I recently created an account and at least once a day there is someone flirting on there, usually the suspects are memebrs of this community(from what I see anyway)... My question is why does it happen? Does talking about computer games really build up that much sexual tension? Or is it the fact that you dont have a clue what they look like(not entirely sure why that would be a reason)?

Hmm, that last one is a bit shallow on my part but I consider myself a "Book by cover and contents" kinda guy... reasonable, right?

Point being, it will probably lead to some friction (not in that way, mind out of the gutter) as I have noticed some repeat "offenders" on there and if the people who they are flirting with take it too seriously there might end up being violence... Most likely verbal, but when these Escapist meetings happen maybe the s**t could hit the fan.

We can broaden this a little by including internet dating as a whole... I personally dont see the appeal, after all its a lot easier to lie over the internet.

EDIT: Not my intention to get people to go there, I wanted answer to why people engage in the rather futile act of internet flirting... For some reason that alone is almost irresistable? XD

I assume it's that second reason.
I wouldn't really know, either way. I don't flirt.
I'm silly as hell, sure, but flirting isn't really my thing.
I'm not even sure how to do it.

I must not have enough people from here added to see all the flirting... It also might be because I'm hardly on what with work and all.

As for the flirting and such, it's either all jokingly, or just ignored. Of course, they could actually be actively trying to get laid.

Do you mean anonymity? Because animosity usually has a negative connotation.

It appears to be fairly serious, some light hearted but what drove me to make this thread is some hardcore flirt-age but with different targets most times... I figured someone who knows something about it (maybe even the hardcore themselves) would come on into the thread and enlighten us.

And as I said(loosely), I just dont want to knowingly watch people potentially set themselves up for a fall and not have done anything about it.

EDIT: For some reason I always thought your avatar was a platypus... its not, but I always think it when I see it. :D

Opps. They just sound similar and I wanted to type it fast before a ninja. Not fully thinking.

Agreed.

That or the Escapist is a generally (very) friendly community.

And that my friend is the attraction, everyone likes to lie about themselves. It's the only subject on which they can be sure the other person dose not know the truth.

I hate lying about myself, I imagine I would always get found out and it would embarrassing to say the least. It also seems pointless, what do you gain from lying on the internet? Anything that would come from a lie is inherently false anyway, anything immaterial anyway... On the other hand the material goods would be questionable and the fact that "you" lied to get them would make it a con.

Am I giving more thought to it that the average internet lier would?

I'm joking. You're not my type. And by that, I mean you're a guy.
