Pearl Harbor was an unnecessary assault and slaughter of thousands of American sailors and a few dozen civilians that were caught off guard by the Imperialist Japanese Navy. Pearl Harbor did in fact need payback, but of course the nukes were not the payback, there was a flight of American bombers that flew straight out of a carrier into Japan and bombed a city in retaliation. The Bombers didn't do much damage, and most didn't return home, but it was the payback and shook Japan. The Atomic Bombs were used to shorten the war and "save millions of lives." If this would ever have been a true statement, we'll never know, but it's our past and we must accept it and learn from it, and hope that it never happens again.EllEzDee said:

I hate to sound like a know it all prick, but technically, Russian already took over Berlin and were already fighting the Japanesse(I'm pretty sure they were already fighting or were drawing up plans to do so)before the bombs were dropped, the American government dropped the bombs because they were afraid of the American losses if there was to be a mainland invasion of Japan(because face it, the Japaneses were willing to suicide-bum rush US positions on random Pacific islands, imagine what a full scale invasion of their homeland would have been). We already got out payback, and it was in the form of two of the largest, most destructive weapons ever used in human history. So yeah, I'd say we got our revenge half a century ago. This can be partially explained by the psychological concept of the "just-world phenomenon." People naturally feel a need to believe that good things happen to people who do good things, and that bad things happen to people who do bad things. If something bad happens to a good or innocent person, many people will automatically say that that innocent person probably deserved it for one reason or another. This same concept is exemplified in this reasoning about the tsunamis in Japan.
That said, this reasoning is beyond stupid and a true demonstration of the ignorance and bigotry that is so prevalent throughout the world today. I sincerely wish good luck to the people in Japan.

They weren't two innocent civilian towns. Both cities were industrial cities. Nagasaki was a large sea port that was important to the war. There were military bases in both cities and had been untouched by the war. They picked those cities to gauge the power of the bombs.aegix drakan said:

Mostly agree with you here, but just wanna slip in that if you say the nukes were just strategy in a war (to save lives yes, but just a strategy none the less), then surely pearl harbor was also? So there is no need for "payback" as there is nothing to "payback"?Razada said:
