Ok, so I just finished ME1 and started playing ME2, but I couldn't transfer my save. The thing is, ME1 I got it on Steam, and ME2 is a store bought copy. Do I need to do something specific to get it to work? If anyone knows that would be great.

First and foremost: Did you do the ME save configuration when you started ME2?

edit: Namely, during the initial screen (with Thane's sexy mug in the background), -> Configure -> Mass Effect -> Save Games -> Copy Mass Effect 1 Save Games

I have the same Steam/hard copy set up you have. Have you followed the instructions correctly?

On the ME2 launcher, instead of clicking play, click configure.

On this window, click the 'save games' icon on the left hand side, then 'copy ME1 games'.

Your ME1 saves are, by default, stored in [user]/documents/bioware/mass effect/saves.

Select this folder then click ok.

Finally and most importantly, under the 'Mass Effect 2' tab at the top click 'save settings'.

Then close the configuration window, and the launcher should come up again. Then click play, and the rest is self explanatory when you start a new game. Hope that helps!

I downloaded my copy of ME1 from the internet and got my copy of ME2 on disc, and the transfer came out all right. What you want to do is this:

1) Start up the game.
2) When the little menu comes up when you launch it, click 'Configure' instead of 'Play'.
3) If you do this right, you should get a configurations window. There should be a Save Games tab on the left hand side of the window.
4) There should be a big button saying "Copy Mass Effect 1 Saves". Click on that, and it should take care of that.

It's nothing on Steam's end; you just have to copy your ME1 saves in the configurations settings.

The saves are in your documents folder. Just go to the Bioware folder, then to Mass Effect, then saves.
If you're on Windows 7, it should be here-just replace your name
C:\Users\[YOUR NAME]\Documents\BioWare\Mass Effect\Save

I think that is for when you got a hard copy, not a digital copy from steam.
No, that's were mine are as well, and I did play ME1 on Steam.

manual transfer.
copy character saves from:
C:\Users\[YOUR NAME]\Documents\BioWare\Mass Effect\Save

then go to:
C:\Users\[YOUR NAME]\Documents\BioWare\Mass Effect 2\Save

Create a folder called "ME1"

paste character saves files into there.

Wow that sounds like a terribly unintuitive way to do that. You think they would make it pop up when you start a new game.

To anyone else looking for info on this:

The configuration tool's "copy ME1 savegames" browser won't show you the savefile itself (only its directory). Just go to your "[user]\Documents\BioWare\Mass Effect\Save" folder and hit "open".

Then, as Bebus said, hit "save settings" under the "Mass Effect 2" tab and you're good to go.

It won't notify you that the savefile has been copied. If you're unsure whether it's copied or not, go to your "[user]\Documents\BioWare\Mass Effect 2\Save\ME1" - if you see a savefile (with the same name as your ME1 save) there, then it's been copied.

Happy gaming.
