You seem to have missed the point of the whole Companion Cube thing entirely.
Missed what point? It was an inanimate object used to solve a couple of puzzles which is exactly how I treated it yet it's idolized by some people

Companions cube...Glados...The sawblades in half life 2...

I also ended up caring a lot for my turrets in Bioshock. Don't know why, I guess I'm just weird.

Yeah, I'm joking. I love that thing but it is just a cube... and the sphere pisses me off to no end. That and if you blink, they hit you.

Stone angels have nothing on a harmless cube...
I remember messing around with that on GMod! Scary, but when you spawn five of them and continually run and they keep popping up behind you, it's entertaining.

The Left 4 Dead characters, with the exception of Rochelle, were great, and I was sad whenever Francis got mauled to death.

I've never played any of the Valve games, but my guess is that anyone who's played Portal will immediately mention the Companion Cube.
God I hate that bloody cube purely because of the sheer amount of people who treat it like it's the greatest thing ever. It's a piece of inanimate metal people!!
HOW DARE YOU!!! The Cube will lead us to the light!! ONWARD!! To the kingdom of the CUBE!!
Yes, the Left 4 dead characters..

Fuck the L4D2 characters.. they were all so inbred ;-;

EDIT: Yes I'm being serious, I actually hate Ellis, Nick and Rochelle SO MUCH, Coach only gets points because he black o_O (No racism intended..!)
You know that's completely racist. Of course it was intended.

Its ironic.

Of course you don't love it, or feel attached to it; there's even a line in the game when you incinerate the cube about how inhumane and heartless you are for being the test subject to do it the quickest. It also highlights the sinister aspects of Aperture's/Glados' tests, and quite how deranged Glados is that she would expect a sane person to care for it.

The more people complain about it, the more its "idolised". Its one big inside joke.

I actually get attached to units in RTS games.

One time I was playing Starcraft 2, and I had about 20 marines and 3 medivacs. Those dudes ran around for six minutes killing everything (fully upgraded) as an impromptu strike force. I shouted at the screen when they all got wiped out though. So sad.

And I fall in love with battlecruisers which have 20+ kills or so. I always keep enough energy to drop a MULE in and repair it, because I figure it's earned being alive.

The AKS-74u (named it Danny) and the XM8 LMG (named Wilma) from BFBC2.

More recently, though, there was Baby Huey (Death Machine from Blops) and Bob...

(Bob was the Goliath from Homefront... Not so friendly with him after the last mission...)

I cared more for the little flying guard robots myself. It was always sad, finding a spot where they couldn't find a way through to reach me.

I liked the L4D characters except for Rochelle. At first, I didn't like Louis much, but I grew fond of him. I didn't like him much because whenever I picked random character and it gave me him, I couldn't play as well for some reason. Finally, one day I was playing with my friend and I was Bill, my friend was Francis. We were on the house waiting for the boat to arrive.

The Tank comes, and I throw my molotov on it whilst creaming, "Hwatah!" The Tank then proceeded to chase after Louis, to which I responded, "I'm sorry Luois. ...Nah, I'm not."

My friend and I got a pretty big kick out of it.

I love ED-E.

Also, not quite the same but I always got myself some authority glasses, some reinforced leather armour and the first recon beret. I just love that look, it's so god damned stylish.

So in Half Life 2, in the Nova Prospekt Mission, I got hold of these automated turrets to defend the area. So when I had finished up with that area, I grabbd one and took it with me through the rest of the level, meaning I had an extra turret to use in an encounter. I grew pretty fond of that turret, even naming it (Its Trent btw). When I lost it at the end of the level, I was genuinely sad.

After finishing the game today, I realised something. I let my allies die without a care, even though there had been a lot of work done to make them seem individual, id walk around messing with peoples furniture during important scenes, not even bothering to remember who they were, and yet, I cared about a mass produced piece of machinery that mostly tries to kill me.

So, have you ever actually cared for an object or characterless npc, simply because of the personality you assinged to them?
Complexity vs simplicity

Turrets are something very simple and helpful. They are so minimalist it is much easier to imagine they are what you want them to be. Just like how Gordon Freeman is in fact a very very simple character this is better as it lets the players absorb into the character more.

Turrets do a very simple task (shoot anything they see) but they do it WELL! That is why you like them, the NPC allies do a lot of things but none of them very well. Best thing really is a meat-shield/distraction though at the same time they more than likely just get in your way.

Well I suppose Alyx is good at giving you an emotion boner but in combat the limits of the INTERACTIVITY of her AI is just too great. Interacting with AI is a nightmare to code for and clearly the solution is: keep it simple, and do that simple thing WELL!

The best AI companion is one that is one that is extremely simple, but useful and relate-able.

Now the downside of your turret is you have to carry it everywhere and not ever let it get knocked over, how many other players are going to tolerate that?

So many times has this happened to me.
Although this IS a living thing, I can't play Fallout if Dogmeat dies, just can't do it.

But.. I legitimately like him.. the fact that you kinda have to like the dude as to not be racist is just a cherry on the top..

I detest Rochelle because Zoey was a good few hundred times cooler 8|
It had nothing to do with that you liked him. The only reason you gave for liking him was that he was black. You don't have to be against someone for it to be racist.

The humanoid companions in Half Life 2, at least the ones that can die, are simple peasants, called to arms in the revolution against the combine.

So yes, military alian hardware is better than peasants with guns, if you are up against trained alien soldiers.
