Ok mate, you being so pissed of at them is kind of letting them win you know. If this trailer excites you, WIN. If this trailer pisses you off, WIN. The only way this could be defeated is if you'r unphased by it. If this trailer bores you, LOSE.
That's a cop-out and you know it. That's the tired argument people use when they want to be allowed to do the thing that they shouldn't be doing.

"The only way to win is to let them do whatever they want and say nothing about it, because if you react, they win!" No, if we say nothing about it, they win. Because they get to put all this marketing up all over the place. Their "side" is being heard, and so should the dissent.
hmm. I, yeah, um, yeah. Ok your right I'm wrong. I'm usually not like that. I guess I just said that because I like Duke. If I opposed Duke I would have come up with something smarter but I was being a douche hoping you'd stop. Whatever, I can't be bothered with this discussion, I'm just gonna keep out of it.

"Hurr durr duke nukem is sexist"
You mean if strippers act like strippers then the game is sexist?
Thats like saying if a black person walks like a human then it is racist or if jocks do exercise then it is stereotypical.
Duke nukem was made to give the "moral guardians" the bird and so far trailers seem to work pretty great.

Duke hasn't lost his touch with the ladies.

Further proof that we don't know what's good for us... and what's not. People will buy this game specifically for the boobs-oriented male fan-service. And that's exactly what will be setting the industry back, pushing more ratings issues forward, and increasing the likelihood of regulation that could bleed the life out of game development.
Gaming is pretty much the biggest entertainment industry. This game being released is not going to harm that and there is no doubt that the original Duke Nukem games where a massive boon to the gaming industry so whos to say that this game far from hurting the industry might even help it.

I see DNF as the developers taking the piss out of modern games and the controversy they cause. They know full well that they're being sexist and are gonna stir the pot and I feel like that was the plan all along. The very idea that the game is being made is a joke in itself so the developers probably thought "Fuck it, lets make this this crudest game ever and mock every other game as we do it."

hell, if i can sneak it past my parents, it'll be for the retro gameplay and over-the-top dukeness more than anything else.
but i doubt the boobs will hurt sales though...
Doesn't that kind of prove they don't need to go so over-the-top to objectify every single woman we've seen connected to the game so far? The game should be fun enough to stand on its own.

Like I said above, it'd be like a white comedian dropping a joke that is racist toward non-whites to get the white people in the audience laughing. Yeah, half of them will, but the other half will find it appalling... and the non-white folks in the audience will be furious, and rightfully so. We turn it to racism, suddenly it's not funny... but the man-children making games like this turn it to sexism, and people give it the thumbs-up.
thats duke for you. the whole game is over the top. and besides, i think gearbox is making fun of duke more than anyone else, saying he's a two-note stereotypical white guy with good one liners that can be only appreciated in the ironic sense
Okay, but if I make "ironic" racist jokes over and over and over, does it matter that I personally don't believe the jokes to be true? No. I'm just being a rude, racist jackass. I'm using issues that are sensitive for other people to get attention for myself.
yes, thats part of the point. not all of it, but part of it
also, based on the number of other arguments you're currently having, you are taking this way too seriously

I think it's more that the game - and its marketing - doesn't need to be moronic. Most people who played the original when it came out are probably late 20s or older now, going for the 12 year old 'TITS!!!' crowd seems misplaced. I really think Duke has a lot to offer in the current FPS market (color, humor, cartoony fun, it's pretty much the anti-COD), it'd be a shame to put people off this way.

First of all, this an online trailer you'd likely never have seen unless you intentionally went to view it, so hardly constitutes "advertising".

Second of all, they aren't going for the "12 year old 'TITS!!!' crowd", they're going for those late-20 somethings who have become pretty fucking jaded by the gaming industry and miss when games had a sense of humor and the balls not to cave into angry parents. Most the trailers that have been released have all been done stressing one point; Duke is still Duke.

You need to chill the hell out and learn to not take things so seriously. EVERYTHING in Duke Nukem is over the top. It's MAKING FUN of that kind of entertainment.

Well, Dastardly hits the nail right on the head, if this were parody and satire we'd, well, have Duke Nukem pretty much be Johnny Bravo, his attempts at proving how awesome he is falling flat on their faces. Instead, we have Duke as the ultimate Gary-Stu, the very universe pandering and catering to him to give him opportunities to show how awesome he is and ~everyone~ he meets confirming he is awesome. Just like in a teenage fanfic.

*sigh* I really wish Bombshell was in the final DNF.

Must be the Seltzerberg definition of satire we're dealing with.

I don't get this? So you seriously think that George Broussard and Randy Pitchford and the entire staff of the game really feel this way about women? The game is intentionally ridiculous. EVERYONE is a Caricature. Duke is a Caricature of the Stallone/schwarzenegger type one-liner spouting action hero, and the "babes" are a caricature "bond girl" type female character who will often serve essentially no other purpose than to sleep with the hero. It's INTENTIONALLY ridiculous.

There's no sexism here at all. It's depicting women who are driven to wanton displays of sexuality by the most masculine entity ever to have existed.

This sort of boobage is shown in movies and television fairly often and nobody really makes any real issue with it.

What the hell? It's Duke Nukem, if you don't like it, don't buy it or let your children do so. Problem solved.

Hey, First Page Guy, can you edit your post to say "unironically pandering" instead of "sexist"? Because otherwise, we're just gonna have 10 more pages of non-arguments that us discerning Escapisteers typically devalue when said by anyone else.

Erm, where is it ridiculed? Where is Duke's behaviour made fun of? Everything Duke does in the game is met with positive reinforcement. And I should point out that the staff photo of 3D Realms taken on its final day before they shut down featured only men. Not a single woman has had an input in this game to make it more sensible. So yes, I do believe this is what Broussard seriously thinks about women.

It also doesn't help that in recent footage taken at Gearbox the developers were sniggering like Beavis and Butthead at their own game. It was nothing short of "Uhuhu, Duke says Master Chief's a pussy" (real class act there guys, making fun of a character who hasn't been in a video game since 2007), so yes, they themselves are showing that they fully agree with everything the game portrays. This is a game by frat boys, for frat boys.

And yes, in my opinion a good comedian doesn't laugh at his own jokes.

I'm chill. I just have a dissenting opinion, which does not equate to rage or anger. Just dissent and disagreement. Please, though, help me out: How is this "making fun" of that kind of entertainment? It's not.

DNF is making light of that kind of entertainment, not making fun of it. There is a difference between satire and revelry. This is the latter. An example of satire would be "Here's a game all about boobs. Look at how stupid this game is because it's all about boobs." This is saying "Aren't boobs great? Isn't it great that we can just fill a game with boobs and call it a day?"

To go back to my earlier example, Blazing Saddles is satire. The movie essentially says, "Here are a whole bunch of racist stereotypes. Look how stupid the people are that use them, and look how wrong they are anyway. Racist stereotypes are dumb." It makes fun of racism by making fun of racists, not by agreeing with them.

To be "making fun of sexism," this game would have to make the sexist protagonist wrong. They're not doing that. They're making him the hero, and the game's entire world centers around how awesome he is. How is that making fun of this kind of game, rather than just cashing in on it?
