You know there are characters that you love in games, characters that you hate even the sight of them. Then....there are those that you kinda feel sorry considering the situation they are in. Like for example....Axel from the Twisted Metal series. Holy frick, I feel bad for this guy. His life is just a never-ending pit of pain and suffering. First his horrible dad traps him into a contraption he can never escape, then he tries to escape, and [spoiler/]rips his arms and legs off in the process.[/spoiler] Then when he finally thinks he is free and ready to end his suffering once and for all, life just has to come in to say "Hey Axel, think you are free? NOPE!!" and messes him up again!! Wow, I feel bad for him. So escapists, which character in video games do you feel bad for?

As a more recent example, your male/female neighbor in Pokemon X/Y.

Throughout the course of the playthrough, your neighbor is constantly attempting to usurp you at every battle encounter, and more often than not, you wipe the floor with them. This happens at least 4-5 times over the course of the game, and each time I just felt awful about it. They are so determined, so ready to beat you and finally prove themselves a worthy trainer that they are willing to continuously battle you to prove themselves as your rival.

...and then you beat them into the dust.

Of course, I am speaking in terms of my neighbor being a girl, as I have no idea if the situations play out any differently for a female player character and the male neighbor. Anybody who does know this feel free to fill me in.

However yeah, the neighbor in X/Y is the one I feel sorry for the most, definitely.

The character I feel sorry for is also named Axel, but from Disgaea. He's such a buttmonkey I feel sorry for him, it's like the entire world is out to get him and he can't catch a break.

As I have played both genders on both X & Y and have found differences, I can tell you that the rival situation is the same regardless of what you're playing as. I do agree that I feel more sorry when I beat Serena as my boy avatar than when I beat Calem as my girl avatar.

OT: I felt sorry for another Axel, one of Kingdom Hearts fame, but he got better. Now I reserve all my feels for the protagonists of the Birth by Sleep entry of the series, especially since most, if not all, of the tragedies in that game could've been avoided had they simply communicated with each other.

Teepo from Tales of xilia.

After we discover that Teepo is just doll that boost the users mana lobe and is basically just Elizes subconcious talking , i couldn't help but feel bad for him and the ending cinematic when Eliz puts him away in a chest . I understand that she has grown up and no longer requires Teepo at her side , but after learning what he really was, he became an infinitely better character . That duo has to now be my favorite videogame characters.

Tidus was the first character that came to mind
Then Zack Fair
Then Angeal Hewley
Then Tellah

Play the respective final fantasy games until the end and you will see... FF can be bleak at times.

Artorias from Dark Souls.

Knight Solaire from Dark Souls.

Queelag's Sister from Dark Souls.

Rhea of Thorolund from Dark Souls.

Dark Sun Gwyndolin from Dark Souls...

I think you see what I'm getting at here. Tragic, miserable game. Seems like every NPC has a sad tale to tell.

The 4 fire adept antagonists in the games; all they were trying to do was save their home village.

Personally I fucking hated Tidus. The jerk made me sick to my ass. :p
Don't know who Zack Fair is (I abandoned the FF series after 10, I take it he was in one of the ones after that)
Don't know who Angeal is (See the above parenthesis)
Tellah: I'll agree with you on this one. Watches his daughter die right in front of his very eyes, finally meets the man he swore revenge against only to find that even sacrificing himself by casting the most powerful spell in existence, it still wasn't enough to get his revenge.

Yang is also right up there with Tellah, though to be fair he doesn't actually die.
Same with Cid, Palom, and Poram.

And moving on to yet another great FF game, let's head on over to FF6!
Damn near every character in this game has some sort of sob story attached to them.

Cyan: Watches his entire kingdom succumb to poisoned water and is the only survivor. Constantly tormented/haunted due to his guilt of letting his wife and child die.

Terra: The daughter of a human and an esper, she can't really fit into either world. The espers reject her as a cursed child that should have never been born, the humans see her as some freakish magic user. Lacking any real connections or purpose, it seems that everyone she encounters just wants to use her in one way or another.

Locke: Watches his one true love fall from a cliff and end up in a coma due to bringing her along on a treasure hunting adventure. Due to this, her family completely rejects him and tells him to keep away, so he dedicates himself to finding a way to bring her back, only to find that she's gone forever.

Shadow: Pretty sure he feels guilt-ridden over getting his best friend killed. I think his best friend was Relm's father...or maybe Shadow is, himself, Relm's father...can't really remember, and I don't think it's ever definitively made clear (at least not in the SNES version)

Gau: His mother died giving birth to him, causing his father to go crazy and swear that the child was some kind of monster. As such, he abandons Gau out in the wild where he is essentially raised by monsters. In a sequence that I've only gotten to see once (despite my best efforts to repeat it) you can actually clean Gau up, put him in a very nice looking outfit, and take him to meet his father again...who promptly denies ever having a son and refuses to accept him.

Celes: Like Terra, she never really had a family. And if you let Cid die, you get to see an absolutely heart-wrenching scene of her succumbing to despair and trying to kill herself by throwing herself off a cliff.

A few of the others as well, but that's enough for now. :p

NPC villagers in any RPG we just randomly come in to their homes smash their pottery and steal their stuff and do mean things to them like stick buckets on their heads

Jarl Balgruf in Skyrim when I play for the Stormcloaks. Balgruf was always fair and wasn't really intending to side with anyone besides his people and you kick his ass and steal his throne anyway. I don't feel bad when I kill Ulfric when I play for the Imperials, though I do miss his sexy voice when he's gone.

Joel and Ellie and Tess from The Last of Us. Well, really, most people from that game since every one of them has some kind of horrible sadness looming over them all the time. No point in going into each individual since it'd be a whole bunch of spoilers.

Tidus from Final Fantasy X. All he wants is to be happy and lighthearted and love his lady but damn, has he got too much going against him.

Seymour from Final Fantasy X. Messed up childhood, messed up everything. I couldn't help but feel bad for him.

Murphy from Silent Hill: Downpour because of his entire backstory.

Lucas and Claus from Mother 3 because of absolutely every single possible thing ever going wrong for both of them.

Everyone besides Link in The Legend of Zelda: Link's Awakening because of...well, it would be a spoiler to say.

GAAAAAAAAAAAAAH! Why did the call the game prepare to die? Prepare to cry more like.

Siegmeyer, died trying to prove he wasn't worthless.

Oscar, died before his adventure even began.

The Crestfallen Warrior, died the second he started to live again.

Christ, even PINWHEEL has a sad story behind them. Those masks he wears? Those of the members of his family he tried to bring back to life! UNSUCCESSFULLY! It's what turned him into whatever the hell he is now!

The bottom line being of course the fact even his impoverished family refuses to acknowledge him. That seemed like a bit too much. I know it's supposed to be funny buy come on, give the guy a break.

Oh god, so many! Well, number would probably be Ryoji from Persona 3.
That poor guy. He's just your average funny and charming dude, who wants nothing more than to hang out with his friends and enjoy his newfound life. But no, not gonna happen. Ryoji is destined to become Nyx Avatar and bring about the end of the world as we know it. And he knows that literally can't do anything about it! He tries his best to ease his friends' pain, but alas. And once he becomes Nyx Avatar, holy shit did I feel bad fighting him. Here's a creature whose sole purpose is to kill you. And yet, he doesn't mock you, he doesn't taunt you... he inspires you. The final boss inspires you in the heat of a battle! How amazing is that?!

Mine number two is probably Lukav from Front Mission 3.
I don't feel as bad for him as I do for Ryoji, mainly because Lukav is kind of an asshole, but still, Lukav is a tragic character. He was genetically engineered to become superior human and for his whole life people were telling him that. So now you're all surprised that one day he actually believed that?!

Every character's story arc got to me in Silent Hill 2, though James and Angela deserve special mention.

Also, Faith. See the end of Dreamfall: The Longest Journey.
