A few weeks ago there was a minor troll invasion. It was over fairly quickly but it had made one thing clear; many Escapists did not know what to do when they encountered a troll. I messaged Kuliani and asked him to update the forum guidelines to contain info on dealing with trolls. He told me if I wrote something good enough on the subject he would use that, so here it is. Enjoy!

Spoiler: Part one: What is a troll?

A troll is someone who posts simply to anger and with no intention of contributing. It can be as blatant as someone posting "Racial slur Racial slur Racial slur Racial slur Racial slur Racial slur Racial slur Racial slur Racial slur!", or as subtle as someone posting "Popular thing is dumb and the people who like it are dumb". Someone who posts an opinion you disagree with, is not a troll however.

Spoiler: Part two: Slaying the troll!

The title is something of a misnomer; there is nothing active when it comes to disposing of the trolls. I have broken it down into three easy steps.
1: Spot the troll.
2: Make sure the troll is indeed a troll.
3: Hit the report button at the bottom left of their post.
Follow these steps exactly and the banhammer shall fall from the sky slaying the beast instantly.

Do not deviate from these steps in any way. Do not post in a troll thread as the troll feeds on attention. Your post cannot make a difference and change the troll's ways no matter how clever it is. Even the sharpest rapier wit and the hottest flames cannot harm the troll, it will only give the troll the attention it desires and the satisfaction of getting a rise out of you.

But ignoring them isnt as much fun as curb stomping them into dust or using the banhammer...or a laser guided missile, or poisious troll food.

My brother is actually a real life troll... He is absolutely certain that he's always right, even after I prove him wrong he'll just resort to infantile "no, you're wrong" until I give up in disgust. Or hit him. Thank god I can get away from him in a couple of years, if I last long. Yeah, you can't ever win an argument with a troll. They refuse to admit they lost, even with facts thrown at them. Then they (not so) subtly change their argument.

Also, the smarter a person thinks he is, the easier he is to troll.

Trolls continue to exist because people simply can't understand that you simply can not win when you encounter a troll. Even this thread is making some troll, somewhere, think "MISSION ACCOMPLISHED."

Thank you, only the stupid think they can beat a troll, even if you "win", they'll come back and it'll be worse, the best way to combat that is either to ignore (which most people have a hard time doing), or roll with it (which either way it's a win-win for them and a win-lose for you).

But he's doing that by himself, without riling up any gullible forum members. It's less harmful to the community.

Mind you, I think that people are all too quick to label someone else a "troll" if they post a controversial opinion on this site. It's like labelling someone as a Nazi in a debate about Judaism, even if the discussion is about how Jewish doctrine might differ from its Christian counterpart. The person doing the labelling comes across as an idiot, and loses the respect of the more discerning forum members. And yet some people still think that it's a good way of winning an argument. This sort of thinking needs to be eradicated, because it just helps nobody.

OT: Can't agree more. I'll be Reporting And Moving On (Hey, it even has a pronounceable acronym!) a lot more in future.

We do what we can to be honest. Of course you have groups like E.C.A.P. and TSI who are here to defend the Escapist and speaking on the behalf of these groups I'd say we do a pretty good job, TSI members use IRC to nab offending posts faster than the average bear Escapist, but what else can you do? The rest is up to the mods, and the normal users of the Escapist to not feed the trolls.

Its just how E.F.M can't defend themselves against stupid DSOB's, you could get some of the IRC'er's but they all act MSMD and repeat the same stuff as other EFM verbatim.

AFAIK there hasn't been a successful EFM against a troll assault. This is not an issue with the site but with its members, if you ask me its PBCAK.

Someone who posts an opinion you disagree with, is not a troll however.

I think that this should be 'not necessarily a troll'. Some trolls have used extreme opinions in the past to gather attention for themselves by people reacting to such an opinion. Saying that we should bring Margret Thatcher back is an opinion, but I've still seen it used by trolls in the past to garner attention.

Otherwise a good post. Very entertaining to read.
