Um, what.

How to Train Your Dragon was amazing. Sure Planet 51 sucked but we get shitty animated movies every year along with amazing ones. I don't see a sudden general decline in quality, personally.

And yes, Toy Story 3 was freakin' awesome.

Most of what needed to be said has already been said. Most animated movies produced lately have been geared toward little kids and ONLY little kids.

Pixar is the exception. In my opinion, all of their movies have been good (except cars, which I kind of found average). Still, their track record is almost perfect.

aw snap! and so true! Also what would be the worst pixar movie?

on topic: Dreamworks just seems to be trying to have another success like Sherk. Yet they just don't have the right stuff for it.
I usually have no urge to go and see movies made by Dreamworks unless when i am watching the kids of the cottage and (me being dumb) asking what they want to do. i have seen some abysmal movies but i usually stick through to the end but some just make me want to put a bullet to my head.

Go look up Studio Ghibli, basically everything they make is gold, I swear.

My two top movies of all time (Animated or not) are made by them.

Actually, Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs was made by Sony. They also made Open Season and Surf's Up.

OT: Yeah, Animated Films have their ups and downs. Pixar/Disney and Dreamworks are basically the top contenders, but Pixar/Disney just has so many better films then Dreamworks. Plus Disney owns the American Release of Ghibli Films (Spirited Away, Howls Moving Castle, all technically owned by Disney). I am very certain Pixar did not intend to make a 3rd right now when they made like the second one. Especially since Disny/Pixar almost had a falling out when Eisner was still in charge.

Cars. Definitely Cars. It's the slowest, least exciting movie in Pixar's lineup. But even still, it's a damn fine movie.

I have a huge love for 2D animation, and grew up on Disney movies so I suppose you can say anything that Disney has done recently is a huge disappointment for me (save for Princess and the frog). Pixar is great, but since everything is computer animated now I wonder if hand drawn animation will ever become popular for the big screen again. Worked for the 3D gimmick.

Pretty much anything except Pixar movies and old Disney Animated films like Lion King.

Nowadays its complete crap. Before they actually had some thought and depth to them. Now... I just don't know.

Sure there are some genuinely good animated movies that come out every now and then, but those are few and far between.
may i add studio ghibli to the list of people who do it well?
If memory serves, they did Princess Mononoke and Spirited Away.

In which case hell yes.
They did Ponyo as well and a few others.

The basic gist of it is this. Pixar, as you may know, is a small company in which Disney has exclusive rights to distribute. They chose this instead of going solo in order to keep the company as it was; a bunch of passionate artists making movies. Other companies rely on analysts, advertisers, and Suits to become the Corporations and Distributers they are today; and that sometimes get's in the way of making a good movie.

While at Disney, Sony, or Dreamworks there's some guy in a suit saying "oh, this is really popular right now," "This idea worked for them, I think we can do it better," "You want to get kids to come, because as kids their parent's will ether be dragged in to seeing it as well or take their kids. That'll add to the BoxOffice Gross." Or, worst of all, "Adults don't want to see cartoons! Make it more Child Friendly" or "Some parents will get angry if we traumatize their kid with this, best take it out just to be safe."

At Pixar, it's more of the Director wants to tell this story while the artists on the floor practically run their creative wells dry coming up with ways to make it work.

Which is why the other companies don't do as well, because when the analyst see's the new Pixar movie and says "I think I figured out what makes Pixar movies good! It's the 3D/FamilyKid-Friendly Story/Toyetic Characters!" Instead of realizing it's just the Artist telling their story without worrying about who'll enjoy it or not. Not to say they don't hold anything back, they're still adults, they just have their Creativity and Inner-Child well intact.

It certainly wasn't planned for Toy Story to finish the Trilogy now though, because technically speaking Pixar didn't plan on making Toy Story 2. Disney wanted them to make the sequel and even planned to release them themselves. But as I said, the movies were the children of the Artists and they didn't want to see them ruined by a poorly rushed straight to video sequel.

So yeah, Pixar and Studio Ghibli are defiantly the biggest and best animation studios I can think of right now. It's because they're passionate about the art. I can't say if Studio Ghibli is like Pixar in the sense of business, but at least they care enough to keep Traditional 2D animation alive.

From what I hear, many consider "A Bug's Life" Their worst movie, seeing as it had the lowest opening weekend and lowest Total US Gross in the Boxoffice.

I actually really enjoyed Kung Fu Panda. I can't stand Shrek anymore...any of them. They haven't aged well and the jokes are really grating. Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs was great as well. Any others from Dreamworks...no thanks.

Kung Fu panda was good, How to Train Your Dragon was actually one of my favorite movies from this year (yeah, yeah, laugh at the 19 year old Dragon fan), and I'm actually quite excited to see Despicable Me...looks like a good blend of kiddy/adult humor.

Shrek 1 and 2 were pretty cool, 3 was abysmal and I haven't seen 4.
Just about every animated movie released in the past five years have been terrible, with the exception of Pixar movies.

In 50 years people will watch several Pixar films, I have no doubt. Good story telling never loses its appeal. Dreamworks...I'd be surprised if one survives test of time.

As a general rule, Pixar can appeal to an impressively broad age demographic. Wall-E, Toy story and UP show this. They do on occasion make crap, but on the whole not so bad. The film with the food falling out the sky, not quite on par with the former films, but not THAT bad.
You're talking about Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs right? Pixar didn't make that.

I haven't watched any animated films recently, other than toy story 3, because they didn't interest me at all. Everything just seemed to be too geared to children.

Also, according to IGN, the greatest animated film of all time is Beauty and the Beast, followed by Wall-E, The Incredibles, and Toy story 2, as found in this list [http://movies.ign.com/articles/650/650717p1.html]. I can see where they're coming from, but just about every Pixar movie reigns supreme in my books.
