Merlin and Dexter are also shows I enjoyed althou Dexter I haven't watched since season 4
Well everybody seems to be hung up on the fact that season 4 is where it's at. I thought season 5 was more interesting. Liked the concept of a bunch of friends getting together to torture and kill women. Literally a creepy concept in itself. Got a guy as the ring leader named Jordan Chase. Really like the fact that hes this kind of yuppie, motivational speaker. Almost felt more real than the Trinity killer. Pretty much adore the 4th season like everybody else. Have to say that I could see the bad guys in season 5 as actually existing. Made a good choice with using Julia Stiles as Dexters love interest, shes interesting as well.

The Shield: it follows a team of corrupt LA cops as they season by season just keep getting more and more entangled in the criminal world that they are trying to tread water in. Everything they do just keep sinking them instead of getting them out it has a pretty solid cast and it also follows some of the non corrupt cops as well and their struggles like one detective that clashed with a few serial killers for example.

Ididn't rea after the quoted part due to maybe slight spoilers?
I didn't end at season 4 STOP!
I haven't just watched after it, yet. I hope I'll do, maybe I'll even start soon since I am out of series now myself to watch. It's just that when season 4 ended I got into a pretty hectic moment of my life not too much time for TV but that's over now and I'll defineatly contniue watvhing the series at some point. My brothers sais it keeps being good so I'll pick it up sometime.

Castle. Nathan Fillion as a mystery writer following an NYPD homicide detective. Gets that perfect balance of drama and comedy. Season 5 is just about to finish, tonight in fact. It's fun, good quality and great writting, plus they actually release the books that Castle writes in the show, which provides some good fun noticing the similarities to cases.

I'll try to come up with less obvious shows.

Bob's Burgers: a unique cartoon sitcom that's similar to the first few seasons of the Simpsons. Just watch a few episodes, it's great.

Touch: a touching show that revolves around a single widower, his mute, autistic and(kind of, but not really) psychic son and cast of new characters that are introduced each episode. The father has to follow the clues his son gives him to essentially give each minor character a happy ending.

That's all I've watched recently that isn't completely mainstream.

Dexter is a good one. By the time you finish the last season shouldn't be far away.
Dragon Ball Z is also very good to watch at your leisure as it's drawn out parts don't seem too long winded when you can watch three or four episodes at a time.

I'm currently working my way through all of Penn & Teller's Bullshit! and while I'm grinding away in my MMOs I keep some Takeshi's Castle up on the other monitor and I'm thoroughly enjoying both. Definitely recommend you give at least Penn & Teller a try.

Yeah, that's seriously entertaining. Have you seen the one with bottled water yet?

OT: Right now I'm just going willy nilly with what shows I watch. I catch new episodes of The Simpsons, Psych, Muromi-san, Hayate No Gotoku Cuties! My Teenage Romantic Comedy SNAFU, Dr. Who, Modern Family, Aiura, Pokemon, yeah, you get the point, I'm watching a lot of stuff, mainly because there's a lot of stuff coming out right now.

Last time I watched anything obsessively was Arrested Development and before that Monk. Monk is one of my all time favourite series and so far the only TV series that has made me cry. That one made me cry a lot too. Arrested development was fun, I'll be watching the next season when that comes in 2 weeks. I don't think it will be as good as the original, but I'm sure it will be OK.

I'm currently making my way through American Horror Story, I'd recommend it. The first show revolves around a family moving into a haunted house, but with all the twists is far from generic, Its a very sexy show too!

I'm on the second season now which is set mostly in the 1960s, uses a lot of the same cast in completely different roles, Doesn't have the moments of terror from the first season but an equally compelling story :D

Eureka - an Average Joe cop becomes a sherriff in a small town inhabited only by geniuses. It's Hollywood Science incarnate, but it doesn't take itself seriously, and that makes me love it (Hollywood Science usually has me foaming at the mouth and screaming at the TV). Decent character drama and some good comedy, although might suffer in a show binge, since the episodes tend to follow the same format and the running gags make laps a bit too often.

Primeval - portals through time start opening all around the Greater London Area. A group of scientists tries to discover what causes them, all the while having to deal with prehistoric (and, occasionally, future) creatures. The first 2 seasons (split into 3 in some countries) were really good, then the show became a bit confused about who the main protagonist should be. However, Ben Miller.

The Shield is simply a masterpiece - like a perfect Shakespearean tragedy. What I love about it is that it never cheats. Every action has consequences - proper ones that sometimes last for hundreds of episodes. Every character is believable, and not in the easy way.

For example, consider the story of Captain Asaveda.
He encounters some criminals, one of whom forces him at gunpoint to perform oral sex on him. In a lesser series, this could have been something that bothered him for a while, then he would get his revenge and it would be all forgotten. Perhaps it might make for a storyline that crosses a few episodes. But in The Shield, the act haunts him for a very long time. Eventually he confesses it to his wife and she doesn't forgive him! She's horrified and thinks he was weak and should have rather died. And eventually he tracks the guys down and only barely manages not to kill him. And the repercussions continue for the rest of the story

Seriously - it is one of the great masterpieces of television.

I'm a DVD box set addict, unfortunately. I must have thousands of hours of television here. A few favourites that haven't been mentioned (unless I missed them):

Mission: Impossible. About one episode in three is just brilliant. And one in three is jaw-droppingly bad. Leonard Nimoy doing Kabuki in yellowface has to be seen to be believed.

The West Wing. Occasionally it has too much mawkish US patriotism, but at its best it's great.

My So-Called Life. Why, why, why did that not get just one more season?

Six Feet Under. Much better than it should have been. Genuinely moving, and one of the best gay characters on television

Blake's Seven. One of those series you watch with trepidation in case it's worse than you remember but turns out to be brilliant. Ropey 70's special effects aside it's got some incredibly daring storylines. Again, a fair few dud episodes, but Avon is always watchable.

Spartacus. Just finished watching the final season. It's one of the craziest things I've ever seen. How they manage to make sex and gore boring is a mystery to me, but once you look past it there's actually some surprisingly good storytelling in there and some genuinely good writing.

Deadwood. Just as much sex and gore as Spartacus, but a very different presentation. Brilliant performances, especially from Ian McShane (a shocker to UK audiences who only remembered his cheesy turn in Lovejoy)

If you don't like Sci-Fi, they you won't like me, cause thats exclusively what i'm about to recommend.

Babylon 5 - Real good series, the characters stay with you, and by the end, you'll look at the station itself as a character too. It starts off slow, and ends with a whimper (seasons 1 and 5 are pretty mediocre), but Babylon 5 is like a sandwich. You need 2 pieces of bread to keep the good stuff from falling out.

Star Trek (all series/movies) - this speaks for itself.

Star Gate - SG-1 and Atlantis have great character development, and both series are pretty deep. SG-1 is rather long, and it's sure to stay with you long after you're done with it.

Battlestar Galactica (both old and new) - pretty much the same as those above, damn good show.

Honrable mention goes to FireFly. All 15 episodes of it....

I'm going through a Stargate bender right now. Going to go through all of them except of course SGU... Babylon 5 is really, really good.
I am doing the same thing with Stargate - first SG1 and then Atlantis whilst at the same time forgetting that the abomination that is Universe exists. I am considering taking a look at Battlestar next though since a lot of people seem to like that.

I tend to do this alot. There are so many shows I have watched in the past few years. But in the last 2 months since losing my job and being currently unemployed, i have been catching up on the following:
Dexter, seasons 4 - 7 ( this one i would reccommend, lots of dark comedy and gripping storylines)
Game of Thrones
Supernatural (though I'm only catching up on season 7 and 8 as i had been a fan anyway but stopped watching last year)
New Girl ( this show is one of my favourites and season 2 is brilliant)

The next two shows are kind of a guilty pleasure so don't judge me please but:
The Vampire Diaries (too be honest Im in the middle of season 4 and its not that good, but I can't help watching it maily to see what happens with Klaus)
Glee ( Its a terible show, but its just soo bad its good. And i need a bit of cringe-worthy cheese in my life)

24 is probably one of my favourites, though i have to admit, i spend so much time watching seasons 1 - 6, and then stopped watching i think it lost its epic qualities in season 6 and so i stopped, have yet to see seasons 7 or 8, I'll probably hold out for another year before watching them.

Currently going through Dexter atm. Before that the anime's Black Butler, Deathnote, and Blood+. Also Babylon 5, Battlestar Gallactica, And i'm surprised no one mentioned it yet as a recommendation as i feel everyone who likes sci-fi should watch: Farscape. Also House, The Walking Dead, and of course Game of Thrones.

I seem to go through phases of obsessively watching every episode of a show over the course of a few months. It started with South Park, a good few years ago now. Then I moved onto the X-files, then House, a few others here and there, Game of Thrones, The Walking Dead, and now most recently Breaking Bad.
After seeing the shows you're into, I can make some recommendations.

Orphan Black - This is my favorite new show. It's a drama/thriller about clones. The lead actor, Tatania Maslany is freakishly talented.

Utopia - A friend recommended this to me. When I asked what it was about, he said it's better not knowing anything about it before you watch it, and now that I watched it, I agree. It's disturbing and for adults only.

Continuum - From IMDb: A detective from the year 2077 finds herself trapped in present day Vancouver and searching for ruthless criminals from the future.

Archer - Imo, this is the best adult cartoon ever produced. If you're into sophomoric humor, you'll like this.

Thanks, I'll look into these!

I find it really interesting to see what things people like to watch. I've seen praise here for a few things I've never even heard of.

My stepdad has been into Weeds recently and my mom's been watching CSI Miami.

I myself am planning on a summer-long old-school Toonami binge. You know, stuff like DBZ, Tenchi Muyo, Big O, Outlaw Star, Yu Yu Hakusho, Gundam Wing, etc.

I have also missed, like, half of this season of Supernatural, due to us losing our Hulu subscription. I plan on waiting for when it pops up on Netflix to catch up.
