does anyone actually believe this will hold up for more than a month or 2?


what gaming companies seem to not realize is that there is a lot of skill, and potential in rogue programmers. i strongly believe the games using the online drm will be decompiled and the DRM stripped from the game within months. if not someone is gonna just make a fake server that redirects all input/output packages to ur own computer and allows u to play the game regardless of it being bought or not.


im kinda curious what everyone actually thinks of the situation. will it work in ubis favor, or just give someone something to do for a month while cracking it?

Anyway, as to my actual thoughts: its ridiculous.

People without a net connection at home are already limited to what they can play, and with this plan those (and there are lots of them) who have a very patchy connection won't be able to play either, because it won't be worth it.

Ubisoft have even admitted it'll be cracked pretty sharpish.

They need to make things more attractive to people, this makes it a lot less. No one wants to buy something, knowing full well that the people who have got their grubby little hands on it illegally are getting the better deal.

I.e. a game without DRM.

heh, DRM never really affects pirates, because hackers will get past it. regardless how big and bad the system is. which i find funny, they're just making life harder for the rest of us....

As it happens, I'm about to start writing a newspaper article about the whole Ubisoft DRM issue, asking whether or not DRM works in preventing piracy and looking at the pros and cons of it. It's for the Tech section of my student newspaper, at this website:

Tech is found in the LS2 section, it barely ever gets anyone interested in writing for it so the associate editor was happy to let me do a piece this week. The issue should be released on Friday, so anyone in Leeds can see it then but since most people here won't be from the UK, let alone my city, it'll also hopefully be put online at the website. If so then I'll post a link to the article here, on this site.

Hopefully it'll help with the cause, but since it's for an unbiased newspaper I won't be able to put down anything about the petition. I'll try and work it in somehow just as a reference, though I won't be saying to anybody to actually sign it or posting details in the article. Hopefully though, it'll help rally some support...

There's no way it will stick.

Those online the least (the ones most punished by this) are the least likely to pirate it in the first place. Best as I can tell, this only punishes those that buy the game because dedicated pirates will not be beaten.

Honestly, you'd think they'd learn this by now.

Good plan. I'll have to look at my university's courses and see if they have it and what the prerequisites are.

I know that Abertay University in Scotland is currently the only university in the world to offer such a course. Or at least in the UK, the US may have caught up in the last 3-5 years.

Just don't buy it, or anything else Ubisoft make.

If a company wants me to purchase its products then it would help to treat me with some respect, not treat me like a criminal. I find the entire concept of any DRM, even disc checks, to be insulting. None of it actually works, and all it does is incovenience legitimate users.

i give it a week tops till someone finds a way around this. If they are trying to reduce "piracy" it won't work. All the people who choose to pirate games don't want to buy them (obviously) so if you make it so they can't pirate games using this then they just won't download it and most likely won't buy those games. Their just punishing the people who actually buy games with it because it will just restrict people without internet or people who lose internet for awhile and can't play the game.

Overall i think it's a bad idea. It won't stop anything. Either someone will find a way around it, or no one will buy games using this.

I think this kind of DRM doesn't work. Not for me a least and i will deprive Ubisoft from theor profit. I will not play any game that has severe restrictions on the use. Same reason why i didn't get Mass Effect, it required an online check every few days, same goes for bioshock with 5 installs max (i know, they released a patch to corrct that, but i will not support this kind of thing).
Perhaps they should look into something else, i'm using software, you order it, get the package with tempoary serials, you register with those within 30 days and you will get the permanent serials by (e)mail or fax, and a "thank you for purchasing" notice.

Now, I'm all for stopping pirates and I'm all for companies wanting to make more money. In theory if they have more money they can make better games. But this goes way to far, DRM doesn't work very well. Sure it might stop people from stealing your game but it also stops people from buying it because they don't want to put up with that crap!

Plus, we all know its only a matter of time before some l33t guy manages to crack it. Meaning that it will sell poorly AND be pirated. Bam!

I do have to say though, the game pirates only have themselves to blame for this. Its unfortunetly really, that the honest gamers out there have to suffer.
