But what about the Doctor Who intro? That's good, isn't it?
Though it's the same concept just revamped season after season. That's cool with me as long as they let you know what episode it is when you start watching it instead of finding out after the commercial after the intro.

I think it's time to blow the scene, get everybody's stuff together... OK 3 2 1 let's jam!
Hell the fuck yeah! It's nice to know that many great anime tv shows also have great openings. They're integral to introducing the show.

What about the IT crowd intro? I love it, it is simple, funny, and it says a lot about the actual show in very short time

So...by that logic movie intro's are fine? Ok, that's good, that means this little beauty is safe:

It's a shame the original TV series of this didn't have an intro, funny that...but oh well.

Intros set up the show and can often be what people remember most about the show. I'm liking American Horror Story's idea of slipping episode references into the intro, references just vague enough that you won't get them until the episode is aired. Some intros can die in a fire, like for sitcoms. But then I don't watch sitcoms anyway. For dramas and sci fi shows, the intro can either be the setup that gets you jazzed for the show coming up or they can be that last 30 seconds you get to use the bathroom or grab a snack. On DVD, whatever, you can skip it if you want to. For my DVD collections, any series that I'd buy on DVD I enjoy watching the intro before each episode.

Someone clearly hasn't seen an episode of Justified.
Exactly what I was thinking, I've been enjoying the shit out of the Justified intro and I don't even like rap.

Sure there are some shitty intros but that isn't a result of them being intros, there are countless great ones and its not worth getting rid of them just to eradicate the few terrible ones.

What? Am I the only one that likes the Game of Thrones intro?
It gives us some much needed information about the geography of the setting but I can't say I even remotely like it. It suits the series well but really isn't to my tastes.

I really like the American Horror Story intros, purely because the song is so damn amazing.

I could watch an entire episode of just that song.

I find that the introduction to many a TV series has been chopped down to something with no substance or meaning (See 'LOST', 'Hollyoaks'), or even a catchy jingle to help us remember the show. It's either epilepsy central or a bland title screen with nothing to look forward to.

Contrastingly, I find that every documentary I watch on a US channel has to have a f***ing 30-second long recap after every single advertisement break. Why? Are people that motherf***ing stupid that they can't remember what they were watching five minutes ago? Does the documentary's target audience consist of the occupants of a crack den?

Not at all. Hell I don't even like the show all that much and I still love that intro

You filthy heretic.

You'd prefer them just randomly switching from a commercial to the next scene?
No, you don't.

Besides you wouldn't have awesome intro's.

Watching a marathon of The Big Bang Theory at my cousins place over Christmas gave me a new hatred for The Barenaked Ladies.

I love GoTs opener, they managed to combine a great theme song with an actual REASON to watch it, how it integrates it into the story by showing you on the map where the various locations in the episode are taking place.

Plus the neat little city graphics never get old to watch~

Actually, I thought TV show intros had mostly gone the way of the dodo.

Many now just have a logo / title screen, that only lasts a few seconds.

Like Castle for example . . .

Castle would be a good example, were it not for the whole

Does it still do that? Please tell me not. A good themesong I can deal with unless I'm marathoning a show. This was too much for even weekly instalments. I could have done with it about once a series at best.

Some intros are just wastes of time. However, if effort and thought are put into them I think they can add quite a bit, and often do. Take Trailer Park Boys for example. The calm pleasant music and nostalgic sepia-tone filter provide an ironic juxtaposition to the brazen nature of the actual interactions in the show. This is a joke in and of itself. At the same time, the underlying message of love and community that is at the heart of TPB is also represented by the happy and carefree frolicking of children.

Not only is this a good intro, but it's so short and sweet that I actually NEVER skip it, no matter how many episodes in a row I watch:

The only downside is that the Adventure Time jingle is now stuck in my head FOREEEEEVERRRRRR.

Intros are hit-and-miss. There are so many openings that I have gone out of my way to skip just because they are awful. I will change the channel for a minute to miss some opening theme songs. But then there are some openings that are just so awesome that they make up for everything else. Then again, I always love short, well-made music videos.

Several of my favorites have already been mentioned (American Horror Story, Game of Thrones, Steins;Gate, Trigun), so I'm going to link to the MTV Teen Wolf intro. Even if you don't like the show, the music and the opening are fantastic. The opening clearly depicts the main theme of the show, which is Dudes Losing Their Shirts.

Oh, and the Lie to Me opening! I miss that show so much!

If we are talking things that need to die associated with TV shows... uhm... Commercials? Marketing? Product placement? Advertising as a business model? I would gladly suffer 10 hours of 10 sec intros actually not trying to sell me garbage I wont buy, dont need, and fully resent being pushed on me than one second of something that by its existence only serves to make this world a shittier place.
What business model would you use to replace advertising? The only alternative I can think of is a subscription model, which would mean you would have to pay for something that had formerly been free. Also, why do you say that advertising "by its existence only serves to make this world a shittier place?"
