I don't get why everyone is so upset about this... some content costs a lot of money to make.
Over 30 hours of gameplay only for 25$... you do realize some entirely fully released games don' t have that length...
But I do understand why people are scared to be screwed in the future by accepting this cause many companies abused the DLC system....

@Stork
I think a very few people are upset about this, because other companies have ruined the words dlc and season pass for them and they dont want the witcher to go down this road.
The rest is just happy about more witcher.

I am not feeling great about this.
As much as i love CDPR and the Witcher games, they allways have massive amounts of issues on release.
Given that they basically promise to release these massive expansions so shortly after release of the main game, doesn't make it seem like they give themselves really any room to fix all the issues that the main game will almost definetly have.

A real expansion is a continuation. A DLC is just...fluff. If you want to make the world bigger, make it bigger at release. If you want to tell more story....do so later. But it better move things forward instead of sideways :\
Why can't an expansion be sideways? Why can't the main story be an awesome self contained entity? I personally prefer expansions to be sideways. That way, I don't feel like I'm having my story cut short. Besides, a lot of the story lines seem to be coming to a conclusion for this game. I wouldn't want them to leave things inconclusively just so they have room to keep telling the story through DLC.

I suppose it says a lot for the goodwill that CDProjekt have earned that they're not being crucified - like I imagine most companies would for announcing DLC before release - but in some places actually lauded for announcing this.
Probably helps too that they're announcing it during what is typically the bug fixing time of development. Seeing as that's just one portion of the development team, it kind of makes sense that they'd have all of the other people start working on other stuff. Besides, it's not like it's day 1 DLC. The first is roughly 5 months away from release, and the second is even farther. I'll admit that as soon as I read the title my gut reaction was "oh not you too", but if what they're saying is to be believed (and I won't truly believe it until I actually see it), I personally don't think it's all that bad. Comparatively anyway...
I cant think of a single dlc/sideways expansion I've enjoyed. When the main story is over....its OVER. Lets just leave it imo.

If the story they are making in the DLC is important for the overall story/game, it should be in the damn game. If its not...why the hell does it exist? Just my opinion though. And by all means, I dont think that they should leave W3 inconclusive. One of my absolutely biggest sources of hatred is unfinished stories and endless continuing bullshit. One of the (numerous) reasons I dropped the Assassins Creed franchise after the 3rd game or so.

I can understand wanting to capitalize on a fresh game engine instead of starting over from scratch....but you still can. Just hire good writers. I wouldnt have minded purchasing expansion packs for all the Witcher games as long as there was a point to them. It IS possible to both capitalize on a product AND treat the customers to something great. The problems is simply that most DLC nowadays is completely phoned in when compared to the brilliant expansion packs of yore. Beyond the Dark Portal, Brood War, Throne of Bhaal, Lord of Destruction...man. Blizzard made some freaking awesome expansions in the olden days :s

I have a feeling we may actually be on the same page since I completely agree with you in regards to Assassin's Creed DLC. Still, when I think of my favourite expansion of all time (the Shivering Isles), that is definitely a sideways expansion. It's a separate area to explore and the story is completely separate from the main quest.

This might just come down to me misinterpreting what you meant by sideways expansions. In my mind, that means it's a separate entity from the main game, and not important to original game's experience in any way. Otherwise, like you said, why not just include it.

In all honesty, I can't think of a game that did better DLC than Borderlands 2. It was outrageously fun and original content that at most, added a little back-story or personality to certain characters of the game, while the self contained stories in each one were a blast and were just as funny, and in the case of Tiny Tina's Fortress, better, than the original game.
