Despite the subject title, I don't like trolls, i think they can turn civilized discusion into into a flame war if not controlled. However, I am an optimist and i like to see at least a little bit of good wherever I look. So I created this thread to see if anyone can think of at least some good that trolls add to the internet. I would provide an example, but i can't really think of one worthy of starting the discussion.

They can provide countless amounts of entertainment. It's just fun seeing people get mad at them. People who do not realize that their arguments are not the product of ignorance, but merely a way to amuse themselves with your reactions. U MAD?

Oh and the trollface is awesome. I can't help but smile every time I see it xD

Yeah, they are hilarious. You just have to realize they are posting to get people angry at them.

IMO limited trolling adds spice and lulz to any forum; it's only a problem when trolling threatens to take over a board. But the Escapist mods can't take a joke. You might even say... they mad

Warning: Strong Language etc.

Trolls can be funny. But they don't need love, they live off of trolling.

And it doesn't stop the ban-hammer either way.

I love seeing threads erupt into flame wars... well providing those threads aren't on the Escapist. I can't think of any in particular, but there have been multiple that have provided entertainment.

Trolls are like spices; a little bit really brings out the flavor in anything. Too much and you can get sick.

That being said, not all trolls are the same. Some are classified as trolls but they only target people who deserve to be targeted, like terrorists, pedofiles, and racists.

No.

Trolls need to go away for ever.

Well maybe they do bond a community over a common hatred towards them?
This exists. It's called "parts of the internet that are not 4Chan /b/".

Trolls don't need love. They already have all the anemeties of life, which is how they survive. They entertain themselves by illiciting the attention of others.

Without the internet, trolls would cease to exist, and all that would remain are normal teenagers with pent up angst, and the rare jerkass.

I love clever trolls.
They rile up all the stupid people and it is hilarious.

When done right every one can get a good laugh out of it. But when it is done wrong you feel even more stupid looking at it.

The greatest troll I've ever seen was not done on the internet. Arnold on Pumping Iron giving advices

"I see this guy at the gym one day and he's pretty big. He's going to do some competitions so he wants some advices. So I give him some advices. I tell him that to really impress the judges you need to shout after every pose.

So he goes to the competition and starts shouting after every pose. They kick him off stage after ten seconds. What can I say, I don't always give good advices."

Classic.

Good, clever satire gets automatically called "trolling" by the special-ed dropouts who populate even a good web forum.

So if satirists are trolls, then yes, trolls do add something. To those people who know the difference. Despite what you may have heard, sarcasm does work on the Internet---it just works based on context, reputation of the poster, and occasionally brutally obvious cues in the work itself. (yes, I'm still mad about that locked thread.)

More on this later, after I've had a few hours to sit in college classes and remember that offline, people---even the same people who are idiots online---tend to be smarter.

Trolls can be funny, but at the same time they can be total ass hats. I personally think a lot of wannabe trolls who just repeat references to internet memes and have nothing original about them are pretty lame, and tend to be the ones who don't realise when they're taking things too far.

I myself sometimes do some trolling, but i always know where to draw the line.

When a troll trolls a troll to keep trolls from trolling, this is trolling gone right. Troll.
