Trolls come in many different flavors and do what they do for as many
different reasons as there are stars in the sky.

Some are merely lonely souls screaming out for attention, a never-ending quest for acknowledgment that they exist, in the hopes that they may yet not go mad from the silence of
solitude.

Others, like Fortuny, are simply sociopaths: individuals who due to trauma and biochemical imbalances do not possess empathy or even a rudimentary concept of social norms. They do what they want, when they want, and how they want, and are unable to understand the pain they cause and are unable to form deep connections with other humans. The internet offers these trolls the chance to do what they want without the very real fear of being harmed.

Still others are fanatical crusaders for some cause who have lost touch with reality. These are people with an axe to grind who have become so blinded by rage and indignation that they have failed to realize that the axe has been grinded into a sharp stick. These zealots turn on their allies just as easily as they would a detractor, and over time they tend to lose the ability to distinguish friend from foe (or for that matter the life they had before they took up their cause).
Or... they do it because they can make otherwise rational, reasonable people say that^^^
I am many things and I have claims to many traits, dear sirrah, but being reasonable (or for that matter, completely sane) is not one of them.

Without trying to come off like an arrogant bastard, it's just odd how many misconceptions about trolls I see in this thread. Trolls troll mainly for one reason: their fun. Most serious trolls are far from stupid but are instead fairly clever people who troll to amuse themselves with the stupidity of the response they get. I don't think anybody trolls because "they are an attention whore" or something similar. Attention whores seek other, more socially accepted ways, of standing in the spotlight.
I think you're definitely right in that there are trolls who can brilliantly manipulate people's egos to piss them off for their own amusement, but I think a larger amount of trolls are probably egotistical people who just like to be infuriating assholes on the internet. From what I've seen so far (although I haven't been on the Escapist for that long) This site seems largely friendly and mostly empty of theses people, but there are the occasional jerks who sully our good name.
But of course, that's why we have the Spanish Inquisition >:)

I have to admit it, I am a troll. I go on /b/ every day and I only use my YouTube account to troll random people. I join my /b/rothers in raids and turn on them once the raid is over with an Advice Dog thread. God, I love to troll!

I troll because I, like many people, go through a lot of stress. I always watch what I say in person and I never try to offend anyone. But, once I am behind my computer screen, I am 100% anonymous. No one knows who I am. There are no consequences for what I say. I can say ANYTHING and not have to worry about what my friends or family would think. It's a way of relieving stress. It's a way of showing my true face without showing myself.

Is there anything wrong with trolling? Maybe. I have never really thought to deeply about the "victim". If they ever respond, I just give them another dose. I troll until the person finally decides that the best move is to give up. Trolling can also teach you how to handle criticism too!

By the way, remember back when 4chan raided us? Well, I did not participate in that raid. I did not go on /b/ until June 2009 (yes, I am a "newfag").

For example, would you say that someone who started making people on... I don't know, say,.. Stormfront, or the BNP website, really angry (for their own amusement) simple by pointing out how their ideas are wrong is a troll?
Depends on the motivation, I suppose.

I know -I- would be a troll for doing so.

But someone else might not be.
It's just like you said, one dudes terrorist is another dudes freedom fighter.

It shouldn't just be that everyone who says something which you disagree with is a troll, motivation is key. Purpose, to cause anger, hate, and sorrow or to cause discussion, inform others of your view. In most cases, it's the former.

There are different types of trolls and they each have different motives, and there are often cases of mistaken identity as when someone responds to flames or engages in debate they might mistakenly be identified as a troll.

I think most trolls are either insecure or attention starved.

For the insecure, trolling is often a power trip, especially when their intention is to annoy people they feel like they're in control of other people's emotions and reactions and they get some strange satisfaction out of knowing that they have the power to make other people miserable. They often make intentionally stupid arguments against anything that someone says, misrepresenting what you say and invoking ad-hominim attacks. These trolls are typically the flamers, the ones who attack others in order to provoke a response then fill their exchanges with insults and act like you're the unreasonable one if you insult them back.

For the attention starved it's often a way of becoming the center of attention, even though it's bad attention everyone is focusing on them and paying attention to them and reacting to what they say. These types of trolls are often ignored, neglected, and/or spoken over in their personal life so they desperately seek the attention they crave by provoking people. It's the only time that people ever really pay attention to them, it's sad really. They use shock jock behavior because even if everyone is disgusted by the shock jock, at least they're paying attention to him.

(read the article first as it is quite a good showing on the mindset of a troll)

Recently being reminded of the dreaded Troll_Man, I decided to go deeper looking for what makes a troll, well, tick.

We all know what a troll is, those nasty beasts who come from their computers filling the internet with hate. They tend to post racist things, such as praising Hitler or using racial slurs and such, post pictures that are disgusting, racist, or over the edge in to the abyss saved for "Fluffyanimals" (Mod edit), and the most dreaded of all, threads that just waste space and are like the above categories.

But what makes a troll? Many could say that it is something from the trolls past such as being neglected or something Freudian. But what makes it so that they descend so low? Could it be that Locke was wrong and there truly are "bad eggs" in the world? I suppose us non-trolls will never know.

For Discussion: what other ways could be made to kill those trolls before they reach a post count of what Troll_Man was able to achieve(I think it was 53 posts) besides reporting, as only a small percentage really do that, or PMing a mod, because only an even smaller percentage do that.

*a special thanks to the "An idea I had" thread for giving me the idea for the thread
Link me to a thread ol Troll_man made.

Who's this Troll_Man?
He started quite a share of racist threads. And best example of a Internet troll I've seen in a while. He got banned in what had to be an hour, but he had 50 posts by then. He even got pitures of goatse on here
Was that his V4 account? Because the first time he got up to 81. It was an epic run to be sure. I have a feeling he'll be back.

OT: i think it stems from the human need to destroy what we can't have. So no one can have it!!

There was a V4!?

Look at me, nobody knows who I am. I am powerful and invisible on the Internet.

Except I'm not. Everywhere I go and everything I do online leaves a virtual fingerprint. If somebody wants to, they can find all my personal information easily and track me down. Trolls are gambling that nobody cares enough to do these things. Someday I'd like to pay them back by finding out their personal info and making it public.

Annoy ME, will you?

As far as i know he tried 3 times the first day. He got up to 81 posts, then 15, then he only got something like 4 or 5. Then the next day, he created v4 and got at least 30 before i went to go make a sammich. I didn't catch how many posts he got up to. And idk if he made a v5 because i started playing L4D2.

Talk about a persistent troll. I saw the first 3 versions, but if what I'm hearing is true, I'm glad I didn't see V4

You know, the more you talk about trolls, the more likely you are to become a target.

Just saying.

Yeah pretty much this. He's also the only troll I've witnessed here. I've missed the others.
I dunno, I remember Insane Clown 69. His thread spanned an incredible 15 pages or so

From what I know, there are only 4 versions. Besides, trolls have had many more different accounts than just four.

I remember that thread. You couldn't actually post before another page of posts suddenly appeared, which was quite scary seeing as most of them were from about two or three users. I remember a few other trolls but I don't want to go into detail on them in case I risk getting in trouble for referring to them too much.

I tried looking him up; all his posts and threads have been deleted for obvious reasons from what I've heard (I never saw the threads).

I view trolls on three different levels. All of them go for the same goal, but different ones go for it via different actions:

[ul]
[li]First, there's your average forum troll. These people can vary in subtlety from 'obvious troll is obvious' to being a troll which can actually convince you that they mean what they say on the internet. Most these guys will ever face for their actions is a ban, yet the attention they get is few and select.[/li]

[li]Next, we have the /b/tards. These guys are a branch of trolls who prefer to troll en mass rather than on their own, and whom mainly work together with DD0$ to hack sites and rig polls, as well as various raids on social sites and discussion boards they talk on. Like the standard forum troll, these people won't experience much consequences or attention for their act with the exception of massive raids that hits national/ international awareness. It is also generally these guys who will get a meme going if one does start going.[/li]

[li]And then you have people mentioned in the article. These people are the worst trolls of them all. Generally, they have a tendancy to hack at the internet accounts of users, fake themselves for who they want to blame this all on and basically want to mess up people's lives, as well as being the most skilled at messing up said people's lives. If you have any details of yourself leaked onto the internet, it will generally be leaked via these guys. These people will almost always get the biggest attention from users, however they also have the most to lose. A lot of people would do a lot of things for Jason Fortuny's address, so he, amoungst other trolls of this status, must be careful what they have on the internet and know what's going to happen as a result of their actions.[/li]
[/ul]
