Trying to remember horror movie from childhood about a giant devil

I'm about 30 now, so around the time when I was a kid (around 84 to 89) I remember seeing a movie on television about a giant demon or devil in the middle of the town, and I believe a plot point that for anyone to look into its eyes they would turn evil. Mostly what I remember is the leading characters in the end sacrificing himself by jumping into the giant demon. The movie was no gore fest, but it had a lot of paranormal psychic elements. It had to have been made at least in the 60 or 70s from what I remember from the cinematography and the special effects, and the movie could have been English....Any ideas??

Think I remember it, but no clue on what it was called. Will track it down. I 'think' it was based on a Stephen King story, but that could be way off.

I think thats what your talking about. Legend (1985) about the Devil making some chick marry him, and Tom Cruise wont have that, so he saves her, somehow.

English and from the 60s? It sounds like you might be talking about Five Million Years to Earth (called Quatermass and the Pit in the UK). There's no demon, exactly, but otherwise the ending's pretty similar to what you described. the only giant devil movie i can think of is the one

in which the main character gets 9 wishes from the devil and he trys to make this really cool wishes but it turns out the wishes are not what they seem.
