Tribes Universe Seeks Testers

Alpha testers are wanted for Tribes Universe, the revival of the classic Tribes [http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tribes_%28video_game%29] franchise as a persistent online shooter that was announced earlier this week.

Hi-Rez Studios revealed on Sunday that it had acquired the rights to the Tribes property and is bringing it back [http://www.escapistmagazine.com/news/view/104668-Tribes-Back-in-Business-As-Persistent-Shooter-MMO] to life as an MMO shooter that will include three Tribes, a fully-persistent, non-instanced world with territorial control, ground and air vehicles, and even skiing, a must-have for any real Tribes game. And even though things are still in the very early stages, Hi-Rez is inviting dedicated fans to sign up for the alpha test.

"We are very proud and humbled to be carrying the banner of the Tribes franchise," said Tribes Universe Executive Producer Stewart Chisam. "Because the game will be focused around huge battles on huge landscapes, we need a solid group of very dedicated testers that can help us from the games' earliest stages to validate the scalability and performance of the game, while also helping tune and refine gameplay."

The alpha testing period is expected to begin in early 2011 and Chisam promised that "much more information" about the game would be released over the coming months. If you're a Tribes fan and have some free time to donate to the cause, you can put your name in the hat at tribesuniverse.com [http://www.tribesuniverse.com/].

I don't think you have to be in the US that just seems to be for actually coming into the studio and playing there

So is this going to be similar to Planetside? I used to play Tribes quite a bit so I am desperately hoping that this is Planetside with Tribes controls.

Yeah that's why you have to be in the US.

I just couldn't be bothered to clarify in my original post.

I have no free time to offer. Too bad because I could be their main tester for guys with ridiculously outdated computers.

I was afraid I misread this, but it's true...

Thank you for bringing this to my attention. TIME TO ROUND UP THE TROOPS!

My dream of another Tribes has finally been realized. And I'm such a stupid fanboy of it that I actually managed to enjoy Tribes: Vengeance. Tribes 2 was still my favorite, but I have high hopes for PlayTribes and hopefully soon-to-be Tribes Universe.

Tribes was the first Online FPS I played, and I still do occasionally, never could get Tribes 2 to work, though maybe I should revisit that considering they're FTP as I understand

Signed the hell up for this!

I went down to Red Prairie Studios a few times and met Chaz and a few of the other lead developers for Global Agenda when I beta tested it for them. Was good times.

Definitely looking forward to doing that again.

This is pretty freakin awesome. Played Tribes 2 like crazy back in the day (it was also the only video game my dad ever played) and can't wait for this. Hope I get to take part in the testing!!

Hey, I liked Vengeance too and I'm not a fanboy at all. It wasn't great but, massive holes in the plot notwithstanding, it was decent.

Honestly, I actually liked the single-player. It was about as decent as most FPS plotlines get.

However, Tribes 2 had a lot more to its multiplayer. Vengeance felt like more of a UT2K4-with-jetpacks-and-skiing. Which isn't bad, like I said, I liked it. But the thing is, I played mostly Arena and CTF online, and I tried 'ball' for a while and then just ended up playing more UT2K4 instead. Tribes 2 didn't have that "similar to this other game" and I was still playing team rabbit 2 for quite a while, and at the time, wasn't many other games with modes like that out there. Hell, there still isn't...
