Eventually it got to the point where the Tumblr phone app was removed from the Google store which is where this drastic ban comes from.

Really, all they even tried to ban before was illegal content and certain types of extreme porn (and most of that they didn't ban so much as make the most direct related terms not show up on search results, which just meant people searched around related terms). Now, the community of tumblr was such that if you were a Nazi you'd better be as anonymous as possible, unless you're a Nazi furry (which for some reason is less bad?). Because stepping out of line of that bastion of inclusivity and love (for example drawing a shape shifting space rock too thin or too pastel) led to doxing and threats.

How come the media never attacked tumblr for that?

Because it didn't serve the correct political narrative.



The one thing I will say about this - I find it deeply amusing the number of people upset about this who in past cases of sites banning content or developers censoring their creations over outrage would call out things like "It's a company making a private business decision, so there's nothing wrong with it."

Plus, it was really easy to find a whole lot of neatly organized images of certain niches. There were actual communities around these porn blogs, and rather nice ones too.

Well, if you choose to define censorship as any action intentional or not to block content from a site then yes, you are correct. But then even if they do fix it, you're still censoring stuff, just more specifically. And so would basically every code of conduct I guess. I'm not especially interested in exploring the relative applications of the word censor nor the merits of censoring one thing vs another though, so you're going to have to go it alone if that was the conversation you were looking for.
