Two-thirds of my Skyrim experience can be boiled down to these ten repetitive actions

Ha, that's a silly thing to say and you're silly for saying it. Every game can be broken down to even less actions if you really wanted to.

Shooters:
1. Aim gun
2. Shoot gun
3. Find next enemy

RTS:
1. Build Units
2. Attack Enemy Base

Turn Based Strategy:
1. Research Good Tech
2. Build large army
3. Defeat enemy factions

JRPG:
1. Ignore plot
2. Grind levels
3. Enjoy pretty cinematic

Besides, I haven't found Skyrim repetitive at all if you actually do the quests. The Daedric quests, the Thieves Guild quests, the Dark Brotherhood Quests, the Civil War quests, and the Main Plot quests all have great set pieces and interesting and varied goals.

I would put my repeated actions for every other game but they would look pretty similar I think.

Imagine Super Mario lol....
1.) Push right on D-pad
2.) Hit B
3.) Hit B
4.) Hit right and B together
5.) Fall hole
6.) Swear
7.) Repeat
8.) Go out, buy a real game. Never touch Mario again.

I enjoy these actions. I even have a simple equation to help out on number 6.

Value/weight=x

If X is less than 3 it's not going in my bag. Unless it's a health potion or item I could use.
You do realize that lockpicks will destroy the universe, right?

Here's an idea... don't be an easily led automoton. Learn to role-play. I had one of the better battles in a while today just fighting some bandits. Mostly because I had tons of options (spells, weapons, shouts) that I could have fun with. Lightning bolt that guy off the tower. Conjure a Dremora Lord to fight that one. FUS RO DAH those three. Whip out the mace to cinematically finish the leader. Oh, you want to get involved too, Mr cave bear? Have some force lightning as I cackle madly.

I guess some people have just been ruined by the forced paths and actions of games like Uncharted, Gears, God, etc. and don't know how to enjoy themselves when let free of the restraints.

No, it just takes a certain type of gamer to enjoy dungeon crawling.
Person A:"Why do I want to fight my way through that cave?"
Person B: "To get the loot inside."
Person A: "What do I do with it?"
Person B: "Sell it or use it to get better equipment."
Person A: "To what end?"
Person B: "To better loot caves."
Person A: "........" or "Awesome!"
See, I think that went wrong with the first answer. If your answer is "To get the loot", you're already on the 'wrong' path. If it's a dungeon I stumbled across, I want to explore, to find out what this cave/dungeon's story is. In particular ones that have dead adventurers in them, complete with a journal or something that tells me why they were there, and why I should perhaps go after it as well. Loot is secondary.

But yeah, I guess I kind of agree, that you have to be a certain type of gamer to enjoy all it has to offer.

1. Walk into dungeon
2. Get mobbed by melee enemies
Try sneaking, or get yourself a meatshield companion.
3. Backpedal and spam dual cast destruction spells on whatever is up in my face until it dies
I barely ever find myself backpedalling, and I rolled full mage. Are you just rushing in? Don't do that if you're a squishy build.
4. Press down on D-pad to pause game and drink Restore Health/Sorcery potions
You're a mage, use your damn healing spells. Magicka takes almost no time at all to regen with the right equipment.
5. Repeat steps 3 and 4 until all enemies in dungeon are dead
Well obviously.
6. Loot all bodies
Why? Hardly anyone has anything good, unless you're just in it for the alchemy ingredients.
7. Fast travel to nearest town
8. Wait for merchants to open and/or their gold to regenerate
Just put the stuff you couldn't sell in a chest in your house, sell it next time.
9. Sell all the shit I looted
10. Buy better equipment to go looting dungeons with
You buy equipment? I mean, spells sure, but anything else is a waste, you'll find beter stuff pretty quick.
11. Repeat steps 1-10 ad nauseum

I realized so much of the game involves preparing for combat: buying weapons, crafting armor, learning spells, finding alchemy ingredients to make potions, training skills, learning shouts... but then when I do get into combat, it is over in a matter of seconds and doesn't involve any tactical decisions beyond what weapon or spell to equip to each hand.
Training skills? Automatic. Buying weapons? Pointless. Learning spells/shouts? Takes seconds.

The only diversions I get in the game are talking to NPCs, fighting the occasional dragon (which is much more exciting than regular combat), and doing much more varied Thief's Guild and Dark Brotherhood quests.
Either we are playing very differently, or you're exaggerating. What's more, as others have pointed out, anything sounds incredibly boring if you break it down into simplified step by step instructions.

I was just playing a quick level of COD4. All I did was;
Step 1:Crouch behind cover.
Step 2:Shoot some guys. OPTIONAL: Move forward a little.
Step 3:Get shot.
Step 4:Repeat steps until everyone is dead or you get to objective.

For me, X has to be 20+. I will make an exception for items that are between 10-20 if the total value is in excess of 100.

OT: Every game can be simplified. This game offers plenty of alternative styles of play if you are up to the task of treating it as a role playing game. Assign some personality to your characters besides "do shit for rewards". Hell, the game almost promotes racism, so pick some races you are going to hate/love with your character and play accordingly. Or if you don't want to do that, pick some personal quirks to add to your character like kleptomania, or anti-social, or homicidal tendancies. Perhaps you are a mage who dislikes warriors or vice versa. I mean, pick a style of play and play through it that way, then the next time you play you will run across new crap.
I know that when I play, I don't worry about doing everything with a character, I just worry about what they would do next and see where it leads me. This game actually offers some good quests to mix it up as well. I wish you could forfeight quests personally as I do run across quests that my characters will never do. As well, I wish you could 'drop'(not sell) quest items.

You'll make it over the hole if you push A instead of B. (A jumps, B is sprint/fireball)

100% of my FPS experience boils down to two repetitive actions.

"Oh, a guy." *BANG* "Yaaaay..."
"Oh, a vehicle." *BOOM* "Yaaaay..."

What's your point?

I feel Skyrim really lacks the sense of humour or fun that Both Oblivion and Fallout had in many of thier offbeat quests or environmental easter eggs. I've yet o come accross a quest that has a distinct air of humour about it.
Look harder, there's a Daedric quest with a talking dog, and one that is basically "The Hangover"
That Hangover quest had me baffled and laughing hysterically throughout. Totally didn't expect anything significant to come from the drinking contest.
Haha, I loved that one.

On a slightly more random-funny note, I'm currently the Archmage at the College, and while I was walking around town some new mage boy came up to me and said he wanted to get in to the college, but needed to practice his wards. He asked if I'd put one up for him so he could test it out. I figured, sure, why the hell not, so I throw up my ward and he starts casting spells at me.

Next thing I know Lydia had stepped in front of me, cut off his kneecaps, and was in the process of beheading the poor little guy. I laughed for a good ten minutes straight at the sight of his head rolling down the hills in Whiterun.

All RPGs pretty much boil down to:

1. Get resources to upgrade
2. Upgrade
3. Get further along in story maybe
4. Repeat

Stop raiding dungeons and do something else instead then. And don't fast travel.
It's even worse if you don't. I told myself I wouldn't fast travel. That ended quickly, because not fast travelling ended up being a laborious, boring process.

inb4 hurr durr u no enjoy rp
Stop playing then.

Every game can be summed up like that. Go ahead, try it. And yet, you are criticizing Skyrim for something that every game is guilty of. The game that actually manages to stand out as the only true RPG (in the full meaning of role playing game) of this generation.

For me it's the monotonous and repetitive quests, and the complete lack of influance you have in dealing with them.

It caused me to think why I wasn't simply playing New Vegas; a much better RPG.

I think you just don't seem to be putting much effort into it then. Slow down, enjoy the game. Don't run in, kill everything. I don't have that problem. I use more tactical spells and stealth, makes combat more interesting. Like placing the runes, stealth kills. And on my warrior, combat is satisfying, with cool sword fights and such. Try and role-play a character.

99% of most modern FPS games can be summed up in these three actions:

1. Shoot dudes
2. Run to the next group of dudes
3. Watch a cutscene

Oh, and Fighting games can be summed up in one action:

1. BUTTON MASH!!!!

Any game can be summed up like that if you want to. Hardly proves anything.

Bigger than my list.

1. Dungeon dive
2. Offload loot
3. Ignore quests
4. Repeat 1
Im level 30 and haven't even seen the Graybeards yet.
I'm like level 42 on my latest character and I haven't even seen the dragons yet.
Fuck you, I thought I was the ultimate procrastinator. I think i'd prefer the game like that. Every-time I travel to Dawnstar some dragon tries to get the jump on me. I swear to god, there's like 5 skeletons piled around the town.

Anyone know the console command to get rid of the skeletons?
Cast a zombie spell at the skeletons multiple times. It's the equivalent of a broomstick.

I'd recommend a different list...

1, Pick a playstyle and use it til bored
2, Fund switching playstyle using money you looted from step 1

Repeat.

Doing this I found that the Illusion school is surprisingly useful when paired up with melee, bound weapons are brilliant to use while your enchanting is too low to put anything good on a normal weapon and using a shield makes the game much less of a pain in general.

You know... I think this sounded much more clever in your head, but I doubt many other games could make it to ten steps.

GTA?
1)Drive to guys house
2)Drive to area
3)Mini cutscene
4)Chase/Drive away from bad guy
5)Get out of car and shoot shit
6)Occasional robbery

Yet that remains a fun series.

Halo?
1)Shoot
2)Drive
3)Activate something
