So a few months ago I got Fallout 2 working on my tiny netbook. It turned out to be a bad idea, because it meant I was able to play it everywhere, which meant no study at university and no sleep lying in bed.
But what really surprised me was how much fun I had with the turn based combat system, which left me wondering if it's a shame that modern technology as made most of our games real time.
I had idea that one could make a modern game thats turn based, with each turn being say 5seconds, the twist would be that everyone's turn would occur simultaneously. So you'd order your character and companions (or leave it to the AI if you wanted) to attack, move, take cover etc.
So say I order my character to run and take cover and the enemy used his turn to shoot at him, this would make it much less likely for him to actually hit my guy. Likewise if they both attacked each other, the faster of the two would fire first, then depending on their skill they might hit them and their damage would influence how they responded, low damaged they might be able to return fire, high damaged might knock them back, wound or even kill them. There'd be a special animation for cool deaths.
But the awesome thing, would be that at the end of a hard fought battle, you'd be able to watch a real time replay of the fight, so the fight you meticulously planned over ten minutes would be reduced to a brutal minute and a half of combat where every character action plays out simultaneously.
So what do you think of that idea?
For added discussion value, what do you think of turn based games and do you have any favourites?
