Whether they are joyful, moving, heartbreaking or just plain disturbing, I'm sure a lot of people will have some part of a movie that stuck with them for a while.
I have a variety:
- Pokemon - When Ash releases his Butterfree. This was the only scene from my childhood that I ever cried at, and I saw the Lion King.
- I cannot remember what movie this was from (I saw it on Youtube) But this woman somehow got this injury where part of her brain was exposed and she started to rub it euphorically and it triggered a memory of where she had made the cheerleading squad before she died smiling on the road.
- That scene at the start of The Ring that just comes out of frigging nowhere, where Rachel and her sister are talking at Katie's funeral when suddenly you see a flashback of her deformed corpse in her wardrobe. I had heard so much hype about how terrifying it was before watching it so I avoided it for a while. Then eventually I thought "How bad could it be?" so my mother recorded it and we watched it, and I started to get more into it, thinking "oh this isn't so bad..." and then THAT happened. I will always remember that jump feeling I got. But I still carried on with it!

Those are all I can think of at the moment. I would like to hear other's thoughts and ideas. What struck you the most throughout your viewing?

I don't think I'll ever be able to get the suicide scene in The Rules of Attraction out of my head. It's beautiful and horrifying at the same time. Whether that says more about the film or me...

The scene in fight club where Tyler takes the shopkeeper outside the back of his shop, makes him get on his knees and well I wont spoil it but it's fucking brilliant. (about 80 mins into the film)

It also spawned my life motto "No fear. No distractions. The ability to let that which does not matter truly slide." lets me live a stress free life. (of course, I don't follow this motto to the fight club degree but I did spend some time thinking "does x REALLY matter? ... No? Then fuck it".)

When Bran and Rickon are hiding in Winterfell, after Theon has taken it over. The scene that gets to me is when Maester Luwin finds them, and he and Osha are talking at night about how Theon killed two other boys to make people believe he had caught and executed the two Stark boys. They quietly agree together not to tell Bran that other boys died in his place, because he's suffered enough. Then the camera pans, showing Bran still awake, hearing every word of it. :'(

- Also, the scene in Howl's Moving Castle in which Howl and the Witch of the Waste have been summoned to the royal palace. They're supposed to approach the castle on foot (Suliman, the court magician, intends to weaken them by making them ascend the incredibly high stairs). There's a magical line that deactivates other means of transportation around the palace. The Witch of the Waste is being carried in a litter by two "tar-men", and when they cross the line, they melt, still trying to walk as they collapse into puddles of tar. I don't know why, but I absolutely love that scene.

Lemme think:

Courage the Cowardly Dog - the scene in the episode with Ramses (The Man in Gauze! where the cat robbers are best by a swarm of insects. The camera pans away for a second, then pans back, and there's nothing there. That's pretty scary when you're a kid...

The first Negima anime - after a certain character dies, we see the main character sobbing his eyes out. It's pretty heartbreaking. The lack of the usual cheerful opening theme really doesn't help...

CSI Miamai - the bad guys have developed a special machine gun that practically liqufies anyone who gets hit by it. Seriously.

...Huh. I guess depressing/terrifying moments really make an impression...

Wow, thanks for reminding me of that episode. That frightened the shit out of me as a kid.

As for my own, I have two:

I saw this short a few years ago and it just makes me so sad every time I think about it. Shame more people didn't see it.

The second one is recently from the Netflix show House of Cards. For those watching have seen the show, it happens in season 2, episode 1.

In the series so far, Frank Underwood is basically a corrupt congressman who just killed a man for political points and his sex buddy/media contact is putting the dots together. She decides to confront him and break it off, but right after she is finished cutting all ties with the congressman, out of nowhere, he shoves her in front of a subway car killing her off like nothing. I literally shouted "WHAT THE FUCK?!?" I rewound that scene 3 times just to make sure I didn't miss something, but nope, he casually, quickly, and ignobly kills off who was probably the most important character on the show, second only to the congressman himself. At least with the first guy he killed, there was build-up, a sense that Frank using him as a pawn meant to be sacrificed. But when Zoe dies, it literally happens in the span of about 2 seconds.

It gets better. The only other people who know the truth about Frank are her friend and her boyfriend, former of which goes into seclusion and the latter gets setup for cyber-terrorism and is looking at 35 years in prison. Basically, at this point, there is no way Frank can be implicated in her murder. Also in the following episode we see a brutal and bloody frame-by-frame of her getting run over.

Mary and Max is a movie that has the ability to hit you, especially if you grew up different or bullied, but there are two scenes that I cannot forget, and one of them is the ending I cannot and will not spoil ever (It's on Netflix instant queue and on DVD, GO SEE IT), and the other is a very dramatic, very moving scene before the ending featuring the song "Que Sera Sera" by Pink Martini that's shocking. Also, it's an clay-mation film with Phillip Seymour Hoffman's voice which will level you at how well a performance can be given, I guarantee you won't recognize him. RIP.

Also:
I saw a documentary I'm not sure I can talk about that had every scene, particularly any in the hospital with this man that will stick forever in my head, it's so sad, but beautiful.

Shame, with Michael Fassbender is probably another one, the last act orgy is well shot, but quite unpleasant, but it is meant to be.

Bad Lieutenant, not the Nicolas Cage one, the Harvey Keitel one. Because of that movie and it's orgy scene, I cannot see H.K. as anything other than a fearless badass, and I can't listen to "Forever my darling" by Johnny Ace the same way ever again.

and let's go a bit light hearted and say the Zombie Jukebox fight with "Don't Stop me Now" by Queen in Shaun of the Dead, because Nanomachines, son it's well choreographed and very funny.

- The ending of Gallipoli, the 1981 film.

And no, I'm not going to tell you why. It is in my eyes one of the finest war films ever made. And yes, I shall forgive you if that statement makes you roll your eyes a little since people gush like that on the internet all the time. Regardless, it's one of those movies that I think pretty much everyone should at least try. It's kinda old, the soundtrack in particular will seem awfully quaint. But believe me, it will fucking stick with you.

Go watch it. Please?

Moving on...

- The into to Wall-E.

- The opening montage for Up. Eyeballs were suitably moistened.

- The final battle scene in District 9. One desperate, pitiful, doomed idiot in an alien combat exo-suit that he doesn't really know how to use verses a couple of squads of military contractors.

- That scene in Children of Men. Some people probably found it a bit overblown or heavy handed, but it hit me exactly as intended.

- Several scenes in Xena. Generally whenever shit got real and she would go all, "Oh that's bloody it, time to remind the world that I was a villain once!" Then that badass battle theme [http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=n8Y4SnKLMTY] would kick in.

- The opening credits of the early seasons of Battlestar Galactica.

- Sticking with BSG, there's this one bit during the initial attack where one of the Cylon controller lady... people... things is kinda chanting in a even voice, "The cities of Caprica are burning. The deserts of Tauron are burning. The forests of Picon are burning. The mountains of Sagittaron are burning. The Libraries of Gemanon are burning..." Well, I thought it was cool.

That was a book that I had as a kid, not sure why the hell you'd read that to a kid. Horribly depressing stuff.

OT: The scene from Children of Men, I'm pretty sure everyone knows the one, but damn is it a moving example of the sanctity of life even in the worst situations.

Edit: Figures I'd get ninja'd on that one. Also thought of another:

Matt Smith's first episode as The Doctor was okay and a bit forgetful but Goddamn the last ten minutes were fantastic. It's one of my favorite scenes in the whole of the series.

The end of Braveheart will always stick with me as the first movie to ever make me cry (as an adult.) I put full blame on it for making me cry at the end of Gladiator as well.

Of course Marley and Me hit me hard. What made it even worse, was I watched it a couple weeks after a dog we had for fifteen years died because of old age. This happened last year as a note. The tears hit a little harder because of that.

The hospital scene in End of Evangelion... I haven't seen that movie in YEARS, and yet that one scene will never leave my mind... Never!

The whole episode of Thank You from Adventure Time as well as any "plot twist" moment involving the Ice King's past... (especially that Three's Company reference...)

The big reveal in the two-part Ed, Edd, n' Eddy episode where you find out who was really framing the "Ed boys" the whole time... (I never looked at that particular character the same way again after watching that particular episode...)

The ending to the first (and sadly last) season of Tower Prep... DAMMIT IT! I will never know how the next events after the fact would end up, considering the situation it ended on...

The first "battle" between Harry and Voldemort in the Sorcerer's Stone... Despite already reading the book beforehand, I actually thought Harry had died and this was going to be the only movie in the series... (Glob, was I young and naive back then...)

The final moments in Seven Samurai... I saw it coming beforehand (kinda), but it still got to me...

I hate to go for the easy one. I love most of of this movie, and it's really hard to pick one moment in particular.

And another personal favorite:

- The moment in Disney's The Hunchback of the Notre Dame when the King of Fools celebration turns ugly.

When I first saw this it really rather shocked me, since I never expected to see this in a Disney "renaissance" movie. It was the first time since Pinnocchio that a Disney movie managed to make me feel uncomfortable. I still have trouble sitting through it.

- The end of Dead Poet Society.

It ends badly, but still so touching.

- Seth Brundle's 'insect politics' monologe from The Fly.

That whole scene was just so fucking brilliant. It perfectly encapsulates the horror of the situation; The life he once had is but a distant dream, and the nightmare has become reality.

- The scene in The Land Before Time when the little pterodactyl offers Little Foot the cherry.

This scene turns me into a blubbering infant everytime. Even just thinking about it now is already producing some moist.

For tv series it's the ending to Quantum Leap

Sam had a choice of finally returning home for good or to save his best friend Al marriage which he choose the latter. The last scene was just written sentence that Al has now got a happy marriage with kids and Sam never return home.

For a move it's Back to the Future when Marty and Doc where at the Twin Pine mall scene (showing off the Delorean).

Another one of my favorites is the second fight between Batman and Bane in The Dark Knight Rises. Skip ahead to 1:30.

Pretty much any scene when Andreas Katsulas makes a speech:
He was utterly brilliant. The others in B5 that stuck with me...

Sinclair's "unless we go to the stars" interview.
Vir's answer to Mordin's Question (and seeing his wish come true.)
Just about anything Bester said... creepy little dude.
Marcus' "5 minutes from now" ultimatum. (followed by Lennier's "we are NOT humans" response)
Marcus' fight with Neroon.

Lots of good moments in B5. From other shows, I can thing of 2 big ones.

M*A*S*H - Just about every one of the dream sequences in the episode "Dreams." As horrifying as sequences could get in something that was classified as a sitcom. Loretta Switt in the bloody wedding dress and Alan Alda as the choppers wake him up... ugghhhhhh.

Carnivale - Carnivale had some amazing moments. Lots of Clancy Brown's bits as Brother Justin were particularly chilling. But the episode "Pick a Number" from season 1 had one of the most gut-wrenching and heart-breaking endings I've ever seen in TV. Big props to Michael Anderson who's truly a gifted actor.

While the book had me moved, the film of Never let me go really made me cry. The final scene with Tommy and Kathy especially, Ruth's final scene and Kathy's one too.

The most beautiful scenes I have seen are both from French films. The endings of A very long engagement (un long dimanche de fiançailles) and Intouchables were pretty beautiful too.
