'll read the OP, and then skim over the rest of the posts, looking at things like quote trees and larger posts (by which I mean longer than two or three lines long). If I can't get a general idea of what's been said in regards to the OP or not by doing that, I'll do one of two things. If the topic is genuinely interesting, I'll take the time to read each post in its entirety, then if I have anything new to add to the conversation I'l make a reply. If I don't find the topic to be particularly interesting, I'll move on to another topic.

I will admit, I have something of a bias towards smaller threads, around 15-25 replies. I'll be more likely to answer those than larger more popular threads, because the likelihood that someone has already said what I want to say is so high. However, you then get threads with over 1000 replies (rarely, but it happens) in which the topic tends to alter itself so much over the course of posting that you really only need to read the OP, the first page of posts, and the last couple pages to get an idea of what the topic is. It's an odd conundrum, I'll give you that. I think the general consensus is that the smaller a thread, the more likely people are to post in it. Which would imply that as a thread gets posted in, the likelihood that it will continue to get posted in diminishes exponentially.

Also, this isn't directed just to you, [user]Ghostkai[/user], but to everyone that quotes and says "This." or "Quote for truth": Please stop it. At least do what [user]Daye.04[/user] does and add a little bit to the end to make sure your post actually adds something to the conversation. Saying "This." and nothing else just looks like you're trying to add another post to your post count. If what you want to be said has already been said in a way you can't add anything to, then don't add "This." to the end of it.

I always go for the threads that haven't hit the two page mark yet, unless it's a very interesting subject, in which case I will post on something that has 2 or 3 pages. If it's anything bigger than that I won't post.

Joking, joking. I do agree with you though. If someone just says "this" after quoting someone, and they're new here, it seems as if they're just doing it for the badges.

The number of posts on a thread makes no difference to me whatsoever, only the topic and whether I feel it will be interesting to read what others have to say, or whether I feel I can make an original contribution to it.

Agreed - I don't think I ever really take the post count into consideration, but prefer to post on subjects which I feel could be interesting, and then I look through the posts to see if it's actually going anywhere, whether it's been completely de-railed or if my contribution will join the sea of other people trying to post something constructive.

Derailment. We derailed an introduction thread yesterday to be about Max hiding bodies under the stairs etc. It had 7 pages of replies and got the new guy a badge.

I hate to be that guy who responds to the OP without reading the thread and there seems to be a certain length at which you can't possibly read the whole thread before it has either doubled in size so you never reach the end or will already have fallen down in the index/been locked before one can post. Three pages is probably my limit for this site at least.

I have this strange aversion to replying to threads with 3 or more pages of responses merely because someone's already said something I would say. Or I'll say something useful and the next 10 trolls who are argumentative will totally ignore it because it breaks their argument.

Depends how interesting the topic is. If it's something I'm only slightly interested in I will be put off by a large reply count, if it's something interesting enough I'll read it, and if it's really interesting I'll post regardless of the amount of replies. As for threads with less replies, it's up to the mood I'm in.
