Finally bought the DVD, might be best to wait until it comes out locally if you can't play multi-region DVDs.

The most well known version of Monkey at least in Australia/England

Lies! Everyone knows Dragonball is the most well known version of monkey in the English speaking world :p

In all seriousness, this ought to be cool. SyFy (or was it still the Sci Fi channel at that point?) did a cool miniseries based on it, but it didn't air very many times. Shame, because it was one of their better efforts at modernizing a public domain story. Came out around the same time as Tin Man and whatever that Alice in Wonderland one was called.

and a hell of a lot more justification for doing this than the Hobbit.
Excuse me? Have you even read the Hobbit? There's no way in hell one movie could have done it justice, and even two was pushing it. They did LotR in three, but only with some MAJOR cuts and abridging.

[sub][sub]grumble, grumble...[/sub][/sub]

Anyway, I might look out for this film. I became a bit interested in to Journey to the West after seeing part of this film for an animation history course I took. It's excellent and beautiful, and one of the few examples of uniquely Chinese animation untainted by the cultural revolution, or their current market for rampantly copied and pirated animation.

you may have dubs but i generally always watch movies in the original language with subs if at all possible.

dubs are really f'ing horrible and full of bad translations most of the time.
(and not just in Chinese movies. the dub in Troll Hunter for example is excruciating...)

after a while i don't even consciously read the subs kinda...

that said i am kinda "into" them...i have quite a stack that i've collected over the years.

back when i was a teenage gamer (roughly around the time of the dinosaurs :p ) "Kung Fu movies" (and "Monkey") were one of the things that sat alongside console and arcade gaming as thing we were all "into"...nowadays its seem to have been somewhat kinda have replaced by Anime in "the gaming scene"...but i'm really still quite "into" them...them and Wuxia movies now...[small]i'm secretly in deeply unrequited love with Zhang Ziyi[/small]...

been looking forward to the Stephen Chow one far more than the Donnie Yen effort tbh.

btw has anyone seen the new Wong Kar-wai Ip Man film yet ?
Its your lucky day, according to the stories from last June, a night with Zhang Ziyi will only cost a few million. http://www.nydailynews.com/entertainment/gossip/zhang-ziyi-investigated-chinese-sex-scandal-accused-million-dollar-trysts-pols-article-1.1087557
