U.K. Politician Using Oslo Shooting to Change Ratings

Keith Vaz motioned Parliament for PEGI to classify "ultra-violent" games differently.

Across the pond, MP Keith Vaz from Leicester East has long been an opponent of violent games, from his calls against Rockstar's Manhunt and Bully to linking a racial serial killer to Counter-Strike. Now, he is using the recent testimony [http://www.escapistmagazine.com/news/view/116848-Norwegian-Mass-Murderer-Defends-Gaming-Habits] from the Norweigan shooter Anders Breivik to demand for stricter classification of games.

"This House is reminded of the consequences of the ineffectual Pan European Game Information (PEGI) classification system for video games following the testimony of Anders Breivik about the tragic events in Norway in July 2011," reads Vaz's motion before Parliament.

"Breivik describes how he trained for the attacks using the video game Call of Duty: Modern Warfare," Vaz continues before stating he "is disturbed that Breivik used the game to help hone his `target acquisition' and the suggestion that the simulation prepared him for the attacks."

Vaz "is concerned that PEGI as a classification system can only provide an age-rating and not restrict ultra-violent content" and he "recognizes that in an era of ever-more sophisticated and realistic game-play more robust precautions must be taken before video games are published."

He ends by calling "on the Government to provide for closer scrutiny of aggressive first-person shooter videogames."

I find it depressing that someone with as much authority and responsibility as Keith Vaz has as a Member of Parliament finds it necessary to use every potentially scandalous story involving games as a way to further his own agenda. Vaz sees violence in games as a threat to public safety, but he refuses to look at the evidence on the matter and instead is influenced by infrequent events and testimony.

Modern Warfare is as close to actual war as say Minecraft is to working in construction. The guy is an idiot who doesn't know what he's talking about. I find it depressing that so many idiots are politicians.

Fuck me, I saw the headline and my first thought was 'oh for fucks sake, I bet it's that braindead fuckknuckle Keith Vaz.'

All my fears are proven true.

Look at his face.

Do you think he's FOR any kind of enjoyment or pleasurable activity in any way?

I'd like to use the recordings of everything he's ever said in a bid to gain stricter rules on what a stupid twat can say to reporters.

I swear I can normally create a far more more fluid, better written and clearer defence, but this guy just makes me rage. He blissfully ignores all evidence and science in favour of pleasing the Daily Mail readers in his constituency.

I've never been a fan of Labour, but I tend to follow Tom Watson on Twitter because he's a gamer and often goes out of his way to show up Vaz's idiocy on a topic Keith knows less than fuck all about.

If I thought like him, I'd want to ban vaginas, because one caused him, yet I'm open minded enough to see all the good they can offer, and on balance, they just about offer enough to allow the crime of bringing Vaz into existence.

As has been mentioned above, knew it would be about Keith Vaz before opening the article. And I knew it would be in relation to the Oslo shootings too. Kinda surprised Keith Vaz never jumped on this "connection" sooner.

He called Call of Duty a "simulation"? Nevermind that, but a means to 'hone' his target acquiring skills? The only thing Call of Duty would ever be able to hone is playing videogames with crap connection quality and lots of latency as well as blurting out thoroughly unoriginal insults about other players' mothers.
Here we have it, folks: another parliamentary man who has no bloody clue what in the hell's he's talking about.

I really don't want to vote Labour. Hell, I don't want to vote for any of the cocknuggets we've got malingering around...

Someone give me money so I can go into politics.

Also he never gives Tetris the praise it deserves for fully and completely training people to be ready to go into the construction industry, as it's obviously exactly the same as real life, just like CoD trains you to kill real people.

I'm holding back a lot here, as if I said what I really thought about Vaz, I fear my my Neo badge would be retroactively removed :)

I could give you money. Lots of it, actually. And I'm not talking about Monopoly dollars.
If you give me something in return of course. I'm one to believe in equivalent exchange, you see.

Well, if you could lend me a few diamonds and few buckets of lava, I'll go to the beach and... this is all sounding like too much effort.

How hard can it be to not spend money on nuclear weapons we won't use, put it into the NHS whilst paying doctors and nurses whilst getting rid of the fucking middle managers and...
No, that's common sense. Curses.

I'm clearly not cut out for politicks.

Shame you didn't want to do like all the other politicians. I really could've used your soul.

Don't worry, as a backbench opposition MP he doesn't have too much authority. In the UK unless there is a hung parliament the government is always decided by whichever party has the most seats in the commons. That basically means that in order to have much effect as an individual in the commons you have to be a government minister or a high ranking member of the opposition.

Saw the headline and knew it was Vaz immediately. Nice to see our own mini-Jack Thompson is keeping himself busy.

I said it before and I'll say it again. Just because Breivik used CoD to learn how to shoot doesn't mean it taught him how to kill! Being able to shoot to kill comes from the inside, you have to have the strength of will to shoot with the intent of causing bodily harm and death. Ask just about any man or woman whose been in military, especially one that's seen action, and he or she would tell you that it's not as simple as point and shoot.

He could just as easily learned how to shoot from a BB gun or possibly a shooting range (if that's possible in Norway). Hell he could have gotten a nerf gun and learned to aim from that!

That game did not make Breivik who he is and it did not make him a killer. The fact that he is schizophrenic made him who he is and that's what made him a killer. It's as simple as that.

The problem being, our generation has seen so much porn, that the moment we got into office and started actually doing some good, the Murdoch empire would destroy us with front page headlines about our perverted past. Hell, I've seen 'barely legal' and schoolgirl style porn. That's enough to brand me a 'sick pedo' on a Sun front page. That front page being just in front of an 18 year old girl with her tits out, with a 'quote' from her on the day's news next to it, written by the editor.

I know it's off topic, but if you've got any interest then:

http://www.bloggerheads.com/page-3/

After all, who could support a leader that fixed the economy, dealt with crime, education, and public services, but liked titties?

That there is one big reason why we're fucked. They take Vaz seriously because he appears to be on some moral crusade to 'protect the children'. I still maintain I'd vote got someone who regularly blew goats if he showed some sense, and didn't immediately sell his soul to Murdoch and big business.

The real question is how would it teach him to shoot. Aiming a real gun =/= using thumbsticks.
Utterly different experiences, so the idea of video games training you to shoot is shit.
They tried the same argument at Columbine with DOOM, as well

Keith Vaz! You idiot!

YOU'RE GIVING THE SHOOTER CREDIBILITY BY TAKING HIM SERIOUSLY! We do NOT want him seen as credible! We want him and his manifesto dismissed as the insanity that they are!
