Depends on the topic, tbh. If it's something I feel strongly about I'll put my two cents in, no matter how long the topic. Conversely, if it's super easy to answer, and I can type it up quick, I'll respond too.

But otherwise, I tend to be a bit wary of topics with more than a hundred replies, and I'll often open and close and open and close before replying, if at all.

We derailed an introduction thread yesterday to be about Max hiding bodies under the stairs etc. It had 7 pages of replies and got the new guy a badge.
Wtf! I missed that...damn I have to look for it.

On topic

Alot of the time either a topic is really intresting or it just has 300 people saying "this".
This.
Bananas?

Edit- This is a completely useless post for example

I prefer to look at small threads where my thoughts haven't already been posted by a dozen other individuals.
This.

No none can be bothered reading further than three pages anyway, so what's the point?

If I see a thread with hundreds of replies, I'll only read them all if I'm really interested in the subject. I'll post in any subject that I'm interested in. Sometimes I'll type a few sentences and think, "hang on, I don't really care" and backspace and move on

Derailment. We derailed an introduction thread yesterday to be about Max hiding bodies under the stairs etc. It had 7 pages of replies and got the new guy a badge.
Yeh that was fun. How did the raccon get involved again? I can't remember. I got lost in the tide after page one, good times were had.

Ahh that's right, I had to chase the little sucker but I got eventually. Those badgers were Coldwarkid's, killer badgers apparently.

i look at the title to see if it's something that interests me, then the number of posts. if there are loads of posts i probably won't post unless it's something that really interests me.

Yeah, I think pretty much everything has been said. This topic is probably running as long as it should before everything has been said.

Thanks all for your input.

PS - I want a badge, too! :p

Same on both points, I make an exception when I'm addressing an individual though. But other than that I'll rarely post in large thread.
Almost this. It depends. I have a set of rules I follow:
For me to post a respond to someone that hasn't been posted allready, it has to be less than four pages. And even then is rare.
If I am to post in threads between 5-10 pages, I have to respond to at least three or four people. And even then, it's preferably that I have some own to add.
10-20. No ... No. Then it has to be a really great discussion, and what I have to contribute with has to be nearly sensentional.
Also. I play on some of the forum games. I try not to. But there's only so much a man can keep himself from.

However, you then get threads with over 1000 replies (rarely, but it happens) in which the topic tends to alter itself so much over the course of posting that you really only need to read the OP, the first page of posts, and the last couple pages to get an idea of what the topic is. It's an odd conundrum, I'll give you that. I think the general consensus is that the smaller a thread, the more likely people are to post in it. Which would imply that as a thread gets posted in, the likelihood that it will continue to get posted in diminishes exponentially.
I have the over thousand replies badge ... And it's a forum game ... I'm so ashamed =(

But I do agree on the last part of your post, though. It's completely useless. And even if it just takes up one posts spot: When ther'e is like 10-15 "this"es, it is quite a bit of annoyance

Okay. I get why you said "/thread" at this point. But when people take a topic, and add something funny or the likes. And then write "/thread". Why oh why are they doing that? It makes no sense. If it were to be funny. Then no. It's not funny the five-hundred-time we see it. everyone is doing it. You're not special.
If it is to add a remark that what you just said is "the winner of the thread". Fine. Say that instead. Say "winner of the thread". Something like that, just not "/thread". It's so ridiculous. The thread doesn't end before it's locked, okay?
Oh, and don't worry, PizzaDentis[sup]What an odd name[/sup]. It's not pointed at you. I just had to vent it.

this, captian this is why I dislike the god damn worshiping of Max. This is why I don't like it that he runs around having fun derailing threads. This is why I'm doing all in my power to lessen his fanbase. This is why I'm not one of them.

See? Not only does he derail threads himself. But his damn fanbase does it in his honor! If you want to talk about how Max hides bodies, talk about it in "hiding bodies" thread. Don't derail a damn threads. One of the things I hate when reading an interesting thread, is all the damn derailing. It ruins all of it. It makes me read in vain. This is why I don't love Max like the reast of you

It's a simple way of saying "they said exactly what I was going to say". Chill out, it's widely done on many, MANY forums.
So? This isn't "many, MANY forums". This is The Escapist. Unlike 4Chan, we have standars.
When you're posting, it's to contribute. You're not really contributing by saying "What I want to say has allready been said". If it has allready been said, then follow the discussion of you opinion. Then. If there is something you can add later in that discussion, then you have a reason to add something. Not before. It's just so useless. We know that if one says something, it's bound to be multiple people that agree. We don't need confirmation

Yea, it came about from the standard "Welcome to the Escapist. We hope you enjoy your stay, pleas eignore the body under the stairs." greeting. It did get rather out of hand.

Yes. You see what I mean now? New members aren't interested in what the fuck Max does. They want to introduce themselves, and this thread is were they're supposed to. No wonder they make new threads, when they're being drowned with posts about Max personal life.

Listen. This is really easy to fix. And I hope everyone wants to fix this, since derailing is not good in any way. It dstroys the entire purpose of the thread.

This is how to fix it. One, two, three, maybe even four posts derailing - fine. anything more than that. Continue it on PMs. PM is your friend. If what you are talking about is so interesting, you have to continue - do so in PMs. It's not harder than that. You people get to continue your facinating conversation, and the thread get to continue it's purpose. Please take this into consideration. I'm begging you
