I am so excited about this game. From screenshots I saw you can have a chomp as a partner, and it seems one of these caterpillar things. And Luigi is on the jacket... Crossing my fingers for a Luigi partner, or controlling Luigi in some parts of the games like we did with Peach and Bowser in the first (for Peach) and second (for both) games!
Looks like there are new mechanics during battle, too. That's pretty interesting. Honestly, this game is what makes me want the console to begin with. Any other game is a "might be nice to have" game (if I'm interested in them at all) but this one is a must have for me.
Really, really hoping for a great game here.
EDIT: almost forgot: I wonder if the green Toad from the trailer is a partner too, or just a character you're escorting or something. I've only seen the Chomp in battle screens so that's really the only confirmed partner as far as I know...

I promised myself I wouldn't buy a 3DS...but damn it all, Nintendo, you are making this so hard for me...

I mean, Mario is alone most of the time in the trailer, and the partners I've seen with him in PM3DS (chain chomp, toad) are generic. ... You're right. It's just a plain black Chomp, could be an attack for all I know, or a summons, or something. The previous games didn't have a generic Goomba but a specific, recognizable individual, and so on for each partner.Tales of Golden Sun said:
Maybe they're holding on to the partners because they want to keep it somewhat of a surprise? I hope that's what it is. The partners were a feature I really enjoyed in the 64 and Gamecube games...
Checking at pictures of combat that include the Chomp, I can't see the interface to determine if there is more than one life bar or something... so I guess you're right, at this point we can't tell.

Wait, I'm confused. Is paper mario a JRPG again? Do you play without partners or are toads your only partners? Why is it on a handheld? I thought Mario and Luigi were for handhelds and Paper Mario for consoles.

This obviously isn't a remake, since if it was, we'd be seeing the classic partners following Mario. Not to mention there are no familiar areas from the original game, and new areas that weren't in the original game seen in the trailers.Dead_Lee said:
Speaking of trailers and partners, the one thing that worries me is the lack of original partners. The only thing we've seen following Mario is a Green Toad, and he doesn't look all that different from a regular Toad. Part of the appeal from the original Paper Mario games, at least the first two, were the partner's original designs and personalities. It kind of sucks that the only thing we've seen are a Green Toad and a Chain Chomp, who don't look all that different from normal Toads and Chain Chomps.
Maybe they're just saving the partners for until closer to the release date...
Thank you Nintendo, for a second there, I thought there'd acutally be a reason to gather the money for your over-priced gimmicky bull crap. Of course now that I've seen the Paper Mario game play and see that it pales in comparison with the mighty Thousand Year Door and even the original, all my concerns are pushed aside.
The 3D will really make those 2D paper physics/visuals really pop. Can't wait to see more of this as we get closer to the release date.
