Before I begin, I just want to say.
I WAS NOT AWARE OF THE USER REVIEW SECTION! I RARELY MAKE THESE TYPES OF THREADS!!
Now then for the real aleart:
SPOILER ALERT!!! Do not proceed if you don't want to know a good chunk of the story!
Being the Transformer fan that I am and I admit that I loved the first Transformers and was a bit forgiving of the second one. However this time around the story is different and my hopes were shattered like the glass of a building in a Micheal Bay movie. HA! Already digging into his ass.
God I'm evil.
Now let us delve into the movie, Transformers Dark of the Moon.
Beware my personal and harsh reviews!
First, The 3-D was excellent and well done. It wasn't too much and was brought in at the appropriate times and wasn't too excessive as if it were trying to be a gimmicky movie.....Ironic I say that about an overly paid Car Commercial Film. HA!
Well onto the movie itself. I found it quite interesting. I truly did, but It seems Micheal Bay has not learned his fucking lesson. I say this because once again, the movie focuses TOO MUCH on the humans, and by too much I mean a good 60%- 70% of the movie. While I'll admit that a good chunk of it was necessary into establishing the plot, but still found it a bit uninteresting....especially with Shia Le B!tch to come in and have to constantly scream or spazz out every 5 mins of his screen time. You think he had Turrets or ADHD or something.
The good thing about Shia Le Bouf (IDGAF if I spell it right) is that this one actually establishes his character pretty well. Going from saving the world twice and keeping it under wraps and then having to go about every day life like he just didn't experience an epic adventure with the Auto-bots. It's understandable to see him stir crazy a bit and well, I may have been nit-picking, it does seem necessary for this movie. Doesn't excuse the previous film (Revenge of the Fallen).
Here our hero is going stir-crazy because he's not out there with the auto-bots on their missions to stop the evil decepticons or forces that are correlated with them.So he moves in with his new Girlfriend, who AMAZINGLY serves a better purpose than Megan Fox did and actually has Depth.
While it may not be the depth of what entails in a 5 star movie, it's still depth that doesn't make her seem like a pretty face or damsel in distress throughout the movie (Despite the movie formula of her getting kidnapped. whooo big surprise). Anyways, the new girlfriend's name is Carly and is told all about the auto-bots and it's briefly established how she comes into Sam's life, so as not to focus too much on the romance right away. Although Ironic that the romance still continues to be as well structured as the previous two films (I.E. I risk my life fighting giant robots to save you. NOW LOVE ME!!). That formula (-_-)
Anywaaaaaays, the movie does a good job in bringing in some cheesy life lesson BS that is established at the beginning and not realized until mid-way through the movie.
So as I was saying. Sam is having trouble coping with normal life until news gets out to the Auto-Bots about the Soviets, Americans and Decepticons finding an autobot ship scrash landed on the moon that contains something very useful if the Decepticons are teaming up with a select few humans to covertly get that info.
Anyways yada yada yada we are brought about our 3 main villains. Starscream, Megatron, and SoundWave (from the Second movie).
Sadly getting screen time with these guys is like trying to find a Youtube video with comments that don't concern the like and dislike bar. Very difficult and rare. The villains do a great job at least. Especially killing a few autobots that I honestly did not see coming. So the movie finds a way to get you involved more emotionally with them more than the humans.
That's the thing though! We care more about the Auto-Bots and Decepticons going about their plans and battle strategies. I understand that human involvement is necessary, but should be kept to the minimum without losing the main plot or valuable information.
The movie COULD HAVE done that, but sadly brings about a bit useless action here and there and does make a few funny attempts at comedy to which I'll give it points. The comedy is a bit more classy than the 2nd film (Especially the giant wrecking balls as nuts for Devastator).
Howeveeeeeeer there is an unavoidable gay joke that really and I mean reeeeeally is in bad taste and was honestly a waste of the 3 mins setting up for that joke.
Now then, concerning the main plot of the story, I'm not going to give away every detail. I'll just say there are a few Plot twists that you don't expect and amazingly the love interest Carly, finds a way to be more useful than Megan Fox could ever hope to be in those movies. So kudos to her....however it's still like picking between Princess Daisy and Princess Peach. One just gets put in danger less (Megan Fox) than one and the other seems more interesting (Carly).
So the plot of the story is that there are these pillars that were in the autobot ship that can be brought together with a core pillar that when activated, serves as a giant teleportation gate that will bring about NUMEROUS decepticons and to even Merge Cybertron with Earth so as to bring about a new Chance at life for the Decepticons.....after they k!ll and enslave a good majority of the humans to work for them.
Got some serious Lovecraft Elements here.
So with the whole Dark of the Moon only serving as a minor premise to the real plot Megatron, Starscream, Soundwave and other Decepticons make their way to Chicago and completely annihilate the entire city and cut it off as a fortress so as to bring about their teleportation of Cybertron towards earth.
Since I don't want to spoil the plot twist, I'll just say that it leaves the Auto-bots in a strained relationship with the humans and a series of events follows to keep the Autobots from entering the fray of the battlefield.
*Sigh* Sadly this action here focuses TOO MUCH and I mean TOO much on the human side with a few friendly faces returning, but only to serve as a distraction or emotional stake until the Auto-bots arrive.
Onto the REAL ACTION!! WHOOHOOO This is where it gets big! This is where it gets awesome! This is where......it gets my hopes up.....drastically.
I mean that in every sense of the word. While Optimus comes in as always like a badazz whooping down on decepticons, it still feels lackluster. I felt that there could have been more to the movie than just autobots whooping up on NAMELESS Decepticons while the more memorable ones get written off like $hit! No I mean it! Soundwave and Starscream deserved more DIGNIFIED deaths. They were the biggest threat in the movie and were brought down by the most unconventional means.
Starscream of all people was a huge loss to me considering how he died without even getting involved directly with the fight against the autobots! FUCK YOU MICHEAL BAY!!
Now with two of the greatest Decepticon threats taken down by some of the most BS methods. Cept maybe a tip of my hat to Soundwave considering Optimus finished him pretty well.
*Tries not to remember Optimus being taken away from the battle by Construction lines* FUUUUUUUUUUUU!!!
But Megatron!? Ohahahahahaha I don't even want to fucking talk about him.
If you thought the second movie undermined his ability to be a badazz then you are WROOOOOOOOOOOOOONG on so many levels.
Megatron here serves almost NO PURPOSE!!! None! Other than to look good for the camera, establish that one plot twist and an even bigger plot twist at the end that you totally see coming, they might as well have posted a GIANT SIGN on him saying "I'M DOING SOMETHING UNEXPECTED AND OUT OF CHARACTER NOW!!!"
*sigh*
Seeing what happens to him brought out just a heavy sigh as I witnessed how anti-clamactic the ending was that it was almost unbearable.
The ending of it all just felt so goddamned rush that you couldn't enjoy it. I really couldn't. It's as if Micheal Bay stopped and realized
"Oh hey we can't make a 4 hour movie! Screw it and cut out a good potential 80 minutes of Robot on Robot action and we'll just stick with what we got left over. Oh and don't forget to show the American Flag towards the end when the good guys start winning again, because it's patriotism and all that good stuff!!"
Ugh. The ending was just a dissapointment and I couldn't really enjoy it, because the moment the credits hit, I'm left there in my seat holding out my hands going "Wait that's it!?!?"
Sure it has closure, but it's so rushed that you can't let it sink in. It was like a cheesy Saturday morning cartoon where the good guy makes a miraculous comeback in the last 2 mins of a 30 min program and it just ends with him making a witty remark and everyone laughing at the end. They don't let the gravity of the situation or victory set in all that much. I know Optimus is a badazz, but it'd be great for him to stop at the end and take in all what's happened.
In the end, I give the movie a 6 out of 10.
It's above average, but in all honesty the major mistakes could have been avoided.
It's great and the action scenes are well done, but it's WHO'S in them that matters and takes away the effect of a final epic fight.
All in all well done movie, I can't complain considering how I got to see the movie for free, but it's so Anti-Climactic that you feel as if you've missed out on at least an hour of potential autobot vs decepticon climax.
I recommend it and I'll let you decide whether the movie falls short or not. As for me. Well I had my hopes up only to be let down.
Sorry Optimus, but as awesome as you are, you just couldn't make up for the whole movie.
In SHORT
I got my hopes up a bit too high and was hoping that Micheal Bay would be able to redeem himself in my book with this movie. Sadly he didn't and left me a bit pissed if anything. The consolation is that at least it's 10 times better than the second movie and I honestly do recommend this movie. The Comedy is actually clever and doesn't focus on sophomoric sexual humor, the action takes up alot more of the movie than both the first and second and the Character development is spot on aside from a few new Auto-bots (Scottish Stereotypes)
