Yeah, they went way too far, but what are you going to do? Deny freedom of speech? That is much much bigger that one death, and can lead to more.

More importantly, why do they care? So what some random prick on the internet writes hateful things about people dying, didn't they ever hear of "dont feed the trolls"? The more attention the trolls get, the more bile they spew. I should really find the e-mail address of these people and try to tell them this.

I mean, trolls have righted wrongs, brought criminals to justice and been the beginning of exciting cultural phenomena.

It's funny, every time someone says they are shocked by stuff like this it surprises me. All I can think is "Looking around, what makes you think people wouldn't do this?"

I mean, I try to be charitable when it comes to assumptions about other people, but time and again humanity has proven there is no low at least one of us will not sink to.

The only thing i took away from this was the intro "A cool new trend, trolling..." That part cracked me up a bit. There is really nothing new here though and I'm not going to feign sensitivity. Just another face with a name for the "An Hero" section of ED in the eyes of the internet. You're never going to get anonymous individuals to play nice. There are laws in place to stop harassment but the public domain is a *****.

Ultimately this is just another scare story. Cell phones. SARS. Swine Flu. The internet. They're all out to kill you. If the news actually gave a shit I think recycled garbage lines like "cool new trend," wouldn't even make it in the rough edition for the segment.

Practically anyone's death is always sad. But fear, sadness, guilt- these aren't the backdrops for "experts" to talk regulation over.

Is it just me or is there the slightest bit of irony at this thread and a thread where over half of the participants said they would take 10 million dollars if it meant 100 random people were to be murdered, being in the same forum at the same time?

I'm with you on that, the guy doing the main report seemed about one step from grinning thru that whole thing, he really needs to work on that.

As for the trolls, well done TODAY, you've given them exactly what they wanted, more publicity.

Honestly people, next time a news reporter arrives at your home to feed off your son or daughter's still warm corpse, just say no, they're not trying to 'help' you, they just want 10 minutes of easy, sentimental filler, and they'll happily repeat that your dead kid was a stupid slut to the whole nation if it suits the story. If you don't take them up on the offer, they'll fill the time with a waterskiing otter, and you don't have to deal with being used.

Really, how has this helped? If I died and this happened to me, my parents would never find out, as they're clueless about the net. Until of course some media cock shows up to show them carefully selected quotes on their doorstep.

Yes, I think the reporters are about one step above the trolls themselves..and only a small step at that.

Also I can't find the links right now, but there's good out there, too, I recently saw those Westboro 'godhatesfags' fuckers trying to protest in San Francisco I believe, within about an hour, word got around online.

Then people started showing up with their own signs, enough of them to completely make the ignorant twats look insignificant among the 'god hates flags' and ' God's never gonna give you up' 'Gods never gonna let you down' and 'I was told there would be cookies' signs.

Quite hard to seriously protest when you're outnumbered by stupid signs (not that every single one those Westboro fucks carry isn't), and to me, the ideal way to deal with people like that.

We can win thru ridicule and humour, no violence needed. (although I don't know how to apply it to online trolls, personally just a simple post of '*yawn* next please' would probably be the best reaction to such idiocy, however.

The moment they realise no-one is shocked, they'll get bored and go back to editing the word 'poop' into wiki articles.
