Cliff Notes Version of Backstory to this:

Ubisoft was going to force the censorship laws from China on the rest of the world in Siege in order to save themselves time and effort from having to maintain two different versions of the game. Since many of the maps had questionable settings by PRC standards as well as some cosmetics, Western and non-PRC Eastern fans were justifiably upset by this, particularly Korean and Japanese players. In addition, it seemed to many that such a move would be directly spitting on the legacy of the man who penned the original series and whose name still adorns the games - Tom Clancy.

Ubisoft has now decided that they will in fact make two separate versions of the game in order to meet PRC standards AND keep fans outside China happy.

Personally I'm pleased by this - it was a stupid, lazy move by them in the first place, and seemed doubly stupid in light the history of the man who gave birth to the series attitude about such things.

I'd have thought that Mr Clancy might raise an eyebrow about his games being played in China at all. 0_0

Even if he were still alive, I don't think Clancy would have much to say period. It's been a brand name for a long time now , rather then anything he's had any say in.

Hell, there were plenty of "Tom Clancy" books that were basically ghostwritten when he was still alive and apparently Ubisoft bought the rights to his name 10 years ago. Not licensed, outright bought, to use in whatever way they want. I imagine Clancy got quite a bit of money considering he gave up any future royalties.

The fact that they thought the community would be fine with them censoring the game for everyone was really dumb.

They should just say fuck off to China and only have the one version.

Do Chinese fans not deserve the game because they are Chinese?
Despotic murderous governments don't deserve games that cater to their authoritarian over-sensitivity.

And what about the people themselves?

I'm sure they want boobies and blood in their games just like most humans.

It's not exactly a choice made by moral or political standpoints, and more the fact that China is a growing market consumer of videogames. Making two versions of the game makes more sense than altering the content of everyone if they were going to make a separate version for the Chinese market, anyways.

If they were going to make a new version, it's not like their original work was somehow going to magically disappear.

Y'know that the Chinese themselves, and especially the younger generations (read: anyone under 40 in my experiences) aren't too pleased with the censorious attitude of their government either.

Encouraging evil governments is wrong. But for the people of China, missing out on Rainbow Six Siege is the least of their worries.

I do not support appeasement.

So Maybe games should Say fuck off T
to Autralia too since Autralia has a a lot of censorship of games.

My point is, just because a government has certain laws/views,doesn't mean the population naturally agrees.

Yeah missing out on a game is the least of the worries, which kind of proves that there is a problem with their government and the people shouldn't be treated as extensions of their respective governments.

There have been plenty of times that game companies should have said fuck off to Australia. Germany too.

Games comes censored to the U.S also. Japanese games usually.

Why should gamers get the shaft because their governments/People of influence has ass backwards Archaic views on entertainment and media?

Censorship is evil. Nobody gets to say what is or isn't acceptable. If anyone gets the power to do so, they will abuse it, absolutely. This means that we all will have to agree to tolerate content we personally find distasteful or even offensive, because the alternative is just that bad.

Now, I don't think the content that was being censored here is really all that bad in just about anybody's eyes, but that's kinda besides the point. No matter what content, we must always remain consistent about this point.

Good on Ubisoft for mending their ways. (now that's one sentence I never thought I's type, the future is full of surprises I guess haha)

So here's an article that sheds some light on how do the chinese censors work.

As you can see, those guidelines from PRC Ministry of Culture set a pretty wide net.
That being said, this is better than making censored version the only available.

I think she meant that China censoring video games is just a tip of the iceberg.
And sure, democratic countries(Germany, Australia etc.) do that as well, but they don't go as far.

I don't disagree that gamers shouldn't get the shaft because their government is wrong, I just disagree that condoning, supporting, and rewarding that government's faults is the way to fix that. That only tells them they are right for doing it and that they will get their way. That isn't ok.
