When we type its hard to get the point across that were being sarcastic so my thought is why dont we find out a way to show we are being sarcastic?

So post your suggestions on what we could do to show sarcasm on the internet.

My Suggestion is how bout we type it out like this [Sarcasm] [Sarcasm]

I've seen it done where type something completely obvious, but then add at the end, to seem even nerdier.

But sarcasm is so obvious on the internet, why on Earth should you do something to make that point across, when sarcasm is typically voice inflections?

EDIT: What the doodle, I type "<" but it shows up as "[" on the post? Alright, whatever. But imagine all previous "["s in this post as "<"s.

If I remember correctly, someone did make a "sarcasm mark" that you add to a sentence, like a normal piece of punctuation, to denote sarcasm.
But, of course, they were/are running it like a business. So you have to pay to get that sarcasm mark and use it.
I think it was some obscene price, as well, just for a single piece of punctuation they made up...
wonder if anyone bought it...
Edit: Found a news article on it (From another site [http://www.telegraph.co.uk/technology/news/6995354/Sarcasm-punctuation-mark-aims-to-put-an-end-to-email-confusion.html]). Price is $1.99 for the "Sarcmark" >.>

[sarcasm]this will end well[/sarcasm] It's like a spoiler or image. You could always use italics.

Edit: whoops wrong thread.

OT: It's hard to figure out what is and isn't sarcasm from text, so usually it all devolves into bloody wars over one missed emotion.

Would sarcasm tags fix it... probably not, sarcasm is only really accepted by people you know, others will still mostly find it highly offensive, but it's always worth a try.
Altho you then miss out on the whole surprise of the moment when people realize it was sarcasm and get a good laugh.

?

For the most part I think sarcasm is easy to pick up. Most people only use sarcasm when it conflicts their previous points or is absolutely ludicrous.

And some people already thought of the idea: Google SarcMark.

I, personally, believe it is a wholly necessary and not at all useless grammatical device and was not in the slightest paved for financial benefit.

I usually have to type [/sarcasm] to stop people getting offended. It would be much easier if we could colour our text blue, and everyone would know we were being sarcastic.

Aside from that, [HEADING=1]Aside from that, stop making so many new threads![/HEADING] I swear this is the tenth one I've read started by you in the last two days :p

Uh, if you start using clear pointers to mark that you are using sarcasm, it will defeat the purpose of actually using sarcasm. If you aren't skilled enough in using words to get your point across, you shouldn't use sarcasm at all. The most clever sarcasms are those that rely not on tone of voice, but of proper use of words.

Ugh, I especially hate all those that type "J/k" after a joke. If your joke is going to offend someone, and this bothers you, don't tell it? Every joke is aimed at someone (except the pun), someone will always be the victim. Writing "J/K" after something just makes you look like a kindergartner.

I thought a system was already in place, along the lines of /thread, /rant, /humour etc. Personally I try to avoid sarcasm on the internet as it is so difficult to convey (dry sarcasm, anyway), but I don't think there needs to be a concrete method just as long as the poster in question makes their inflection clear somehow.

Besides, you try teaching this bunch of elitists anything. /sarcasm

See?

I do :) They're much more interesting than most of the stuff thrown around on the forums. It's just that... Actually, I'm not sure why I disapprove. I just have a vague notion that... Oh great, now I'm examining my thoughts and beliefs. Thanks :p

I don't actually have anything against them, I'm just not used to seeing so many from the one person in such a short period of time.

Italics are usually enough of an indication, if any is needed at all. Some people still won't get it though, but then again, some people just don't understand sarcasm.

After all, it is such a difficult concept to grasp.

Funny, I had this exact conversation with my ex this morning. Sarcasm is easy to convey through text: your best friend is the ellipsis...

it only works if ppl reading actually have a sense of humor. Most ppl just assume everything said, ON THE INTERNET, is verbatim exactly what is meant.

Great idea, no-one can ever tell when someone's being sarcastic by text alone!

/sarcasm

[sub]That might have come across a bit harsh, I don't mean to hurt anyone's feelings, I was just trying to put my point across in a less boring way... It just seems you have never seen anyone use "/sarcasm" in a post yet, or you see it necessary for someone point out the start and finish of the sarcasm.[/sub]
