And OP (we call you OP because you are the original poster :p) I do think you kinda jumped to conclusions there with the OP of the previous thread. Sure he was pretending not to know, but it wasn't to get people angry, it was just for a joke. How funny the joke is depends upon the person, but I feign ignorance all the time in the name of humor. I mean he didn't come on saying "Why isn't it okay to kill the homeless and use them as food?" He was just trying to come off as a noob for the sake of humor.
im not sure trolling has to be to get someone angry. ahh! example: yahoo answers trolls. hilarity.

My definition of trolling is a bit different than other people's.

The way I see it, there are 3 types of trolls: the angry troll, the stupid troll, and the agreeable troll;

-The angry troll is what most people define as a troll. this is a person who will say something incredibly stupid, ignorant, and/or fallacy filled in order to get a reaction, usually an upset reaction.

-The stupid troll is a person who acts incredibly ignorant, and usually faining curiosity, in order to get a reaction from people. this reaction is usually people's attempts to answer his question or to correct him. The stupid troll isn't as easy to discover sometimes, as many people are genuinely ignorant about certain topics. (not necessarily a bad thing, as everyone is ignorant about some topics.)

-And the last is the agreeable troll. this troll is the one people rarely consider a troll, including the troll himself. An agreeable troll is a person who will bring up a topic for discussion, one which virtually everyone has a very similar and strong opinion on. These thread discussions rarely amount to anything more than people all ranting about the topic, with all very similar views. these topics might often already have been discussed in many previous threads. The difference between the agreeable troll and the angry troll is that the angry troll's goal is to get a reaction by opposing people, whereas the agreeable troll's goal is to get a reaction by saying something they know basically everyone will agree with; they're basically the same, except for whether they seek a response thru anger or thru agreement

To comment for the sole purpose to warrant a responce.
more specificly(sic) a NEGATIVE response.
I don't think it needs to be negative. For example, mentioning the finger box, or triforcing can be considered trolling, because you get people who aren't in on it to respond in a way that exposes them as such.
yeah that makes sense too. my mistake.

Something designed to produce anger in another group.

I feel this community takes it far too seriously and often defines something that is not "trolling" as such, or punishes someone who didn't take it too far and actually was pretty funny.

Trolling falls under a number of circumstances. A troll can be someone who wants to bait someone into an argument or a person who deliberately makes up facts or just acts like your standard troll.

So I was in a thread earlier, where I accused the OP of trolling. Several members of the community felt I was wrong in my accusation and suggested that I was ill-informed as to the nature of trolling. So my question to you Escapists is, what do you believe constitutes trolling?

Clear enouth?

Well with my definition of troll it does. I'm not trying to say that I'm right, you're wrong; that's just my definition. Acting stupid for humor I just consider humor. "Trolling" has a negative implication for me and since I'm all for different types of humor asking obvious questions (or giving obvious answers, which is a favorite of mine - "What are you listening to?" *Deadpan*"Music") doesn't seem like trolling for me. Again this is all a difference in definitions though. You don't see trolling as always having to be negative, so acting stupid can be considered trolling for you.

Has anyone considered that this might be a troll?

What? No, I'm not paranoid. The government's out to get me, I swear.

I like you. And the guy I accused of trolling was definitely the stupid troll.

I'm not trolling, I think. I might be trolling, but I don't think so.

EDIT: Oops, double-post. What happened to the "Delete Post" button?

Posting to get a rise out of other users, usually to have them quote you and form a flame argument in the thread. Just for the shits and giggles and the knowledge that you fucked up the thread for a lot of people.

As a side note, a flame is when you divert off topic in an argument, usually into some form of personal attack or technical or grammatical error. Also used to get a rise out of the opponent.

Someone correct me if I'm wrong.

Trolling is what you get accused of doing when you disagree with what someone else said but everyone is fixated on the way you said it.
