Enough of my ranting

Mine would probably have to be New Years Day, but only because it has the most plays out of all my U2 songs. Streets, With or W/o You and I Still Haven't Found What I'm Looking For would also be up there.

I don't know any songs by them. What I have seen hasn't particularly enthused me to look for more.

So am I right in thinking that most people's experience of U2 only extends to their recent stuff? Anyone who's interested should go and listen to their records between War and The Joshua Tree and hear the band at their peak.

...anyway, my favourite song is Sunday, Bloody Sunday, the version from the live album Under a Blood Red Sky (``This is not a rebel song!'')
I concur!! Personally i think their old stuff is a tad better, not to bag out the last couple of releases.

It's not reverb. It's delay.
I don't know why people think that just because they use an effect that their music sucks. Delay is one of the reasons U2 is so popular... because it sounds good.
As a guitarist, I just want to say - delay is God :)

The fact of the matter is, The Edge isn't a brilliant guitarist in terms of technical ability, but in terms of finding melody U2 are fantastic. And that's what music's about isn't it? I'd rather have a song that actually creates emotion and sounds good than something that is technically brilliant but completely cold.

Yup, The Joshua Tree is certainly one of the best albums of the decade, and one of the most important rock albums in history.
Thats a very naive statement. What is exactly so important in U2's blandess for rock music, and how did you come to the conclusion that they made the best album of the decade? =.=
He said one of. Not the. And if you're entitled to an opinion then so is he.

In my opinion U2 is one the most bland musical experiences a person can have the misfortune to experience. Their song writing is compleatly generic and poor. Id rather listen to Lady Gaga than U2.
Oh yes, it was totally naive of me, I apologise profusely. It's important because of the direction of indie music, the use of effects in post-rock and shoe gaze since, blah blah blah. I don't have an issue with people disliking them at all, like I said I'm not their biggest fan overall, but you can't disregard the influence that The Joshua Tree has had on music.

And where did I say it was the best album of the decade exactly? It's, in my opinion, one of the best albums of the decade and plenty of music-lovers, critics, and other musicians agree on that.

And what exactly is wrong with Lady Gaga? It's catchy pop music.

Love the music. Hate the politics. REALLY hate the politics. Not because of the beliefs exactly, but because everything the band fucking does is political.

^ Favorite song ^

Yes, I am aware that it is one of their MOST political songs.

Why am i not surprised that the first reply is a troll?
Because having a differing opinion makes him a troll, right?

If he said something like "I don't like U2 and everyone that does is a..." then yes, he would be trolling. Jesus, people, be a little less sensitive.

Anyway, I also don't much like U2, but Sunday Bloody Sunday is a great song.

Im not sure if i see how it influences Post Rock or Shoegaze, it seems to be the the most regressional bands related to the genre. Im not sure what influence The Joshua Tree has had on music at all.

Well thats all there is to her, simple 4/4 verse chorus catch pop music.

Doesnt do much.
Look at the use of effects that The Edge uses, and compare it to the effects used by My Bloody Valentine. Sure, MBV gave us the biggest jump in terms of effects use, but there's a real influence there in terms of chorus, delay, tremolo. More recently bands like Autolux have clear Joshua Tree-era U2 influences. As for post-rock, the layering of Mogwai/65DOS/Explosions in the Sky, and most recently vocal post-rock like Youthmovies and Jeniferever owes a lot to the production and even songwriting shown on The Joshua Tree.

Not to mention the more 'boring' indie scene has a lot of U2 influence. Not many of them will admit it obviously because U2 are the most uncool band ever, but look at Only by the Night (or whatever it's called, the most recent Kings of Leon album), U2 is probably the most obvious comparison.

I don't really see why that's so wrong regarding pop music? There's a place for everything and if Lady Gaga sets out to make catchy songs then what's the harm in achieving that?

As several people have already said: Bono is a fucking moron.

The music's not bad, but I just cant get into it as whenever a U2 song is played it reminds me of how big a twat Bono is.
